St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 13th, 2011 Lord, be my rock of safety, the stronghold that saves me. For the honor of your name, lead me and guide me. Psalm 30:3-4 Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: True wisdom is a gift and blessing from God - A wise person is often thought of as someone having great knowledge. As Catholics, we are to see wisdom in a broader sense seeing wisdom as having its origin in God, and of being given to us as a gift by the Holy Spirit. Wisdom helps us grow in the understanding of our faith, and helps us to choose what is right. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading, from Sirach, reminds us that if we keep God s commandments and trust in Him, we shall live. The second reading teaches that true wisdom is not found in the world, but rather in God. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches us to be vigilant regarding those desires of the heart that could lead us into grave sin. FACT OF LIFE The Cross Is God's 'Yes' to Mankind Suffering is always charged with mystery, difficult to accept and bear. Because of the events that had occurred in Jerusalem in those days the two disciples of Emmaus walk along sadly, and only when the Risen One walks along the road with them do they open up to a new vision (cf. Luke 24:13-31). Even the apostle Thomas manifests the difficulty of believing in the redemptive way of suffering: "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe" (John 20:25). But before Christ who shows his wounds, his response is transformed into a moving profession of faith: "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28). What was at first an insurmountable obstacle, because it was the sign of Jesus apparent failure, becomes, in the encounter with the Risen One, the proof of victorious love: "Only a God who loves us to the extent of taking upon himself our wounds and our pain, especially innocent suffering, is worthy of faith" (Urbi et Orbi Message, Easter 2007). Pope Benedict XVI's Message for 2011 World Day of the Sick Prayer for Life: Father, you are the God of hope. Your word fills us with the vision of the world to come, when every tear will be wiped away, and death will be no more. Amen. MASS INTENTIONS Sun., 02/13 7:30 AM. STEPHANIE RODRIGUEZ i 9:00 AM. Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Ministries in Action February 13th, 2011 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Stewardship involves more than just the gift we bring to the altar. Today s readings say clearly that it is fidelity to God s law that makes our offering acceptable. Road to priesthood involves a rigorous formation process - Seminary formation involves much more than academic study. Prior to ordination, a candidate for priesthood goes through a lengthy evaluation period, including an internship during which he lives in a rectory and works with priests, staff and parishioners. During this time, the candidate is judged as to his suitability to be a priest. No one is ordained unless the staff of St. John s Seminary, including the lay faculty and formation advisers, concludes that the candidate has attained an emotional, psychological and sexual maturity appropriate for his age and for the celibate life of a priest. For more information, please visit www.la-archdiocese.org and click on the Vocations tab. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at 213-637-7650. Featuring the Ministry of the Month: Ì Marriage Ministry Ì How appropriate to have the Marriage Ministry as our featured ministry for February, the month of Love, joy, commitment and peace. Marriage can be all of these, and we recognize that it can be work to keep on keeping on! Marriages matter to us at St. Anastasia. How can we help to support and/or strengthen your Marriage? St. Anastasia has two active Marriage Groups right now. The groups meet separately once a month. They gather for a meal, prayer and fellowship. It is a great opportunity to share and know that you re not the only couple who might be struggling with particular issues. If you would like to join a couple s night out gathering, please contact Suzette and Jon and 310-670-2243 x51. A great reflective website to look at: www.foryourmarriage.org. Women s Faith Sharing - Women s Faith Sharing will provide an opportunity to learn through Scripture and from each other how to be the Christian Women God created us to be. The purpose of Women s Faith Sharing Ministry is to: Strengthen each woman s Baptismal call to Holiness. To provide opportunity for women to have a time of fellowship with God and each other. To provide an opportunity to make new friends, and strengthen relationships with old friends, as we build each other up in the Body of Christ. To provide a place to develop a sense of self-worth and spirituality. This month it is on Thursday, February 17th, 10:15-11:30 AM, Rectory Conference Room (downstairs). Questions? Call Suzette Sornborger @ 310.670.2243 x 51.

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary time Caring for Creation, Caring for the Poor February 13th, 2011 From the Music Director For the next several Sundays, the Responsorial Psalm, and the Readings for that matter, are ones we rarely come upon in the Lectionary Cycle. In many years we are entering the season of Lent by now, so these Sunday Readings and Psalms are covered by the Sundays of Lent. Starting with last Sunday's Psalm 112 "The Just Man is a Light" and through to March 6, we only find one familiar Psalm, next week's Psalm 103, "The Lord is Kind and Merciful." The rest are less familiar as lectionary psalms but include the beautiful Psalm 62, which we know as "Only in God" in two weeks. Greg Koppenhaver PRAYER RESOURCES - CREATION CARE PRAYER RESOURCES: On the National Catholic Reporter s EcoCatholic page, Carol Meyer observes that We Catholics should be incorporating prayers for the Earth into more of our church life. In order to help Catholics more fully do so, Ms. Meyer offers a number of different prayers which can be included or adapted into your prayer life, or that of your parish through the Mass. See what Ms. Meyer has suggested here: http://ncronline.org/blogs/eco-catholic/ wheres-earth-prayer-when-you-need-one. Getting to know...st. A's Music Teacher and Choir Director Greg Koppenhaver How long have you been at St. A's: I have been playing Masses at St. A's for 26 years and teaching music for 14 years. Have you always been a teacher?: I have been a teacher and a professional musician since college. I have taught preschool through college students. Hobbies: Tennis, Hiking, Skiing Greatest Accomplishment: My sons, Christian and Scott Favorite Holiday: Easter Favorite song: Somewhere from West Side Story Favorite Play: West Side Story Tell us a little about the upcoming Spring Musical: It has been a lot of fun working on "Guys and Dolls." We're at that point in the rehearsal process where the actors and singers know their lines and songs really well, so we are perfecting the dances and refining our acting. It should be a great show because of the classic material we have to work with. I'm sure you will think several of our students are simply outstanding in their roles. I hope to see many of our parishioners on our show dates, February 26th and 27th. Confirmation TONIGHT!!
