The Epistle to the ROMANS The Virtuous Christian Life Romans 5:3 5; 2 Peter 1:3 8

Rom. 5:2, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope [confidence] of the glory of God. Rom. 5:3, And not only that, but we also rejoice [glory, NJV] in adversities, [because we] knowing that adversity produces endurance; Rom. 5:4, and endurance, character; and character, confidence [hope]. Rom. 5:5, Now hope [confidence in God] does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

The Doctrine of the Believer s Hope Part 1: The Believer s Hope in Paul s Epistle to the Romans, A summary

The Doctrine of the Believer s Hope Part 2: Paul s Emphasis on Hope A summary

The Doctrine of the Believer s Hope Part 3: Other s Emphasis on Hope A summary

1 Pet. 1:3, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 1 Pet. 1:21, who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. 1 Pet. 3:15, But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

Romans 5:3 4 confidence [hope] (elpis) tested, approved character (dokime) endurance (hupomone) adversity (thlipsis)

James 1:2, My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, James 1:3, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance [hupomone]. James 1:4, But let endurance [hupomone] have its maturing work, that you may be perfect [mature] and complete, lacking nothing.

Romans 5:3 4 confidence [hope] (elpis) adversity (thlipsis) endurance (hupomone) testing (dokimion) tested, approved character (dokime) endurance (hupomone) James 1:2 4 perfect work maturation (teleios) trial (peirasmos)

Virtue (Latin: virtus, Greek: ἀρετή arete ) is moral excellence. The opposite of virtue is vice. Virtue in the Greek world is not the same as virtue in Biblical thought. In biblical thought, virtue is related to the action of God s righteousness and justice toward His creation.

1 Pet. 2:9, But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises [virtues] of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

2 Pet. 1:3, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 2 Pet. 1:4, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

2 Pet. 1:5, But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 2 Pet. 1:6, to knowledge self-control, to selfcontrol perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 2 Pet. 1:7, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 2 Pet. 1:8, For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
