June 2016 Visit us online: Pastor Appreciation Sunday June 5, 2016, will be a special day in the life of Cross Point Church. Each June we set aside a day to honor our pastors and their families. We appreciate Pastors Vondie, Rob, Nathan, Justin, and Rhonda and their families for their service to the Lord. You will not want to miss church on June 5! A time of celebration and appreciation is being planned. Following the 10:45 AM service we will celebrate with a fellowship meal in the gym. Everyone is invited to attend this time of celebration! You can help provide food for the dinner. In order to have enough food for the dinner we have already planned a menu. There is a sign up sheet at the Information Center in the lobby with the menu. If you would like to help provide food for the dinner, simply sign up by one or more of the items on the list. Gifts are not expected, however, there will be a box at the Information Center on June 5 if you would like to give our pastors cards and letters with words of appreciation and encouragement. Your words of appreciation and encouragement mean a lot to our pastors. Here are some ideas you may want to consider for your cards and letters: Share about a time when a Pastor helped you or provided hope and encouragement. Do you have a special memory about one of the Pastors? Share your favorite memory about the Pastor. Share encouraging scriptures. List the reasons the Pastor is special to you. What do you appreciate about the Pastor? Write out a prayer you pray for the Pastor. Women s Gathering Ladies, do you wish you could get to know some of the other ladies from Cross Point? If so, here is your change! Join us for our next Women s Gathering. The gatherings take place the second Sunday of each month at 5:00 PM. At the gathering we learn from God s Word, connect with each other, and have a good time. Be sure to join us in June! Men s Gathering Guys, this is your change to connect and get to know other guys from Cross Point. Each month the guys gather together on the fourth Sunday to dig into God s Word, get to know each other better, pray for each other, and grow together. The Men s Gathering for June will take place on Sunday, June 26. We are planning a special outing for June. Watch your worship folder and listen for announcements for more information about this outing. Elder Board Nominations This year we have two Elders who will fulfill serving their term on the Elder Board. We graciously thank Rick Cox and Russell Shaw for their time and efforts serving on the Elder Board. At the Information Center in the lobby you will find Elder Board Nomination Forms. These forms are designed for the congregation to have direct input into the nominating of persons for the Elder Board. The forms include the biblical qualifications for an elder and a place for you to give your reasons for nominating the person you sense God would have you bring to the attention of the Elder Board. Please pick up your Nomination Form, complete it, and return to the information center. We have two vacancies to fill on the Elder Board this year, and God is preparing those whom He desires to serve Him in this capacity. Youth Sunday June 12 The Cross Point Youth Ministry will be leading us in worship on Sunday June 12. Wesley Seabright, Youth Summer Intern, will share from God s Word. This special Sunday will also feature baptisms during both worship services. We will also honor our graduates on this Sunday. You will not want to miss service on June 12! Raising the Bar Campaign Continues The Raising the Bar Capital Campaign continues. In May our church family contributed $6,831.94 to the Raising the Bar Capital Campaign! Thank you for your faithfulness and obedience to God for helping to do your part to take care of our church facility an amazing tool God has allowed us to have to reach the lost, train disciples, and impact our community. Don t forget, when donating gifts to the Capital Campaign be sure to write Building Fund on the memo line of your check or check the appropriate box on a tithing envelope. The Capital Campaign helps raise funds to pay the monthly mortgage on our facility. The monthly mortgage is approximately $8,000. It truly takes every family at Cross Point being obedient to work together to accomplish this task. It s not too late to get involved! Every gift, no matter the size, helps reach our goal. On this day there will be a Day of Hope event with free groceries, kids zone, health fair, workforce development, and more. Convoy of Hope is a faith-based nonprofit, founded in 1994, that has served more than 55 million people throughout the world through international children s feeding initiatives, community outreaches, disaster response, and partner resourcing. Gabriel s Blanket Ministry is Expanding Submitted by Donna Feijo, Gabriel s Blanket Ministry Coordinator What is Gabriel s Blanket? Let me tell you how it all began Gabriel, my grandson was born premature with a condition called Hydrops. The moments that we got to spend with him are cherished. During the last hour of his life, the doctors had determined that the struggle was too great and we knew that unless God changed his condition, our time with him was short. Gabriel s Mom, Dad, and Grandparents were at his side in the neonatal intensive care unit. Mom was holding her baby. She and Dad were trying to cope with what was about to happen. Words cannot describe their pain. Then the nurse walked up and wrapped a little blue and white crochet blanket around Gabriel. Everything around us seemed to be cold and mechanical, as he had been hooked to a variety of medical equipment. But the blanket provided a sense of warmth and comfort for all of us as Gabriel drifted to heaven. Later the nurse brought a white box to Mom and Dad. In the box was a scripture, the blanket, a card with his footprints, a lock of his hair, a poem, and his arm and foot bracelets. This was such a blessing for the entire family. When we left the hospital that day, I started to pray about this experience and how to develop a blanket Ministry. I thought about the person that stitched Gabriel s blanket and wondered what their prayer must have been, as they knew the purpose of the blanket. What a selfless, kind act. While knitting the first blanket prayerfully, my thoughts were of the special child and family that it might reach. I thought about God creating and loving each of us individually. I blanketed this child and family in prayer. My hope and prayer that Gabriel s Blanket will bring the comfort of God s love to someone else, just when they need it the most was presented to the Board of Elders at Cross Point. And that is the way Gabriel s Blanket Ministry began back in 2011. A group of ladies have been providing their prayers and the knitted, crocheted, and quilted blankets since. We deliver these bereavement items every few months. Psalm 139:13-16 is included on every bereavement box to remind us that babies have a very special place in the heart of God. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Recently I began praying about how we could provide more help. The nursery staff was asked what they thought was the most needed item for their newborn babies. A unanimous answer came back from the staff newborn sleepers. Last month we picked up some sleepers, onesies, and bibs, washed, and packaged these for Raleigh General. They were very appreciative and sent the church a nice Thank You note. Pastor Vondie s message, Dream Team really spoke to me! God has given me a dream with Gabriel s Blanket. I don t want to limit the results. God does great things to build His kingdom when we follow His lead and step out in faith! The need is larger than just a few people can fill. This is an ongoing outreach project, which can give everyone and opportunity to be involved. Sleepers and onesies are needed in preemie to newborn size. These do not have to be new, just in good condition and without stains. Many of you love a good yard sale. (I know I do! J) If we all work together this is a wonderful, inexpensive way to show our community that we care about them. A drop off box will be placed in the lobby (thank you Annette!) for anyone that would like to donate. This is just another way for Cross Point to share God s love in our community. June 2016 6

Photo at left: These are some of the items that were donated to Raleigh General last month. All items are washed in Dreft and packaged with Cross Point s contact information. Voice of the Martyrs Update Extreme Time Devotion Thirty-two million seconds in every year, and each second is a precious gift from God to use for his purposes. If we waste them, the seconds return to God, but they will not return to us. They are like gone forever. Jesus, even while being crucified, spent his final breaths offering salvation to the robber and speaking words of comfort to his mother. He even ministered to his murderers by offering them forgiveness. Are you filling your precious moments with purpose? Ask God to show you how to redeem your time, not waste it. So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 Imagine how precious that time was to the thief who joined Jesus in heaven that day. June 2016 7

Students Sharing It has been such a blessing this past month to see a few of our students step up and share during our Wednesday night youth service. Keith Carter is a senior at Shady High school and will be attending WV tech in the fall. Keith share on the account of Jonah. Russ Sutton (in the blue suit) is finishing up his junior year at shady High. Russ shared on 1 Thessalonians 5 during his message. These two young men have been very active in leadership this past year at Cross Point. They have been a part of our Sunday adventure alley team, they have come to first service to worship and then serve during second service on Sunday mornings. They also finished inductive bible study to help prepare them to fulfill the great commission of Go make disciples. Just want to take a moment and highlight they two you men and what God is doing through them and apart of Cross Point youth ministry. Sincerely, A very proud and humbled youth pastor, Pastor Rob Keith Carter Russ Sutton IYC 2016 International Youth Convention (IYC) is coming June 29 through July 5th for our cross Point students. Please join us in praying for life changing moments through out the entire trip. Please pray for safety as we will be driving to Columbus Ohio to catch our flights to San Antonio Texas. Please prayer that God s Spirit would be working in every aspect of the convention, from the messages, to the worship, to the classes, to group debriefing time and every point in between. Please also pray that we can finishing our fundraising goals. Sincerely Cross Point Youth Team June 2016 8

Youth Summer Camp Summer Camp is just around the corner! Summer camp is for students in grades 6-12. Summer camp will take place July 10th - 15th at our state campground, Rippling Waters, which is about fifteen minutes North of Charleston, WV. The cost is $150 and money is due by June 15. For more information contact Pastor Rob. Peru Missions Trip June 2017 We will have an interest meeting on Sunday June 26, 8:30 am in the kitchen at Cross Point. We will go over tentative schedule, costs and fundraising. If you would like to be a part all are welcome. Sincerely, Pastor Rob BREAKTHROUGH June 5 Breakthrough 4:00-9:30 PM (Notice change in time) For Students in grades 4th-8th Music with a Mission From May 25 to July 6, (excluding June 29) Cross Point Youth s intern Wesley Seabright will be leading a series titled Music With a Mission. From Church of God hymns like Barney E. Warren s Will You Come? to more broadly used hymns such as Horatio G. Spafford s It Is Well with My Soul we will dive into how these songs, while written long ago, still hold valuable truth for the current generations. We will explore six different hymns during six of our Wednesday night services. Teens, be sure to join us as we discuss the meanings of their lyrics as well as some of the stories behind them. In addition to the teaching on these hymns, we will also include them as part of a time of worship. Small groups will be used to strengthen application and answer questions that students may have. Through revisiting hymns, we hope to encourage the youth to dig deeper into their relationship with God, looking at areas where they may have room for improvement. Literature and music, whether old or new, can stretch us to think about things from a different perspective, to view life in light of additional wisdom, and to discover ways we can walk with Christ that we have not in the past. They provide an opportunity to express faith, truth, and life in a creative and unique way. Creativity and critical thinking is essential parts of stretching ourselves and developing our faith. We look forward to how God will work in and through our youth and youth team during the summer months. June 2016 9

ADVENTURE ALLEY KIDS FAITH Faith is believing what Jesus did can change me. WEEK 1: Mapped Out 4 Gospels BOTTOM LINE: The story of Jesus changes everything. WEEK 2: Rerouted Acts 7:34-60, Acts 9:1-25 BOTTOM LINE: The story of Jesus changes how I see Him. WEEK 3: Navigator Acts 9:26-31 BOTTOM LINE: The story of Jesus changes how I see others. WEEK 4: Detour Acts 11:25-30; 13:1-3 BOTTOM LINE: The story of Jesus changes how I help others. MORNING TIME: Post this month s memory verse someplace where everyone can see it. Read it together several times. Now turn away so you can't see the verse anymore and try to repeat the verse together. DRIVE TIME: Watch this month s music video Walk By Faith on either the Parent Cue app or Studo252.tv/ fun2watch. Can you memorize the chorus? MEAL TIME Ask a kid: How can you point others to Jesus with the way you live your life? Ask a parent: Whom do you know that lives their life in such a way that it makes people want to know more about Jesus? BED TIME: Read Acts 9:1-25 Ask God to help you learn to see Jesus for who He really is. JUNE MEMORY VERSE: Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being sure of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1 (NIrV) June 2016 10

PARENT TIME Our kids have incredibly beautiful imaginations. They see shapes in the stars of the night sky. They make up stories aabout unicorns and fairies. They pretend to be the MVP of their favorite pro team. With their imaginations, kids dream big and imagine impossible dreams. But at some point every kid realizes stars are simply balls of gas, unicorns aren t real, and their odds of going pro are slim. Sometimes reality can be disappointing. But sometimes reality changes us for the better. The real story of Jesus how he really walked on earth, how he really died for our sins, and how he really rose again gives kids something to believe in that will see them through the ups and downs of life. When kids allow the story of Jesus to become part of who they are, it can impact every decision they make. More resources: ParentCue.org: A community of parents striving to make the most of the time we have with your kids, including a monthly podcast. Parent Cue App: Centered on a monthly topic, this app sends weekly cues that remind us to connect with our kids whether at home or on the go. Studio252.tv: A family web site that helps us make the most of everyday moments at home to build a spiritual legacy in our family. June 2016 11

A Look Back at April in Adventure Alley Russ Sutton helped this month in Adventure Alley by playing the role of an inventor who was not content. Each week, he opened our kids service with a crazy new invention.all in an attempt to have bigger stuff, stuff he used to have, more stuff, or he was worried about stuff! All in an effort to be more content. Over the last 5 weeks, Adventure Alley kids learned some things about contentment. They learned that contentment is deciding to be happy with what you ve got. In other words, you can choose to be happy because of what God has actually given you. You can choose to shift your focus away from what you don t have and toward what God desires to do with the life you have. When you trust Him with your life, you become more focused on being grateful for everything He s already given to you. Photo above: Andrew Franco played the part of the young inventor who discovered that even "going back to the past" didn't bring him contentment. Photo below: Russ Sutton playing the part of a "uncontent inventor" who was always looking for a way to make more stuff or bigger stuff! The Bible has a lot to say about contentment. When you teach kids to see their life as a gift from God it sets them up for a life of contentment and ful illment. There will be no reason to be distracted by what others have, or what s off limits, or what we had in the past. And when all of us really trust God, we will be content with exactly what He has put in our box for today and won t worry about the future. June 2016 13

Rent A Youth Is there a job on your to do list that you just don t have time or you don t want to do? Why not rent one of our youth to help with your chores? Money raised from Rent A Youth helps our youth attend various youth activities. If you are interested in renting one or more of our youth, see Pastor Rob. Prayer Chain Prayer is a powerful tool we have as Christians. As a church family we can help lift each other up in prayer. One way we do this at Cross Point is through our Prayer Chain. The prayer chain is a group of people who have opted in to receive prayer requests. When a prayer request is received, it is sent to this group using our church notification system. Each member then receives the request so they can begin praying for the need. Individuals who would like to be added to the prayer chain should contact Justin Davis in the church office at (304) 252-6684. To submit a prayer request, follow this procedure: Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Call the church office at: (304) 252-6684. All other times, call Justin Davis at (304) 575-2363. If no answer, leave a message and Justin will put it on the prayer chain as soon as possible. Don t Throw Away Those Cans! The youth ministry has been collecting aluminum cans to be recycled to raise money to support youth activities. You can drop off your aluminum cans at the church during office hours (Monday Thursday 8AM- 4PM). There is a collection can near the gym. Help support our youth and save our environment!
