V 1 Psalm summary. V 2 Confession of faith. V 3 Delight in fellow believers 1 Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust. 2 O my soul, you have said to the Lord, You are my Lord, My goodness is nothing apart from You. 3 As for the saints who are on the earth, They are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. 5

Judging others? Separating from false religionists? 4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god; Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer, (Hebrew scholar Keil: sinful. blood stained hands, as Let His blood be upon our hands ) Nor take up their names on my lips. Eph. 5:11-12 6

A promise to God to refrain from participating in the sins of unbelievers, or even mention their gods An Old Testament commitment to be separated is repeated as a commandment in the New Testament. Ephesians 5:11-12 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 7

What are the first and second most important things in the David s mind? 5 O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot. 8

For what is he thanking God? Has God ever talked to your heart in your sleep? 6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Yes, I have a good inheritance. 7 I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons. 9

What benefits has David experienced as a result of trusting God and putting Him first? 8 I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope. 10

The Holy Spirit through Peter says in Acts 2:25 31 that verse 10 refers to Christ s bodily resurrection. 10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol (Sheol can refer to (grave=body) and Luke 16 (paradise for the soul & spirit of believers) (hades for the soul & spirit of unbelievers) The context determines the meaning of Sheol Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption (of the body, i.e. resurrection in three days=jesus) 11

Acts 2 22 Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus being delivered by the determined purpose of God, you have crucified, and put to death; 24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning Him: I foresaw the Lord always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. 12

Acts 2 26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. 27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence. 13

11 You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 16 14

David wrote Psalm 16 but it goes way beyond him to Christ. And it also speaks to us. 1. I m trusting my tomorrows to You, O Lord. 2. Any goodness in me is from You, Lord 3. Believing friends strengthen and rejoice me. 4. I withdraw from wicked friends and do not even mention the names of their gods 5. You are everything to me, O God. You have given me a good life. 6. I appreciate Your counsel, day and night 15

7. As long as I surrender to You, I am strong and no one can move me 8. I am deeply happy and I know that my death will just be a short flight into Your presence. 9. You will not leave me alone in some mystical state of death. 10. You have made me your child, so even my body will one day be made alive again 16

11. You will bring me into the full joy of Your presence. 12. Your powerful right hand will create pleasures that cannot even be imagined on this sinful earth 17

The angels will carry our spirit/soul to paradise (Luke 16:22) and we will meet our Savior (John 14:3) 18

Sinful man has eroded and polluted the first creation for thousands of years and it is still beautiful. Imagine the new Creation! 19

So what can we take home from Psalm 16? 1. We do not need to be afraid of dying 2. We do not need to be worried about being bored in heaven 3. Realize that the religions of this world demand giving and doing in order to reach God 4. And the opposite is true. It is God who has given all and done all in order to reach us. 5. The believer s inheritance is God. The inheritance is good now and it gets everlastingly better 20
