For my article this month I offer you the Easter Sermon of St. John Chrysostom, one of the fathers of the early church. It is read every Easter morning in Orthodox Churches and I find it to be a nice meditation on the meaning of Easter. Read it slowly and go back to it throughout the season of Easter as there is much to contemplate. Happy Easter! EASTER SERMON OF ST. JOHN CHRYSOS- TOM (c. 400) Are there any who are devout lovers of God? Let them enjoy this beautiful bright festival! If any have toiled from the first hour, let them receive their due reward; If any have come after the third hour, let him with gratitude join in the Feast! And he that arrived after the sixth hour, let him not doubt; for he too shall sustain no loss. And if any delayed until the ninth hour, let him not hesitate; but let him come too. And he who arrived only at the eleventh hour, let him not be afraid by reason of his delay. For the Lord is gracious and receives the last even as the first. He gives rest to him that comes at the eleventh hour, as well as to him that toiled from the first. To this one He gives, and upon another He bestows. He accepts the works as He greets the endeavor. The deed He honors and the intention He commends. Let us all enter into the joy of the Lord! Are there any who are grateful servants? Let them rejoice and enter into the joy of their Lord! Are there any weary with fasting? Let them now receive their wages! First and last alike receive your reward; rich and poor, rejoice together! Sober and slothful, celebrate the day! You that have kept the fast, and you that have not, rejoice today for the Table is richly laden! Feast royally on it, the calf is a fatted one. Let no one go away hungry. Partake, all, of the cup of faith. Enjoy all the riches of His goodness!

Let no one grieve at his poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed. Let no one mourn that he has fallen again and again; for forgiveness has risen from the grave. Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free. He has destroyed it by enduring it. He destroyed Hell when He descended into it. He put it into an uproar even as it tasted of His flesh. Isaiah foretold this when he said, "You, O Hell, have been troubled by encountering Him below." Hell was in an uproar because it was done away with. It was in an uproar because it is mocked. It was in an uproar, for it is destroyed. It is in an uproar, for it is annihilated. It is in an uproar, for it is now made captive. Hell took a body, and discovered God. It took earth, and encountered Heaven. It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it did not see. O death, where is thy sting? O Hell, where is thy victory? Christ is Risen, and you, o death, are annihilated! Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down! Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice! Christ is Risen, and life is liberated! Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead; for Christ having risen from the dead, is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Him be Glory and Power forever and ever. Amen! Pastor Warren Geier When leaving the church please remember to make sure that all lights are turned off when you leave and to make sure the back door is locked and closed behind you.

In 2019, Emanuel will celebrate 125 years of ministry! We invite all current and former members to be a part of the celebration. If you have moved from the area or are out of touch with Emanuel, please send us your mailing address via Facebook or e-mail (emanuel@tds.net) so that we can send more information on what will happen during our anniversary year. If your children were baptized, confirmed or married at Emanuel, send their addresses, too! We are now putting together a cookbook/biography and invite all former and current members to submit recipes, a picture, and a short remembrance of your time at Emanuel. Send via e-mail or hard copy to Emanuel Lutheran Church P.O. Box 160, Skandia, MI 49885. Your help is needed to raise funds for the 2018 World Hunger Campaign. The challenge of hunger in America is great. The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture has said 41.2 million Americans were living in food-insecure households in 2016. The challenge of hunger in the world is even greater. But we have an opportunity to join with all congregations in the Northern Great Lakes Synod to work to change this by our donations to the World Hunger Campaign. Look for the Campaign collection basket in the Fellowship Hall. All funds raised will be turned in to the Synod during the May Assembly. Our weekly contribution totals will be posted on the bulletin board by the serving window. Working together, these contributions will grow to a significant amount! All spare change is welcome! Please consider making a donation weekly during this Campaign.

Thank you to Sandi Ruotsi for sponsoring our bulletins during the month of April in memory of her brother Bob. Easter Flowers Thank you to all who helped purchase Easter lilies and spring flowers to adorn our altar Easter morning. Thank you to those people of Emanuel who donated a total of $139.12 to Saint Vincent De Paul. Sign Up Sheets are in the fellowship hall window to sponsor monthly bulletins (cost $25 per month) and to volunteer to serve coffee during fellowship. Thank you for helping! THANK YOU SAVING AND BRINGING IN YOUR ECONO-FOODS RECEIPTS THEY REALLY DO ADD UP! Our receipts were tallied and this year have added up to $28,966 which should give our church a donation of approximately $289! Thank You Econo-Foods for your generous We Share Receipt Program.

This summer the church sanctuary will be getting a new roof.! Bids are being received for this this project and the Stewardship Committee has committed to leading the fundraising! The first fundraiser will be a Community Dinner at Emanuel, Saturday, April 21 2:00-6:00 PM. The menu will include turkey, ham and scalloped potatoes. Congregation members will be asked to make and donate salads and desserts. A free-will offering will be taken to support the cost of the new roof. Keep an eye for opportunities to help with this event!
