We have three new pastors and there is renewed energy in our congregation. Important work is being done as we proclaim the glory of Jesus Christ from both of our campuses and there is a sense, everywhere, that Bethel has a bright future. As we look to this future and plan our ministry, we feel that it s vital that every member of the congregation be a part of that planning. In the coming weeks each of us will have the opportunity to do this by taking the Church Assessment Tool or (as it s come to be called), the CAT survey. Starting January 19 th, the survey will be available through a link on the Bethel website. When you click on the link, it will take you directly to the site to complete the survey. Paper surveys will be available at both welcome centers starting January 26th for those who prefer to respond that way. The survey only works if everybody takes this opportunity to have their voices heard. So please help us Feed the CAT! THANK YOU A special thank-you to the 26 volunteers who assisted in Bethel s December Food Shelf operation. This year was a record year for the food shelf and the work of the volunteers was essential to meet needs. In December, we distributed over seven tons of food, a massive undertaking. It appears that with the reduction in food stamps this year, the need will only continue to grow. Thanks again to each of you who so willingly helped with this service to our community. YAH TO TOUR HENNEPIN MEDICAL HISTORY CENTER On Thursday, February 20th the Young At Hearts will have an opportunity to tour the Hennepin Medical History Center in Minneapolis. The history collection gives a lively look at life and work at a busy public hospital, as well as patient care and medical procedures. With photographs, records and equipment from early hospitals in Minneapolis, we will see the work done in predecessor hospitals such as St. Barnabus (Minneapolis first hospital in 1871), and Minneapolis General Hospital, to name a few. Following the tour we will walk outside one block to Hubert s (by the Metrodome) for lunch. The cost for the tour, lunch and bus is $15. Please sign up at the Downtown welcome center no later than February 9th. Payment is also due by that date. The bus will leave from the Downtown campus at 9 am and we will return at approximately 2 pm. CELEBRATION COUNCIL CANDIDATES FOR 2014 Seven Bethel members have expressed interested in joining the church council in 2014. The congregation will have the opportunity to vote for candidates during the Annual Meeting and Celebration on January 26th. Below are biographies of the seven candidates. MIKE BARTELS Financial Secretary Nominee My wife is Amy Bartels and we have been married for 19 years. Daughter Julia is 11 and in 6th grade and our son Joe is 10 and in 4th grade. We have lived in Hudson since 1995 and have been members of Bethel for 17 years. I enjoy time with family, friends, golf, and being a taxi service for my daughter to dance and son to all his sporting events. I have worked at CHS Inc for 19 years. I currently manage the Hedge Desk in Grain Marketing. CHS, a Fortune 100 company, supplies energy, crop nutrients, grain marketing, services, animal feed, food and food ingredients, along with business solutions including insurance, financial and risk management services. DENNIS DUERST Treasurer Nominee Dennis Duerst is currently Bethel Treasurer after being appointed in 2013. He and his family have been residents of Hudson since 2000 and members of Bethel during this time. Dennis and his wife Lois have two high school aged children Abby and Jacob, a daughter Amanada, in Milwaukee, and son Ben, in Madison. Dennis is employed at 3M where he is the Director of Benefit Fund Investments in the Finance organization. He has over 25 years of investment, finance and Treasury experience. He currently serves on several non-profit boards and committees and is excited to utilize his experience in a positive way to help support the mission and growth of Bethel! TASHA GUNDERSON General Council Nominee I am interested in becoming a viable member of the Bethel Church Council because I enjoy being fully immersed in the spiritual side of my life. I hope to bring another late 40's female voice to the group, but one that is well researched and always fair. My background is Marketing and Advertising so I'm not the quiet kind! I have truly enjoyed the recent changes that have been made without losing the "core" mission and aesthetic of Bethel, but I think we can do more. I am a full blooded, Lefse- Loving Norwegian as is my entire family. Leif and I, along with our two daughters, Tia and Heidi, have been members at Bethel Lutheran for over 15 years. DAVIN MILLER General Council Nominee After 20+ years as a member of Bethel and serving its ministry as a Sunday School teacher, Confirmation Guide and as an eager volunteer in other areas, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to finally serve as a member of the council, beginning last January. This past summer I was offered an opportunity to become the Director of Transportation for a school district in Northern California. At the time, it seemed as though God was pointing me and my family in that direction and so I accepted the position. Unfortunately, doing so required that I resign my position on the council after having served only six months. While in California, I realized how much I was leaving behind in Hudson, including my church family here at Bethel. So after much soul searching I made the decision to return to Hudson in November. Now that I am back, I am thrilled to be back among those of you who have been so much a part of my family s and my life for all these years. I am also equally excited to have this opportunity to return to the council in order to continue the great work that our ministry team and our group of visionary council members have begun over the past 12 months. Bethel has a bright future in the coming years and to have the chance to continue to be part of shaping its direction as a member of the council is something I truly look forward to. JULIE NEIDERHAUSER General Council Nominee My name is Julie Neiderhauser and I have been a part of the Bethel Church community for the past 21 years. I am married to my husband, Elmer, and we have three boys, Jim, Joe and Jake. I have been involved with Bethel in many different capacities, including teaching Sunday school, VBS craft coordinator, worship support, and confirmation guide. I also have been involved in other ongoing church functions. I have enjoyed working with different age groups and I feel that is has prepared me to help make decisions for all demographics of our congregation. I have worked in the Hudson community for the last 12 years at Elan and also worked to promote the Hudson downtown community while serving on various committees. I have seen tremendous growth and progress in my time at Bethel, that is working to better our church and its community. I am excited at the thought of being a part of continued growth through missions, outreach and expansion as we continue to pursue the heart of God. KRISTA OTTINO General Council Nominee Krista Ottino has been a member of Bethel Lutheran Church since the Fall of 2012. She lives in Hudson Township with her husband Rick, three dogs, and two cats. All their children are grown with children of their own. Rick has been active with Bethel on the Worship committee, as a bus driver, and also volunteering with their therapy dog Caesar. Krista wishes to also become actively involved with Bethel and thought the church council would be a good fit for her skills and experience. Krista has a doctorate from the University of Minnesota in Educational Policy and Administration. She has served the St. Paul Public Schools in a variety of teaching and leadership positions over the past 22 years. Krista feels blessed to be a member of the Bethel community and is grateful for the friends she has made through the Bethel Midlers group, bible study classes, and the New Song worship services. TIM WISTE General Council Nominee I welcome the opportunity to serve on Bethel's Church Council. Having been members of Bethel since moving to Hudson in 2002, my wife Marla and I have enjoyed watching and participating in the growth and change in the church and congregation. Our daughters Isabelle (13) and Noelle (9) are growing up with Bethel as their childhood church home, and therein lies my inspiration to become a member of the Council. My participation in volunteering at Bethel until now has been limited to Sunday/Wednesday School teaching - but through that I was encouraged to be a Council member. I look forward to listening, learning and growing as a member of Bethel's Council - and pray that I can help further our Mission: To WELCOME all people into God s church, family and kingdom, EQUIP them as disciples of Jesus Christ, and to SEND them out to serve God and all God s people.
