A Letter from Father. Page 2 September 1, 2013 HAPPY LABOR DAY, SCHOOL DAYS AND PEACEFUL END OF SUMMER! Thank you for your labor of love for our Parish of St. Francis de Sales and the Missions. May God bless you for your support and solidarity with St. Francis and the Propagation of the Faith. As the children are heading back to the classrooms, it is going to be difficult for many of them to settle down and become acclimated to life in the school environment. Recently when Pope Francis was with the youth at World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he welcomed them and reminded them that they arrived there as disciples, but would depart as missionaries. Similarly, with us and our school children, the Year of Faith is a gift offered to us to draw us closer to the Lord, to be His disciples and His missionaries, to renew our faith and our lives. His Holiness encouraged the youth to Put on Christ in their lives and through their witness to the faith, they can teach the language of charity, goodness and service (the cost, sacrifice and reward of the commitment required of a disciple are fulfilling forms of labor). Seizing some moments out of each day in our spiritual life, helps us focus on the purpose and satisfaction of our work. Each time we allow God to enter into our lives, we become a more loving, generous, forgiving and peaceful person: Once upon a time, there was a kind of worthless teenage boy who never did much wrong, but he never did much right either. He got the kind of grades which would just barely get him into college. He helped out around the house only when he had to. He loafed on his job, doing only enough so that he wouldn t get fired. He was an extremely good athlete, but he never went out for any of the teams. He avoided all school projects. Everyone said he was lazy and he did not deny it. He just thought life was boring. He spent all of his time reading adventure stories and romances, which were not boring to him. The priest in his parish said that he was one of the best young men of the 13 th Century. He acknowledged that he wished he had a time machine so he could go back to that century and serenade lovely damsels on their balconies at night. Well, when spring arrived, he announced that he was going to South America for the summer as a volunteer to work with the poor people up in the mountains. His mother and father both thought it was a waste of time and told him that he should remain at home and earn some money for his college tuition. He told everyone that work was boring. The priest reminded him that It s not medieval Seville. Everyone told him not to go and his parents refused to pay for his plane fare. He took all of his money from presents out of his account and went anyway. What happened? Well, the people in the mountain village where he worked just loved him, especially because they never knew anyone who worked so hard. The priests reported back to his parish priest that this kid was one of the finest human beings they had ever known. He returned home and his eyes glowed with excitement and eagerness. He didn t care what anyone said - he would return to his missionary work again next summer. This young man was immersed in God s love and it provided him the security, strength and hope he had been seeking. He had found peace, consolation, courage, serenity and joy by working so generously with the poor. May you have a great Labor Day and know that God blesses you for your great missionary work, your labor and love for St. Francis de Sales Parish. In Christ s love,

Beginning next Sunday, September 8th, we will be resuming our regular Sunday Mass schedule: Saturday (Vigil Mass): 5:00 PM (English) Sunday: 7:00 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:30 AM (English), 5:00 PM (Spanish) HUMILITY Today's reading from Sirach celebrates what will become the theme of today's Gospel: humility. Pride causes us to demand from others an exalted estimate of our status, but humility allows us to see things more clearly. It allows us a broader perspective. Humility promises us the favor of God and the love of those who know us. The second reading is a study in contrasts: the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai and the giving of salvation on Mount Zion. The Law's appearance is greeted with solemnity, mystery, even fear. But Christians are not to be afraid. Coming to God's mountain with Jesus, "the mediator of a new covenant," is a happy, exuberant experience. The parable in today's Gospel concerns the danger of pride and the necessity of humility. The banquet setting, often used by Jesus, is a symbol of heaven's abundance and of the fulfillment of God's promise. The parable is not simply good advice on how to avoid embarrassment; it is about salvation. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 6 September 1, 2013 YEAR OF FAITH: SEPTEMBER 2013 Virtues to Practice and Obstacles to Beware on the Journey of Faith Meditation Faith and charity each require the other. Many Christians lovingly dedicate their lives to the lonely, marginalized, or excluded, as those who most deserve our attention and support, for in them the reflection of Christ's own face is seen (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 14). The parish's "Year of Programs" revs up just as the Church's "Year of Faith" winds down. But faith, as Pope Benedict has reminded us, is a journey that lasts a lifetime. September's first two Sunday Gospels bid us to embrace humility, the non-negotiable prerequisite for communion with God in prayer and with our neighbor in self-sacrificing service (Catechism, 2559, 2631) and to let nothing deter us from following Jesus. Mid- September's "Lost and Found Sunday" asks: Is Jesus' picture of God mine - that is, a shepherd risking all to save one lost sheep, a woman scouring the house to find one lost coin, a father forgetting past wrongs to welcome home a lost son? If so, has this Year of Faith made me "look" anymore like that God? On September's final Sundays, Amos, Israel's "Prophet of Justice," joins Jesus in warning us about the dangers of wealth. Are we "children of light" as eager to serve others as "children of the world" are to serve themselves? Nor is it sufficient simply to "do no harm." In Jesus' parable, the wealthy man did nothing hurtful to Lazarus; his sin was doing nothing at all! Mission Change whatever in my life contradicts the humility that Jesus expects of his disciples; seek the lost; forgive unconditionally; open my eyes that I may see and serve Christ in my neighbor.
