Partners Easter 2014 in P R A Y E R Newsletter of the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer Our Mission: The Anglican Fellowship of Prayer serves the church by encouraging, facilitating, and promoting the understanding and discipline of prayer in the Anglican Communion. From our board Dear Friends, It s Palm Sunday as I begin this letter. Although we remembered Christ s passion at church today, His caring so much for us that His life on earth led to the cross, we also had a joyous procession into the church singing All Glory, Laud and Honor, to Thee, Redeemer King remembering another way that people felt about Him towards the end of His life on earth. In the spirit of honoring Jesus our Redeemer, who taught us, healed us, laid down His life for us, and rose in triumph from the dead, we approach this Easter season. We are so grateful for the returning health of board member Patricia Hayes, for whom we ve been praying since July of 2013. Not long after our meeting in Richmond, VA last April we learned that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer. At least one of the ambitious plans that we d made at the meeting had to go on hold. Not wanting to give up her leadership in prayer, we persuaded her not to resign from the board, but to stay on as an honorary board member. Long a believer in the power of intercessory prayer-- not only to keep those for whom we pray in the knowledge that they are loved and prayed for, but also to nourish the hope that God will answer prayers in the ways that we desire (although we know God may have other ways of answering us)-- Pat sent us periodic updates of her treatments and her progress. It was not always easy; there were setbacks. But there were always prayers showing her love for and trust in God. She recommended a book called The Hearing Heart, by Hannah Hurnard, the Gospel of Luke, and Lamentations 3:22-23: Because of the Lord s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Then on February 20, 2014 we got the wonderful news that the MRI report showed no evidence of spread. In March she sent prayers of thanksgiving for her returning energy and strength, a much appreciated Quiet Day sponsored by the Prayer Chain at her church in Beaverton, Oregon, and a visit to the symphony. In April, she sent pictures of a trip to Cannon Beach with husband Ray. Praise God. Celinda Scott, Corr. Sec y From the Diocese of Kentucky We were very sorry to hear of the death November 26, 2013 of a long-time friend of the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer, Betty Ann Allen of Louisville. Betty Ann s husband, Judge Charles Allen, also active in the AFP, died in 2000. Diocesan Representative Carla L. Rueckert-McCarty s mother was a close friend of Betty Ann; they shared a love of prayer. Carla writes: I got to know her when we both went to the AFP meeting in 1973 Betty Ann was a woman of enormous and unwavering faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. She had a delightful sense of humor and an unbounded source of energy Betty Ann had cancer for many years, and her belief as she battled this disease was phenomenal and inspiring.

From the Diocese of Massachusetts We welcome new Diocesan Representative Fr. Thomas P. Mulvey, Jr.! He is the rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Parish, located in Braintree, Massachusetts, and has enrolled his whole parish in the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer. They are beginning a course in The Parish as Center of Prayer ( 1986 by the AFP). From the Dioceses of Bermuda, Antigua and the Lesser Antilles, and New Jersey A lost and found story: Joy Knowles, from the Diocese of Bermuda, wrote recently asking if AFP still had Five Loaves and Two Fishes in its inventory. She had bought a copy when Mary Hilton not only managed the AFP Bookshelf, but also took books to countless meetings and conventions. Sadly, we no longer have it, but Mary Hilton remembered Joy and wished her well in her search. Yesterday we heard again from Joy, as follows: Joy here again, you would not believe it...i have been praying for God to help me find my book, AND TONIGHT I FOUND IT! Packed away in a huge old trunk under lots of blankets and clothing in my aunt s room. I had searched closets, boxes, suitcases, storage rooms and more boxes in those storage rooms...to no avail. Again I prayed to God and said if it's your will and this book can be a help to me, please let me find it. That's when I got a thought to look in my aunt's room. I searched everywhere then saw the old Trunk covered up. -- Celinda, I was praising God and had to share this excitement with someone, I figured you were helping me to look, so I would share my victory with you! Thanks again for trying to help me locate it, I really appreciated that. God bless you and yours! The book is Five Loaves and Two Fishes: New Life Through Inner Healing by Phoebe Cranor! It even still had the $5 dollar sticker on it from the conference...:-) I am so happy! God is so good! The Venerable Dr. Arnold Hollis of Bermuda shares the good news that his daughter, the Rev. Joanna Hollis, was instituted as the 22 nd rector of Christ Episcopal Church in New Brunswick, New Jersey on December 7, 2013. She had previously served as the rector of Trinity Church in Santa Barbara, California, and was the first woman from Bermuda to be ordained a priest. His adopted niece, the Rev. Dr. Anne-Marie Jeffery (daughter of the Rt. Rev. Alfred Jeffrey, Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Antigua and the Lesser Antilles), is also in New Jersey: she has been the rector of St. Peter s Episcopal Church in Perth Amboy since 2011. Frances Spring of Bermuda preaches at her home church, St. James, and sister church, St. James Chapel. She shares a link to a special song-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iquxj_h16y - and the following prayer from a friend, which begins Almighty Father, Creator of Heaven and earth and everything in between, we come before you with praise in our hearts, asking for Your never ending mercy.,,we ask for Your touch in all areas of need in our lives..be it for healing and health in our spirits, emotions, minds and bodies; a new job; freedom from debt; rebuilding of our relationships with our spouses, family members and friends. Father we believe that any situation You touch can never be the same We celebrate the 20 th anniversary of the Internet Prayer ministry of John Rohde and Bob Hilton! Let them know your prayers, or join the Prayer Warriors yourself, by accessing the AFP website at www.afp.org and clicking on the link Prayer Requests. We are so thankful, John and Bob, for this ministry. From AFP Canada We grieve with AFP Canada over the death in October, 2013 in Calgary of the AFP Canada director since 2007, the Rt. Rev. Gary Woolsey, after a long battle with brain cancer. He wrote Meditations from a Hospital Bed while in hospice. A warm, articulate, and adventurous man of God, he was a pilot, a biker, and served 25 remote aboriginal villages earlier in his ministry. Please pray for his family and for AFP Canada. Anglican Women at Prayer: Weaving our Bonds of Affection A wonderful conference for Anglican women from all over the world took place at Virginia Theological Seminary March 14-16. We are very thankful that three members of the AFP were able to participate. I was especially drawn to the AWaP conference because Helen Shoemaker and Polly Wiley, co-founders of the AFP, were members the Society of Companions of the Holy Cross, or SCHC. The SCHC was a co-sponsor of the conference. Many thanks to SCHC members for their prayers, participation, and notes of encouragement. We also thank Phoebe Griswold, a principal organizer of the conference, and the Center for Anglican Communion Studies (CACS) at Virginia Theological Seminary, which co-sponsored the conference. Students from CACS participated; it was wonderful to meet them. CACS also arranged for women students from the Msalato Theological College at St. John s University of Tanzania to be present via SKYPE and participate in discussions--during many of the talks. We also thank the Most Rev. Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Most Rev. Dr. Katherine Schori, Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, for their letters of support. AFP Canada was represented by Dr. Jane Richardson Jensen, DR of the Diocese of Calgary, Alberta for several years. She is a co-author of She Who Prays: A Woman s Interfaith Prayerbook and the author of Fire & Spirit: A Woman s Visionary Epic. She earned her doctorate at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, specializing in Old Testament and Hebrew. AFP US sponsored Gillian Delancy of Turks and Caicos Islands, Diocese of the Bahamas; here we are in the picture below.. Anglican Fellowship of Prayer www.afp.org Page 3

Gillian Delancy s reflections on the AWaP conference: When I was first invited to put my name forward as a prospective attendee at this conference I was very surprised. When I was asked to attend, it was a humbling experience for me and I looked forward with eager anticipation to the conference. There were many logistical hurdles that had to be overcome for me to get there but I did. And I know for certain that it was God and God alone working to allow me to have the experience. And what an awesome, inspiring, spirit-filled experience it was. I found that the presentations by the Rev Dr Eleanor Sanderson, from the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Polynesia, were excellent. She truly is a gifted person, but most of all I appreciated the group sessions. It was amazing to see how women who had never met before could bond so effectively in such a short period of time. It proved that prayer and Bible Study can indeed cause us to weave bonds of affection. The closing Eucharist was another high point for me. I had never, until then, been afforded the privilege to be among so many ordained women all at once. I was privileged to have been asked to assist with the chalice at that service and I will never forget that experience. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer for making it possible for me to attend the conference. Initially, I thought it would be an opportunity to gain insight and direction in my own spiritual life and undoubtedly it has energized me and given me renewed vigor to pursue a closer walk with God. Jane Jensen s reflection on the AWaP conference: I realized yet again the power of prayer and the prayerful power we share when two or three, or say 110 or 120, are gathered together. As a small group leader I experienced firsthand the Maori belief in the unending thread that s woven through the fabric of the world connecting all of us together. One of my group members from Houston had been mentored by a woman who was herself mentored by my own mother years before. AWaP gave us the chance to pass on the gifts of mentoring and being mentored by women of faith. I gained a sense of our place in the endless thread as we benefit from those who have gone before us, whether they are Companions of the Holy Cross, or the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer, etc. and ourselves as the supports of our communities in some future time. Conferences like AWaP strengthen the link backwards and forwards. During the Sunday Eucharist the phrase a threefold cord is not quickly broken, Eccl. 4:12, echoed through my mind repeatedly. Using the AFP website as a tool for praying for the whole Anglican Communion The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Polynesia that s the name of the first province listed when you click on the link to Province Lists and Maps, because Aotearoa begins with the letter a. I never thought I d meet someone from Aotearoa, but I did Dr. Ellie Sanderson was one of the principal speakers at the AWaP conference. She was wonderful a young mother, a brilliant professor of theology, a gifted and imaginative and courageous priest who knows her whole province as well as her own parish and diocese. On the website (www.afp.org): once you access the province itself, you can keep following links to dioceses and maps. It s a helpful way to learn about the vastness of the Anglican Communion, and to pray for the Whole Church a little every day naming a particular province or diocese. Anglican Fellowship of Prayer 1106 Mansfield Ave. Indiana, PA 15701 Change Service Requested An Easter Prayer Glorious Risen Lord, we remember how they came up and took hold of your feet and worshipped you on that first Easter. Let us worship you with gladness on this new Easter, joined by the company of the Easter people. We worship you with the joy that we have met you in many places--in the house of prayer, in our homes, in our callings, and our inner being. Now may our worship turn into witness to tell the world that you are alive, and that you give new life to all who come to you; who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. +Donald Hultstrand APRIL 2014
