Archdiocese of Detroit St. John s Deaf Center Our Lady of Loretto West Detroit Catholic Deaf Catholic Deaf Newsletter Volume 37 Issue 7 www.sjdc-oll.org July 2018 Hello Friends, I hope you are enjoying this summer! We will have a special visitor from Kenya, Africa, from July 12 to 18. Father Jose Martinez Rea, a native of Mexico and a missionary working with the Deaf in Kenya wants to learn more about the Deaf Ministry in the United States. He will celebrate, or at least concelebrate, Mass on July 15 at OLL and Holy Innocents. I know he will be thrilled to meet you. I re-read what I wrote in July newsletter last year. It listed my goals for this past year: 1. Draw more young people to our churches, especially families with young children 2. Help other people in the Archdiocese learn more about our Deaf Ministry 3. Have our local Catholic Deaf community members become more involved with the national level Catholic Deaf groups and events such as International Catholic Deaf Association and Ministry Formation Program 4. Train members to visit people who are sick and home bound Support the new group: Deaf Ladies of Our Mother of Perpetual Help I am pleased that we have met most of our goals above. Many thanks to Annmarie who worked hard this past year training our members for various ministerial roles and leading monthly Liturgy of the Word for Children. We had some people from Michigan go to ICDA s national conference in St. Louis last July and the Midwest conference last April in Milwaukee. We launched livestream Mass every Sunday which was brought to the attention of the Archdicoese. The Archdiocese, in addition, has made a video on the various ministries serving people with disabilities and that video included Deaf Ministry. Although Deaf Ladies of Our Mother of Perpetual Help is still in its initial stage, it continues to exist. Also many thanks to Jakki for her dedicated work with our community. She will retire on July 1, but she has no intention to disappear from us. In fact, she has new goals on what she could do with us after her retirement! There will be a party for Jakki after Mass at Holy Innocents on July 8. Everyone is welcome. God is so good! He has richly blessed our Deaf Catholic community in Detroit! Thanks be to God! Yours in Christ, Fr. MD Fr. Michael A. Depcik, OSFS www.fmd.org Fr. Michael Depcik

Please minister to them. I pray that You would work in their hearts, dry their tears, take away their fears, and be their Healer, Comforter and Provider. You know who is struggling and You know each one by name. Please have compassion and mercy, and may they feel Your presence like never before. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen. CRS Rice Bowl St. John s Deaf Center and Our Lady of Loretto-West Detroit Catholic Deaf donated $1,267.55 for Catholic Relief Services. Your participation in CRS Rice Bowl will continue to make a difference in the lives of poor people of other countries in need throughout the entire year. Thank you for your generous donation and support. God bless you, ALL!! Annmarie Kowalczyk, Patricia Dudis, and Diane Knight We strive to support a ministry where all Deaf individuals are invited to meet Jesus Christ and participate in the life of the Catholic Church using American Sign Language. We welcome everyone, including our hearing brothers and sisters, who want to experience the richness of our Deaf culture as well as deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer, service, and the Sacraments. E News If you would like to receive the newsletter, please give us your email address. Contact: Gail Buchalaski at mgbuchalski7@sbcglobal.net Or Jakki Felix at jakkifelix04@gmail.com If you are interested in becoming a Catholic and/or have been baptized but have never made First Holy Communion or received Confirmation, we have a process called Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RICA). Please Contact Fr. MD at (VP) 586-439-0146 or depcik@desales.org

St. Ignatius of Loyola (July 31st) Talks to Us If God sends you many sufferings, it is a sign that he has great plans for you and certainly wants to make you a saint. Fiat! Reflection Peace be with you! I am excited for July 2018 because it is the first time Catholic Christians can celebrate Blessed Father Solanus Casey on his feast day! Blessed Solanus died July 31, 1957. Typically, the Church honors the Blessed or Saint on the day he dies. Sometimes, the feast day is moved for other reasons. The Church chose July 30 th as Blessed Solanus feast day! July 30, 2018 is the first feast day we can celebrate Blessed Solanus Casey! Why do we celebrate feast days? The Church recognizes some people as examples of holiness. Their prayer, their relationships, their work, their love, their joy, their faith, their perseverance are examples for all people to follow. We can look to the Saints and say, I can learn from this Saint. I can copy his actions. I can become holy, too! Every year on the Saint s feast days it is like looking at an old family photograph. We remember the person and the story, and we are inspired to become more holy ourselves! One way Blessed Solanus became holy was his love and relationship with Mary, the Mother of God. Blessed Solanus asked Mary to pray for him and to help him. He asked Mary to guide him to Jesus. He asked Mary to protect him. Blessed Solanus loved Mary, prayed to Mary, prayed the Rosary, and Blessed Solanus tried to copy Mary s holiness. On July 16 th, the Church celebrates Our Lady of Mount Carmel, one feast day of Mother Mary. On July 30 th, the Church celebrates Blessed Solanus Casey. We, also, can become closer to Mary and to Blessed Solanus during the month of July. Ask both of them to pray for you. Ask both of them for special favors or emergency requests. They both want to help you in your journey through life! Blessed Mother Mary, pray for us! Blessed Father Solanus, pray for us! July Events July 10 Learning Together Presentation Sandy Graham, 10:45 am at SJDC Health Care Advance Directive Have you thought about who will make health care decisions for you if you are too ill or incapacitated? It may be good idea to think about it and share with your family. Health Care Advance Directive allows you to choose someone to make health Care decisions for you if you can t. It s best to choose a person while you are healthy so you can be sure that person is someone you trust to follow your wish. If you are legally married, your spouse is already designated by law to make decision for you when you can t (unless you choose someone else through using the medical power of attorney form). You can get a form from medical provider (your doctor or hospital) or download from the internet. To properly use the form you must do 3 things: Think carefully about the person you choose to make decisions for you. Think about what treatment you prefer and share with that person. Talk with that person about your wish. Fill out a form A Power of Attorney for my Health Care and follow instructions for signing it in presence of 2 witnesses. You can go to notary public. After you fill out your form, give a copy to the person you choose and your doctors. If you want to cancel or change your plan, you can always fill out new form and destroy old copies. It s important to tell anyone else who has a copy that you have a new copy. If you have questions or need more information, feel free to contact me at 585-200-1172 VP. I am available only in Tuesday s at St John Deaf Center from 11-4 pm. Annmarie Kowalczyk Kathleen Mitchell
