SEPTEMBER 2017 King Avenue United Methodist Church to Host The Intersection of Racial & LGBTQ Identity Talking about race, faith, and sexuality isn t always easy, but it s needed now more than ever. King Avenue United Methodist Church is proud to welcome social justice activist and LGBT worship leader Darren Calhoun to Columbus on Sunday, October 1 at 7 p.m. to share his personal journey to bridge the divide that exists between racial and sexual inclusivity. Darren s program, The Intersection of Racial & LGBTQ Identity, provides a welcoming and engaging voice in this difficult conversation space. CARILLON PAGE 3 September Special Offering September 17 In 2015, King Avenue became one of six church that make up the Hilliard Adopt A House affiliate of Habitat for Humanity Mid Ohio. In that time, we have helped families build a new house on Genessee Road, re-hab houses on Bellevue in Columbus and Third in Urbancrest. This summer we are building a new house on Myrtle in Columbus. Each year, our congregation is first or second in both hours worked and number of volunteers. We are extremely grateful to our crew which is led by Trena Brown and Larry Ziniel. Each new home costs at least $50,000. Please contribute generously to our offering on September 17. Our goal is $3000. Affordable housing is a huge need in our area. Thank you note Dear Brothers and Sisters at King Avenue UMC, Thank you all so much for the amazing card and framed photo of KAUMC. It was wonderful to be remembered on the day of my commission. It was my foundation of faith at KAUMC that started me on this journey, and you will always be my home church no matter where God calls me to serve! Peace and Blessings, Randy May

The group will begin its fall classes on September 10th and will be discovering The Five Marks of a Methodist. This course created by Steve Harper, is based on Methodist founder John Wesley's treatise, The Character of a Methodist. This journey helps us understand and live out what it means to be a United Methodist. Each class will begin with a short video followed by discussion. The Five Marks of a Methodist was offered during the summer and it was so well received that we thought we would do it again. Blessed Believers meets Sundays at 10am upstairs in the Fireside Room. No book or signup is required. Connie Hook and Evy Hummon will be your facilitators. Sermon Series on King Avenue's Vision and Two Discussion Groups King Avenue Vision--What Do You See? CARILLON PAGE 7 READING BUDDIES by Colleen Ogle Be a Reading Buddy Two Trainings Coming Up! King Avenue UMC has a partnership with Hubbard Mastery Elementary School in which we supply moral, material, and manpower support for the children of the school. One of the main components of our partnership is supplying Reading Buddies. We need more Reading Buddies! Laura Matthews will conduct two training sessions for all persons who are interested in becoming volunteers with the program. They are: Sunday afternoon, September 24, 5:30-6:30 pm in the Chapel at King Avenue and Sunday morning, October 1, 10-11 am in the Chapel at King Avenue. Only one training session is needed--the two dates are being offered for your convenience. Reading Buddies do companion reading with children, to help them build competence, confidence and enjoyment in reading. Children in the state of Ohio are required to pass a reading competency test before being promoted to 4th grade-- because basic reading skills are critical to all future learning. Reading Buddies agree to come once weekly for at least 30 minutes and are usually paired one-on-one with the same child for the school year. To find out more about this wonderful program, listen to the Reading Buddy witness on September 10. You can register for the Reading Buddy Training program through REALM CONNECT. If you have questions, please contact colleen@kingave.org PRIDE NIGHT AT KING'S ISLAND The bus will leave the King Avenue parking lot at 4:30 PM on Friday, September 8 and arrive at the park around 6:00 PM.
