THERE S A SONG IN THE AIR What Child Is This? O Little Town Of Bethlehem Hark! The Herald Angels Sing O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

JOHN MACARTHUR The lyrics of this beloved hymn express the vast drama of redemption from the ancient covenant promises to the eternal consummation of our heavenly home.

II. THE DOCTRINES OF THIS HYMN But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone (Isaiah 9:1-2)

Nazareth To Capernaum In Zebulon & Naphtali In Matthew 4

A. EMMANUEL Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14). And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14). Hebrews 2:14-18

B. LORD OF MIGHT For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). I am God Almighty (Genesis 17:1). But of the Son he says, Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom (Hebrews 1:8).

C. ROD OF JESSE There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit (Isaiah 11:1) In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious (Isaiah 11:10)

D. DAYSPRING In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:4-5) Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us (Luke 1:78 KJV)

II PETER 1:19 & REVELATION 1:16 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. His face was like the sun shining in full strength

E. KEY OF DAVID In that day I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your sash on him, and will commit your authority to his hand. And he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open (Isaiah 22:20-22)

ONLY ONE KEY TO HEAVEN Will You Spend Christmas At Home? We wait with same urgent expectancy as did the Israelites of old, for the piercing of the clouds, when victory over sin and death will be final (Kenneth W. Osbeck).

MAY OUR HEARTS CRY OUT
