Sermon Corner This week will be the last sermon in the series, Five Themes from James. This Week s Message: Five themes from James- Praying in Faith Prayer is a powerful tool. Far too often Christians neglect their prayer life. God says that through prayer, we can change the ordinary into the super natural. Who are we praying for today? Scripture: James 5:13-20 Next Week s Message: True and Lasting Peace Most people seek after peace. But what is true peace in a world with ISSIS, poverty, racism, the uncertainty of the election, and more? True and lasting peace can only come through our relationship with Jesus Christ. Scripture: Romans 5:1-11 Page 2

Adult Membership Class Our adult class this fall is pretty large (23 already). Because of this we re offering two times to attend the class as outlined below. There will be two classes during each time session. Try to catch a first and a second class in either the same session or mix and match with the two sessions (this will be clear below I hope). First session - time frame 12:30-1:30 pm -- Sunday - November 13 & November 20 Second Session - time frame 9:45-10:45 am -- Sunday - December 11 & December 18 Example: The material for each first & second class will be the same so if you can make November 13 but not the November 20 - you could attend December 18 for your second class (does that make sense?). Please let the office know if you are interested in attending and what classes you will be attending so we can plan location and materials. Page 4

Poe Endowment Contribution As some of you know, the Poe family has been part of this church for almost 100 years. Gertrude Poe and family established the Poe Endowment, identifying five areas within the church to periodically receive a contribution from the endowment to further their respective ministry. For the year 2016 the family has identified the Music Department as the recipient of a $400.00 donation. That donation was used to design, construct, and install a new cabinet for storing the materials required to further spread the word through music. A special thanks to Harry and Leah Ellinger of Modern Home Design and members of First Church for their efforts. An extra special thanks to the Poe family for this generous donation in helping First United Methodist Church of Laurel spread the Word of the Gospel. Page 5

Page 6 A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to all the lovely ladies who organized the Bride Wore White Tea. It was a day the girls will not soon forget. Thank you Dorothy Tiffany for the use of your stunning home. Thank you Trudie Myers, Cherilyn Hostetler and Pam Phillips for preparing and serving the yummy food and tea. Thank you to Ann Marie Miller and Wilma Foster for the precious gifts for each girl. Last but not least thank you Debbie Schneider for teaching this meaningful and important class.

HELP US FEED JESUS Your Help Needed to Feed Area Homeless (Donations accepted through Friday October 28) Dear FUMC Family and Friends, As we say a prayer of thanks to God before each meal, we have many neighbors in the Laurel community who whisper a prayer for something anything to eat. The Loukota Small Group, a ministry team within First United Methodist Church (FUMC), will prepare a hot meal and serve it to guests of the Grassroots Day Resource Center (GDRC) in Jessup, Maryland. However, we need the help of our FUMC family to purchase the menu items. Will you partner with us to show Christ to the hungry? We ve individually listed the needed food items on index cards which can be found at our ministry table in the narthex (lobby). Following today s service, we ask that you take a moment to stop by the table and select a card (or several) for the items you will provide. Please drop off your food donations at the church no later than Friday, October 28. Financial donations will also be accepted. The Grassroots Day Resource Center serves members of the homeless community and, along with meals, helps restore personal dignity by meeting basic needs including: showers, clothing, laundry, providing a mailing address, referrals, and other services. On average, the Center serves 50-70 individuals (on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays). For many guests, this is their only regular meal. Please partner with us as we serve those in need and in turn, serve Christ Himself. We can t do it without you. Thank you for your compassion and selflessness. Together, we can be used by God to transform lives as we demonstrate the love and reality of the living Jesus. Stop by our table in the lobby after service to pick up your card(s). We d love to greet and thank you personally! For the Glory of God, The Loukota Small Group Then the righteous will answer Him, Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? The King will answer and say to them, Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me. Page 10
