Cross of Glory & West Freeborn Lutheran Churches Hartland, MN Sunday Morning Worship times: West Freeborn: ~ Cross of Glory 10:30 a.m. *The Joint Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 9 th at West Freeborn* Cross of Glory & West Freeborn Churches - Joint Council Meeting July 5, 2016 Cross of Glory s president, Jerry Morstad, called the meeting to order. Present were: Jerry Morstad, Pat Ehrich, Paul Lynne, Sonja Honstad, Cathy Crowe, Ron Bartness, Bob Indrelie, Milo Madson, Steve Ausen, Martin Johnson, Rachel Knudson, Tim Bartness, Matt Hoelscher, Mike Erich, Kristi Thofson, Doug Jacobs, Orlen (Corky) Modene, Mike Brekke, and Pastor Mark Hillmer. Devotions were given by Pastor Mark and he led the council in prayer. Pastor Mark mentioned that he would like to open a discussion on trying a new worship service format for the remaining four Sundays in July. He would preach a series based on one theme, for example, Fruits of the Spirit, and not have a typical liturgical format. Rather, there would be a great deal of singing and a longer sermon. He states that this is a similar format to other denominations and we could return to the liturgy after this series would be over. There were no objections from the councils. Pastor Mark also made a note that there is a shop connected with the Wells United Methodist Church, the Back Door Clothes Closet, whose proceeds go to assist people in need. They have generously given to the Modene and Habana families. He recommended that if people have items to donate to a second-hand store, they should consider taking them to Wells, as this outreach helps families in many local communities. The secretary s report from the last Joint Council meeting was read by Sonja Honstad. There were no additions or corrections. Report was approved as read. Open Issues: 1. Cathy Crowe gave an update on the Call Committee. She stepped in as chair of the committee while Martin Johnson was traveling last month. The call committee has received two names of potential interviewees. They happen to be a married couple. They will also be interviewing at First Lutheran in Albert Lea. This Thursday, our call committee will be coordinating our interviews with these candidates so that they are able to interview with our parish the same evening as having interviews with the call committee from First Lutheran. 2. The siding of the parsonage should be replaced this summer. We need volunteers to help remove the current siding on July 14 th at 6pm. 1

3. There will be two joint worship services this summer to be followed by a potluck brunch. July 17 th, West Freeborn will host the joint 9am service. August 21 st, Cross of Glory will be the host. Cathy Crowe made a motion to have at the brunches a basket for a freewill donation to be split between the Modene and Habana families. Corky Modene seconded. 4. Pastor Mark stated that Wednesday Sunday School will not be a feasible option at this time. Cindy Stelter has offered to be an advisor if West Freeborn chose to try Wednesday night classes. Also, although not an ideal situation, the families with Sunday School-aged children from West Freeborn are encouraged to consider bringing their students to Cross of Glory on Sunday mornings to participate. 5. Pastor Mark also mentioned that he has been consulting with the medical field regarding his back pain and may be facing back surgery in the future. He will keep us updated. 6. Pat Erich and Cathy Crowe, treasurers of our churches, audited the office account and offered a recommendation for changes. They suggested that the office account should be used primarily to purchase stamps and postage and that ink purchases be done through the office supply company that we use. They further recommended the Cross of Glory petty cash be separated into another account and that the office account should be audited twice a year. Doug Jacobs made a motion to adopt the recommendations of the treasurers. Ron Bartness seconded. This summary for the minutes is not a complete and comprehensive listing of their recommendations but rather, an overview. For those interested in a more detailed report, please contact Pat Ehrich. The joint council meeting was adjourned and to allow the councils to reconvene for our respective council meetings. Rachel Knudson - Secretary, Cross of Glory Cross of Glory Trustees and Deacons Meeting, July 5, 2016 Jerry Morstad called the second half of the meeting to order. Randy Light, and Emily Light were absent. Arlene Thofson was also present at the meeting. Rachel Knudson read the secretary s report. The minutes were approved as read. Cathy Crowe presented the treasurer s report. Paul Lynne made a motion to accept the treasurer s report and pay the bills as money allows. Martin Johnson seconded. Old Business: We have discussed the necessity of making a decision regarding repaving the street behind the church. Jerry Morstad has been collecting opinions from congregation members as we need to make a decision soon whether to proceed when Ulland s will be working on the city streets and the cost of asphalt, while still expensive, would be more affordable. Arlene Thofson asked to have the floor for a few minutes. She stated that she and Virgil feel very strongly about having the street paved and being in good condition. They are willing to leave a check tonight for $5000 to go toward the paving. If the council decides to proceed with the alternative option of not paving and letting the asphalt degrade into a more gravel-like substance, she asked that their check be returned to them. Arlene left to let the council discuss. Jerry stated that we will get no assisting funds from the Hartland Evangelical Lutheran Church, who shares the cemetery with us. The cemetery board will be meeting this coming Saturday and it was suggested that they be presented with the issue and encouraged to offer some monetary contribution. After discussing how to proceed and hearing differing opinions, Cathy Crowe made a motion to give Ulland s permission to repave the street to the cemetery. Ron Bartness seconded. We will encourage further donations for this project, as well as reminding people that there is a fund set up to receive donations to contribute to air conditioning the sanctuary. 2

New Business: There was no new business. Paul Lynne made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Tim Bartness seconded. Closed with the Lord s Prayer. Rachel Knudson, Secretary West Freeborn Lutheran Church Council Meeting July 5, 2016 The West Freeborn Church Council met on July 5, 2016, following the joint council meeting at Cross of Glory. President Orlen Modene called the meeting to order. Present were: Pat Ehrich, Mike Ehrich Milo Madson, Doug Jacobs, Bob Indrelie, Steve Ausen and Sonja Honstad. Secretary s report was read by Sonja Honstad. Motion made by Bob Indrelie and seconded by Doug Jacobs to approve report. Motion passed. Treasurer s report was read by Pat Ehrich. Motion was made by Steve Ausen and seconded by Mike Ehrich to approve report. Motion passed. Old Business: Pastor reported bill from Wayne s Repair for service on Habanas car has been paid. The total was $ 214.85. We started with $355.00, so we have $140.00 left. May possibly be used to build a ramp for Charlotte Modene. The Clothes Closet of Wells is going to give a generous donation of $400.00 to go towards needs for Brandon Habana and Charlotte Modene. Joint Service Brunch: The first one will be held at West Freeborn on July 17 th. Service will be at with brunch to follow. The free will offering will be divided between the Charlotte Modene family and the Brandon Habana family. Roof and tuck pointing repair were discussed. The estimate for the 2 sections of roof needed is 412,450. The roof won t be replaced before this fall. A motion was made by Steve Ausen to go ahead and do the tuck-pointing at a cost of $6,000. Seconded by Bob Indrelie. Motion passed. New Business: Stained glass windows in main part of the church need attention. Doug Morrison is painting them and said the wood is rotting. We had a discussion on ways to repair or cover these windows. Suggestions were to replace the wood, cover the wood with metal, cover the window with plexi-glass or storm windows. Sunday School was discussed as to how to get more students to attend. It was suggested we talk to the Prairie River Bible Camp and the Good Earth Village Bible Cam to get ideas or suggestions. Motion made by Mike Ehrich and seconded by Bob Indrelie to adjourn the meeting Motion passed.
