THE SKYLINE An e-news blast of Desert Skies United Methodist Church March 14, 2017 NEW WORSHIP SERIES- Living the Five Lent is a season of the Christian Year where Christians focus on simple living, prayer, and fasting in order to grow closer to God, a great time to repent, to return to God and re-focus our lives to be more in line with Jesus. It s a 40 day trial run in changing your lifestyle and letting God change your heart. Too often we look for love in all the wrong places! So this Lent, we will Live the Five together as we seek to live the life of love to which we are called. In worship, and in our small groups, we will live more fully into our mission to Love, Learn, Live and Lead as we discover that You Can t Do Life Alone, Growing People Change, Saved People Serve People, Found People Find People, and Worship Is a Lifestyle. Don t look for Love in all the wrong places discover it right here, this Lent, at Desert Skies. March 19- Saved People Serve People (Live) March 26- Found People Find People (Lead) April 02- Worshp is a Lifestyle (Lead) Lenten Study and Small Group, Living the Five The study is reminiscent of John Wesley s class meetings. In Living the Five, authors Jim and Jennifer Cowart show you how successful community groups are called to live out five principles and share how they applied these principles when creating community groups in their own church. Each community group is oriented to live out five principles that put our faith in action and deepen our Christian love to God and each other. The five principles are: 1. You can t do life alone, 2. Growing people change, 3. Saved people serve people, 4. Found people find people and 5. Worship is a lifestyle. Classes run through April 2nd, Living The Five, will be offered in 4 different locations and times: 1. Mondays at 1:00 pm-home of Cindy Hansen (Snyder & Kolb) 3. Wednesdays at 6:30 pm-vail Innovation Center (Vail, AZ.) (6:00 pm-potluck) 2. Wednesdays at 5:30 pm-desert Skies Fellowship Hall 4. Fridays at 6:30 pm Home of Jake & Stephanie Beverage (Catalina Highway & Houghton) It is not too late to sign-up for one of these Lenten Study classes. If you are interested, contact Rev. Matt Colby at the church office # 749-0521. UMW Day of Prayer and Self Denial-Please join us for our Day of Prayer and Self Denial. We will meet on Thursday, March 16, at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall for a light brunch of green eggs and ham. We will be using a self denial calendar as a focus for contributions based on our personal blessings. Calendars are available on the literature table at the back of the sanctuary. Our offering will support the global work of UMW, providing health care for mothers and children. All ladies of Desert Skies and their friends are welcome to join us for this special event.

OUR LENTEN OFFERING WILL HELP TO STOP HUNGER More than 795 million people around the world go to bed hungry every night because their bowls are empty. Millions of them are children, and thousands die each day from hunger-related causes. Rise Against Hunger is an oppor tunity to fill the empty bowls of these childr en in another part of the world. On Sunday, April 23rd, we will package 20,000 life-giving meals for hungry children in one of the world s poorest countries. The cost of each meal is 29 cents, and 20,000 meals will cost $5800. Please place the Styrofoam bowl you were given on your dining table or in another visible place where it will be a reminder of world hunger. We are asking you to help with the funding of our Rise Against Hunger event by placing a few coins in your bowl each day during Lent. You will be helping to save the lives of the children who receive the meals we package. For many of these children, their Rise Against Hunger meal may be the only meal they will have that day. With food in their stomachs, there will be smiles on their faces. LET S MAKE IT HAPPEN! Lenten Group Study For the past few weeks we have met in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 pm for our Lenten Group Study Living The Five with Rev. Matt as our facilitator. It has been a wonderful time of fellowship and reflection on learning how to live out the five principals.

Zippy 49 ers Circle Meeting-The next meeting of the Zippy 49ers Circle of United Methodist Women will be Wednesday, March 15, in Fellowship Hall at church. We will gather at 9:15 and have a light breakfast at 9:30. We will continue with the Adam Hamilton series That You Might Have Life, viewing the next DVD on the resurrection. If you have purchased items for Southern Arizona Child Advocacy Center, please bring them with you to the meeting. All women of the church are welcome to attend our meetings. Snow Birds Looking for a Rental We have been snowbirds for the past 13 years, always finding a furnished rental for the first 3 months of the year (January-March). Each rental has been within a half a mile of Sabino High School, so we have been heavily involved with DSUMC and have formed many close friendships. We have yet to locate a home for 2018. Our overwhelming choice is the northeastern foothills, so that we can stay active at DSUMC. Please keep your eyes and ears open for any possibilities for us. Thank you and God s blessings, Ken and Roselle Partridge #317-213-4046 Congregational Care Team If anyone or anyone you know from our congregation ends up in the hospital or a rehab facility, please let the church office know immediately. We need to know this information, so that we can provide any assistance needed such as visits, calls, meals, prayers and support to family members as well. We appreciate your help with this. We can not help, if we do not know. Thank you. Friendly Reminder Tammy will be out of the office Monday, March 20th-Thursday, March 23rd. She will return any phone calls or emails upon her return to the church office. Thank you.
