R E F L E C T I O N S That the Creator himself comes to us and becomes our ransom this is the reason for our rejoicing. Martin Luther The New Testament portrays the Christ event, which happened two thousand years ago, as the finished, perfect work of God for the salvation of all his people, both Jew and gentile. The gospel the first coming of Christ wins for believers all the riches of glory. The acceptance of the believer with God is perfect the moment he believes because Christ and his work are perfect. The status of the believer can never be improved upon he possess all the riches of Christ. There is nothing the believer will possess in glory that he does not now possess in Christ. All this he possesses by faith, but that it is by faith does not make it any less real. Graeme Goldsworthy Gospel and Kingdom When He (Jesus) returns is not as important as the fact that we are ready for Him when He does return. A. W. Towzer The time of consummation has not yet come. But it will come. By picturing the final triumph of God and the splendors to follow, (the book of) Revelation stirs up our longing for that final day. The Spirit leads the church in prayer: Come! (22:17). That is, Come, Lord Jesus (v.20). The bride, that is, the church (19:7), takes up the prayer and longing, as she is taught by the Spirit. Vern Poythress The Returning King

P R A I S E SCRIPTURE READING & LIGHTING OF THE THIRD ADVENT CANDLE: Isaiah 12:1-6 The Wright family CALL TO WORSHIP: based on Psalm 126 Pastor: Come and worship. Let your mouths be filled with laughter and your tongues with shouts on joy! All: The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad. Pastor: Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! All: He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him. Pastor: Come singing with shouts of joy, with mouths and hearts full of thanksgiving. Come, let us worship! HYMN OF PRAISE: 214 Angels We Have Heard on High PRAYER OF PRAISE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen. 2

C O N F E S S I O N SCRIPTURE READING: Exodus 34:5-9 5 The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the 6 Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and 7 gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the 8 third and the fourth generation. And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and 9 worshiped. And he said, If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us, for it is a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance. Leader: All: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN: All: Almighty and merciful God, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare those who confess their faults. Restore those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to the world in Christ Jesus, our Lord. And grant, O merciful God, for his sake, that we may live a holy, just, and humble life to the glory of your holy name. Amen. SILENT REFLECTION AND CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE & PEACE OF GOD: based on Ephesians 1:7-10 Pastor: Because of his sovereign and undeserved loved, God sent his Son, Jesus Christ, the Beloved, and you have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of your trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, All: which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ, Pastor: this according to his plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. The peace of Christ be with you all. All: And also with you. HYMN: 201 O Little Town of Bethlehem 3

C O M M I T M E N T OFFERTORY PRAYER OFFERTORY Away in a Manger Covenant Kids Choir Presentation of tithes & offerings DOXOLOGY (Hymnal, page 731) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: Leader: All: Christian, what do you believe? I believe that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. (1 Jn 1:5) Jesus is the image of the invisible God. (Col. 1:15) we must be perfect, as God is perfect. (Matt. 5:48) all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23) if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (1 Jn 2:1) God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16) neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Luke 17:20-37 P R E A C H I N G O F T H E W O R D SCRIPTURE: 20 Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, The kingdom of 21 God is not coming in ways that can be observed, nor will they say, Look, here it is! or There! for behold, 22 the kingdom of God is in the midst of you. And he said to the disciples, The days are coming when you 23 will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. And they will say to you, Look, 24 there! or Look, here! Do not go out or follow them. For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from 25 one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day. But first he must suffer many things and be 26 rejected by this generation. Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered 28 the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot they were 29 eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but on the day when Lot went out from 30 Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all so will it be on the day when the Son 31 of Man is revealed. On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come 32 down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back. Remember Lot's wife. 33 34 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it. I tell you, in that night 35 there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left. There will be two women grinding 37 together. One will be taken and the other left. And they said to him, Where, Lord? He said to them, Where the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. SERMON: Rapture Reconsidered Rev. He comes with clouds descending, once for our salvation, slain; Thousand thousand saints attending, swell the triumph of His train: Hallelujah! Hallelujah! God appears on earth to reign. 2. Every eye shall now behold Him robed in dreadful majesty; Those who set at naught and sold Him, pierced and nailed Him to the tree. Deeply wailing, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see. 3. Lo! He comes in glory shining, saints arise and meet your king. Glorious captain of salvation, Welcome, welcome hear them sing. Shouts of triumph, shouts of triumph, make the heavens with echoes ring. 4. Now redemption, long expected, see in solemn pomp appear; All His saints, by man rejected, now shall meet Him in the air: Hallelujah! Hallelujah! See the day of God appear! 5. Yea, amen!
