Let s Set The Stage Like Judaism and Christianity, Islam is monotheistic, based on the belief in one God (Allah). Islam also teaches that Muhammad is the messenger of God. Islam emerged in the Arabian Peninsula in the 7 th century (600s). The followers of Islam are called Muslims. Muhammad worked to unite the Arabs under Islam. He urged Arabs to submit (believe in) to the one true God. Today, Islam is the world's second largest and fastest growing religion in the world, with close to 2 billion followers. The Origins of Islam The religion of Islam emerged in the Arabian Peninsula (Middle East). This region of southwestern Asia is mostly desert, yet it was home to Arab tribes in the 500s A.D. 3

Muhammad s Early Life Muhammad was born in the oasis town of Mecca around A.D. 570. Mecca is located in Saudi Arabia in the Middle East. 4

Mecca was a bustling market town at the crossroads of several caravan routes. Caravan Routes Caravan routes were the roads traveled by merchants or traders between cities. 5

Merchants traveled using camels. Mecca was also a thriving pilgrimage center. A pilgrimage center is where people travel to pray. 6

Muhammad s Early Life Arabia s deserts and trade centers shaped Muhammad s early life. In his youth, he worked as a shepherd (takes care of sheep). Later, he led caravans across the desert and became a successful merchant. Muhammad Becomes God s Messenger Muhammad was troubled by the moral ills (problems) of Meccan society, especially greed (wanting a lot of something like money or power). 7

Muhammad often went to a cave in the hills near Mecca to meditate. When he was about 40 years old he heard the voice of the archangel Gabriel calling him to be the messenger of God. Muhammad worked to unite the Arabs under Islam. He urged Arabs to submit (believe in) to the one true God. In Arabic, the word for God is Allah. 8

Muhammad died in 632, but Islam continued to spread. The Quran The Quran, the sacred text of Islam, teaches that God is allpowerful and compassionate. It also states that people are responsible for their own actions. To Muslims, the Quran contains the sacred word of God as revealed to Muhammad. 9

The Quran teaches about God s will and provides a guide to life. It focuses on honesty, trust, kindness and good behavior. The Quran sets harsh penalties for crimes such as stealing or murder. The Quran is only written in Arabic, which all Muslims learn. This shared language has helped unite Muslims from many regions throughout the world. 10

The Five Pillars of Islam All observant Muslims perform five basic duties, known as the Five Pillars of Islam. The Five Pillars of Islam The first pillar is to make a declaration of faith and believe in one God (Allah). Muhammed is also God s greatest prophet. 11

The second pillar is to pray 5 times a day. The time of day to pray are at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and night. Prayer should be performed facing towards Mecca. Although Muslims may pray anywhere, they often gather in houses of worship called mosques. 12

The third pillar is to give charity to the poor. The fourth pillar is to fast from sunrise to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan the month in which Muhammad received his first revelations from God. 13

The fifth pillar is to make the hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca, if a person is able. Pilgrims participate in ceremonies celebrating the actions of Muhammad. Jihad Another duty is jihad, or struggle in God s service. Jihad is usually a personal duty for Muslims, who focus on overcoming struggles within themselves. 14

At other times, jihad may be interpreted as a holy war to defend Islam and the Muslim community. Islam s Influence Islam is both a religion and a way of life. Its teachings shape the lives of Muslims around the world. Islamic law governs daily life and Muslim traditions determine proper behavior and influence family relations. 15
