As We Gather: The Lenten season is a time for renewal in faith and in living repentant, productive lives. Our mid-week services allow a little extra time for the Lord to work this renewal in us. This year s Lenten Series is entitled The Hands of Lent. We are focusing on portions of the passion (suffering) story of our Lord with an emphasis on what people are doing with their hands. This week we focus on old Hands. Order of Worship: Special (Stand) ALL TO WORSHI Jesus, may our love be burning with more fervent love for You. May our eyes be ever turning to behold Your cross anew. For Your sinless death has brought us Life eternal, peace and rest. Only what Your grace has taught us alms the sinner s deep distress. 1
ONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Holy and Gracious God, I confess that I have sinned against You this day. Some of my sin I know the thoughts and words and deeds of which I am ashamed. But some of my sin is known only to You. In the name of Jesus hrist, I ask Your forgiveness. Deliver and restore me that I may rest in peace. I now ask you before God, is this your sincere confession, that you heartily repent of your sins, believe in Jesus hrist, and sincerely and earnestly intend, by the assistance of God the Holy Spirit, to amend your sinful life. Then declare so by saying: Yes. Yes. Then be assured that you have been redeemed by hrist the crucified. Your sins are all forgiven. Go forth in peace and in joy and sin no more. Amen. SALM salm 71:17 21, 24 17 Since my youth, O God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. A 18 Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come. 19 Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God, you who have done great things. Who, O God, is like you? 20 Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. 21 You will increase my honor and comfort me once again. 24 My tongue will tell of your righteous acts all day long, for those who wanted to harm me have been put to shame and confusion. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen. (Sit) 3
FIRST READING Jonah 1:1-3 L A reading from Jonah. 1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me. 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. L This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Stand) HOLY GOSEL Luke 22:54-62 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-second chapter. Glory be to You, O Lord. 54 Then they seized [Jesus] and led him away, bringing him into the high priest s house, and eter was following at a distance. 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, eter sat down among them. 56 Then a servant girl, 4
seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, This man also was with him. 57 But he denied it, saying, Woman, I do not know him. 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, You also are one of them. But eter said, Man, I am not. 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, ertainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean. 60 But eter said, Man, I do not know what you are talking about. And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at eter. And eter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times. 62 And he went out and wept bitterly. This is the Gospel of the Lord. raise be to Thee, O hrist. (Sit) SERMON (Rev. Mark Boxman) Luke 22:54-62 old Hands, old Feet: Renewal of Witness WE RAISE GOD WITH OUR OFFERING (Stand) THE RAYERS 5
