To promote, encourage, and facilitate in a harmonious and inclusive manner all recreational aviation activities with an emphasis on education, safety and fellowship. It is also the mid-point in the year and that means that the election process for the coming year is about to begin again. I will appoint three members (present or not) to begin the process of selecting candidates for 2015. All of the positions are technically up for the taking, and as long as you are a member in good standing both locally and nationally, you can drop your name in the hat for 2015. Message from the President By Keith Gay Our meeting will be held on the 1st of July at Lovezzola s Pizza where dinner will start at 6:00 PM The strategic social hour and business meeting will follow at 6:30 PM Please make sure that you take an opportunity to share our group and events with your friends and family who have an interest in the amazing world of aviation, because the phrase, the more, the merrier is exponential when in the world of aviation. Greetings everyone! I hope that this newsletter finds you and yours well, and maybe with a few new adventures in the log book. It never ceases to amaze me how fast the months seem to fly by in a whirlwind with a hint of 100LL floating through the air. We had a fantastic evening with the folks of the Savannah Aviation Association, at the Airport Pavilion, where they hosted our group to a superb BBQ dinner, some good quality hanger stories. Gary Arms even brought out the infamous corn hole game for all to enjoy. The camaraderie was nice. It always amazes me how people from all walks of life are joined in aviation. This event started wheels to turning; I am thinking we might want to do this sort of event again with the SSA, and maybe a few other organizations over the next few months food for thought for Tuesday night. I would like to acknowledge Mr. Gary Arms as we have had some amazing presentations thanks thus far, but unfortunately no matter how solid your plan may be Murphy will find his way to tweak it ever so slightly. With that said; our presenter for July had some personal matters to attend to and will not be able to present at our July meeting. I think that we should use this time for some socializing, strategic planning, and the passing of a few hanger tales across the table. I know that the 4th of July is looming in the near future but I would ask that you come out and help us put our thinking caps on, and try to come up with some fun things to do as a group for the remaining months of this year. Design Group Report By Willard White Meeting: June 24, 2014 In Attendance: Joe Buttner Doug McKissack Esteban Villa Willard White Doug began by briefing us on the last Chapter meeting. I couldn't attend that meeting, but asked Doug to poll the Chapter members to discover if there is some interest in a particular project. We wanted to know if there is more interest in a different design project, or would members be interested in some sort of hands-on project like finishing an experimental airplane or restoring an antique airplane. Doug reports that he got no response from the general members. We continued the discussion with our own thoughts and ideas about where we'd like to go and what we'd like to do. Esteban brought up the fuselage mock-up which we had previously agreed to consider. Basically we would fabricate the cockpit section of the fuselage. No doubt we would learn a lot about the fuselagewing interface area in the process. We might still learn a thing or two about squeezing, pulling, and drilling out rivets in the process. Doug suggested we call it an engineering mock-up. Joe suggested we do something involving the local Civil Air Patrol, Explorer Scouts, or Boy Scouts; something that would introduce kids to aviation and educate them. We had some enthusiasm for that idea and bandied around some ideas about what to do. The construction of a wing was suggested. We still have a lot of engineering work to do before cutting metal on a wing, but at least it is portable and would fit through a personnel door (something a full size cockpit might not do). An outer wing section would be 75 inches long; the chord is 39.6 inches. Without an aileron it should weigh about 30 pounds. We calculated that, to stress test the wing to 4g would require about 44 (50 lb.) sand bags. The fuel tank came up for discussion. We had agreed on a Piper Cherokee type leading edge fuel cell. The tank is built and sealed and then installed against the forward spar. The flange on the trailing edge of the tank must be stretched and must be able to seal against the inside of the leading edge skin. The two requirements were accomplished easily by Piper in the factory, perhaps not so easily by amateurs. We also suggested designing, building and testing a motor mount for a (135 lb.) engine I happen to have. This would involve purchasing a TIG welder and learning to use it. The discussion finally revolved around what we must have before we get much further; a place to work. Ideas: Discover who has the house-hanger and Hodges and request to share it (and expenses). Ask if we can rent space in the Quonset hanger at Hodges. Can the little office partition in the Quonset hanger be rented? Would Clayton consider renting us part of his hanger? Would Bill consider renting us part of his shop? We were rolling with some pretty good ideas. But at this point a fast moving storm was approaching Savannah and we adjourned rather quickly. We agreed to meet next time on Tuesday, 22 July. See you all at the Chapter meeting. Greater Savannah Chapter 1514 Newsletter Volume 4, Issue 7 July 01, 2014 Page 3

Dennis Varga works at the railroad museum, and is a retired Navy pilot who had worked on flight test of the C- 130. The main presentation was given by Glen Phelps from EAA Chapter 477 in Charleston. He started with a brief history of the Vari-eze and its derivatives, including the various models of Cosy. He then described the process of building his own Cosy, which is undergoing taxi tests now, and will fly shortly. The committee reports are as follows: President s Report - No report. The meeting opened with a welcome to our guests, who were invited to tell the meeting a little about themselves. The guests included: Don Paley has been working at Chatham County Mosquito Control as a service tech for the last 8 months. He has rotorcraft and fixed wing ratings. Peter Semetis is retired from Pan Am, a former air station owner, and is now semi-retired on Hilton Head. He works Newsletter/Website Report - No report. Design Team Report - The design group has nearly completed the prototype aileron, and has turned back to wing design. We are concerned about falling attendance, and would like to solicit ideas from the membership about what they would like to see. Possibilities are to continue with detail design of the current project, start a new design project, start a more hands-on project (prototype fuselage?), or get a group together to buy either an old airplane to restore or a partially completed kit to finish. Air Cam Fly-In at Heaven s Landing. A multi-day Air Cam fly-in was held June 19 through June 21 at Heaven's Landing (GE99), Clayton, GA., in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Chapter 1514 members, Bill Leftwich and Joe Weitzel, attended. They flew the 240 miles from Hodge s Airpark in their Air Cam #2 at 60 mph. The trip took five hours, which included three fuel stops along the way. The return trip was faster with a tail wind pushing us all the way to Savannah, and, our newly overhauled Rotax 582's performed flawlessly. At least twelve Air Cams were present during the event. Bill Leftwich shared these photos with the Chapter. He commented that the weather was perfect with no rain or windy days and the views were spectacular. Photos and photo captions courtesy of Bill Leftwich Above: The group shot was taken on Thursday, however, Joe and I got there Friday so we didn't get included.
