2017- (-June) Annual Fcus Annual Fcus Gal - Our prayer is that frm 2017 t June we will each understand the kingdm f Gd, hw it is lived ut, and hw we can reflect it in every aspect f ur lives. Key Verse Acts 28:30-31, He lived there tw whle years at his wn expense, and welcmed all wh came t him, prclaiming the kingdm f Gd and teaching abut the Lrd Jesus Christ with all bldness and withut hindrance. Annual Fcus Resurces : Cntinuing Educatin fr Elders, Staff, and Deacns: Kingdm Calling, by Amy Sherman Supplemental Small Grup Studies: In additin t ur fall Chapel-wide small grup study and the sermn questins prvided each week thrughut the year, small grups may wish t explre the fllwing small grup studies t supplement the themes f the annual fcus. Optin 1: Life n Missin, by Dustin Willis and Aarn Ce Optin 2: Gspel Shaped Wrk, by Tm Nelsn (available n RightNw Media) Optin 3: James, by Francis Chan (available n RightNw Media) Ratinale fr the Fcus: We cncluded ur 2016-2017 series n Mvement with a study f the Bk f Acts. Thrughut the year, and specifically in the series n the Bk f Acts that we called Serving a Mvement, we examined hw Gd mved in the early church and hw the Hly Spirit mved and wrked, transfrming lives and empwering an unstppable frce his Church. We hped in this final series that we wuld all ask urselves the questin, What rle can I play in this mvement? Clearly we are each called individually, as well as crprately, t engage in this mvement. It was Jesus prmise t us that thrugh the pwer f his Spirit he wuld lead us t becme his witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and t the ends f the earth (Acts 1:8). Witnesses. We are all witnesses, and we are all called, invited, even cmmanded t becme just that: witnesses t the wrld. But what des that lk like? After a year f studying 1

Mvement, we are left asking questins abut what may be next fr us and what it lks like t jin the Mvement. Questins like: What des it lk like t engage in the Mvement f Gd? I get it, we are t mve. But where are we mving? Hw d I engage? What am I suppsed t d? Hw can my everyday life be abut mvement? Hw d I mve within the Church and in my cmmunity? These are great questins t be asking. These are questins that Luke may have even wanted us t be asking as he wrte the Bk f Acts. We all must certainly be cnvinced that each f us has a rle t play in serving Gd s Mvement. This cnvictin and these questins have led many f us t engage the wrld arund us differently: t speak the truth f Jesus bldly, t serve mre diligently in ur cmmunity, t intentinally build new relatinships, and humbly seek recnciliatin in brken nes, t spend mre time in prayer and in quiet rest, t intentinally surrender mre f ur lives t Jesus, t rely mre fully n the Hly Spirit wh empwers us t live and mve! But certainly, there are still questins, and still mre t engage in as we learn t jin Gd humbly, bediently, and curageusly in his Mvement. Smething that jumped ff the pages as we studied the Bk f Acts this past spring was the literary bkends that Luke used as he wrte the awe-inspiring accunt f the early church. The first bkend is fund in Acts 1:3 where Luke tells us that in the frty days fllwing Jesus resurrectin and prir t his ascensin, Jesus taught his disciples abut the kingdm f Gd. At first glance this may nt be a surprising reality. Luke recrded many times in his Gspel that Jesus spke and taught abut the kingdm f Gd. Thirty-tw times t be exact. But as we cncluded ur study f Acts we lked at the final tw verses that Luke wrte abut Paul (the final tw verses in the Bk f Acts) during his huse arrest in Rme. Luke wrte that Paul lived there tw whle years at his wn expense, and welcmed all wh came t him, prclaiming the kingdm f Gd and teaching abut the Lrd Jesus Christ with all bldness and withut hinderance (Acts 28:30-31). The secnd bkend! Paul prclaimed the kingdm f Gd. It seems that Luke wants us t knw that bth understanding and prclaiming the kingdm f Gd is imprtant. Imprtant t us as we fllw Jesus, and imprtant fr us t share with the wrld arund us. Embracing the kingdm f Gd is a key cmpnent f serving Gd s Mvement and f living as part f his church. The kingdm f Gd is ften called an already-nt-yet kingdm. Thelgians wuld call this cncept partially realized eschatlgy, but the phrase already-nt-yet seems t be a better ne fr us. This cncept implies that the kingdm f Gd is here, and is a kingdm that will still cme in a fullness that we d nt currently experience. In Matthew 4:23 Jesus begins his public 2

ministry saying, Repent fr the kingdm f heaven is at hand. It is nt a kingdm that we nly wait fr in the future, but it is a kingdm that is being realized all arund us, in ur lives, in ur hmes, in ur wrkplaces, and in Creatin. If we pen ur eyes, we can see the wnder and jy f his kingdm all arund us. We can see the kingdm as peple are transfrmed, as relatinships are healed, and as we jin Gd in his wrk f restring a brken wrld. We can see it in the wnder f a well-crafted building and in the beauty f a brilliantly painted canvas. The kingdm f Gd is springing up all arund us. The kingdm is already here! The kingdm f Gd is als a future reality. We read specifically in Revelatin 21 that there will be a new heaven and a new earth and that Gd will dwell with his Creatin and men and wmen with Gd. We hld fast t the prmise in Revelatin 21:4 that He will wipe away every tear frm their eyes, and death shall be n mre, neither shall there be murning, nr crying, nr pain anymre, fr the frmer things have passed away. S we live everyday experiencing the difficult and painful reality that althugh the kingdm is nw, it is als nt yet. We experience this as we interact with the cnsequences f sin, feel the pain f sickness and death, the heartbreak f brken relatinships, and the til f wrk. S hw can we live in this already-nt-yet kingdm f Gd? What des this kingdm lk like? What are its values? Hw can we reflect it? Hw can we experience the kingdm nw? What d we d as we wait fr the kingdm t fully cme? In the Gspel f Matthew there is a key Biblical text fr studying the kingdm f Gd. As nted befre, Matthew recrds that Jesus began his public ministry with the declaratin, Repent, fr the kingdm f heaven is at hand. Then Jesus began walking arund the regin f Galilee, calling his first disciples and prclaiming the gspel f the kingdm (4:23). Matthew makes it clear frm the beginning f his Gspel that Jesus is the king that many have been waiting fr, and that as the ultimate and ne true king, Jesus is ushering in a new kingdm. Jesus is initiating a kingdm that is unlike any ther kingdm, and frankly unlike any kingdm that anyne was anticipating. The kingdm f Gd is unexpected, all-encmpassing, and pen t all wh believe. The first recrded teaching we find in the Gspel f Matthew utlines the values f this new kingdm. Schlars label it the First f Five Discurses in Matthew s Gspel, and we knw it mre cmmnly as the Sermn n the Munt. This is where we will begin ur study n the kingdm f Gd. After we study the Sermn n the Munt and embrace the values and principles f Jesus kingdm, we will spend the Advent seasn lking at hw Matthew clearly defines Jesus as the lng awaited king. We will see hw Jesus is the fulfillment f the Old Testament prphets assurance f a servant king wh wuld rule all. As the New Year begins, we will get practical as we study the bk f Prverbs and the kingdm wisdm it ffers us fr ur everyday lives. During the seasn f Lent we will return t Matthew and study the kingdm parables as we 3

cnsider what it lks like t live in this already-nt-yet kingdm f Gd. These kingdm parables teach us t be citizens in the kingdm and allw fr us t reflect upn hw ur lives can be mre cmpletely surrendered t a king that lves us s much that he died fr us. Lent leads t Easter as we celebrate King Jesus and his wrk that saves us. After Easter we will ask urselves hw we can partner with Gd and with each ther t be kingdm builders. Kingdm partnership is a part f everyday living, s we will lk t Scripture t see hw we can reflect and build Gd s kingdm at hme, wrk, church, in relatinships, and with ur witness. We desire t see ur whle Chapel family engage in the wrk f establishing Gd s kingdm in ur lives. In summary, ur prayer is that frm 2017 t June we will each understand the kingdm f Gd, hw it is lived ut, and hw we can reflect it in every aspect f ur lives. Origins f the Fcus: The disciple-making missin f the Chapel has remained the same fr ver frty years. It is the missin that Jesus gave the church when he cmmanded us in Matthew 28:19-20 t g and make disciples f all natins. In studying the Great Cmmissin, as theses verses are s ften called, ne discvers that the cmmand f Jesus, the imperative, is t MAKE DISCIPLES. Smetimes we get caught up n the first wrd, g, but the clear cmmand f Jesus is nt in the ging, but in the making. Jesus cmmands his fllwers t make disciples. What d yu feel when yu hear this cmmand? Ill-equipped? Unprepared? Unsettled? Excited? Mtivated? Ready? Jesus cmmand is clear. If we were t write these verses in a way that accentuates the grammatical structure f this cmmand, we may translate it mre like, As yu are ging, MAKE disciples! Or even As yu are jurneying thrugh life, MAKE disciples! In ther wrds we culd write this phrase as yu are ging many ways, depending n the jurney we are n As yu are ging As yu are parenting As yu are wrking As yu are playing As yu are vacatining As yu are teaching As yu are serving As yu are building relatinships As yu are praying As yu are creating As yu are living As yu are ding all these things, MAKE DISCIPLES! Are yu currently making any disciples? The Great Cmmissin implies a level f intentinality t hw we g abut ur everyday living. We might even say, it cmmands a level f intentinality t hw we g abut making disciples in ur everyday living. 4

This as we are ging apprach t discipleship making asserts that all f life is a chance t express ur kingdm living. That in all aspects f ur lives, as we seek t live n missin t make disciples, we are invited t live ut kingdm values, speak kingdm truth, and build kingdm realities int the wrld arund us. We cannt separate ur lives int kingdm and nn-kingdm realities. We can t live in tw different kingdms, we can t serve tw different kings. N, we must surrender t the ne true king, and live the values and principles f his kingdm. We dn t enter Jesus kingdm n Sunday mrnings and then g back t ur ther kingdm life during the week. Fllwing Jesus, and beying the cmmand t make disciples, means that kingdm living is smething that takes place in ur hmes, in ur wrkplace, in ur schls, in ur neighbrhds, and at church. In Matthew 13:44 Jesus says, The kingdm f heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man fund and cvered up. Then in his jy he ges and sells all that he has and buys the field. The kingdm mves us t surrender. The kingdm mves us t jy. The kingdm f heaven mves us t live a life that invlves disciple making and kingdm living wherever ur jurney takes us. This past year we intrduced many new cncepts t ur staff team and the cngregatin. New paradigm shifts were geared t help us mbilize the bdy t fulfill the missin f making disciples. These paradigm shifts caused us t begin t rethink hw we are making disciples and hw we are mre fully reflecting the kingdm f Gd. The paradigm shifts were and cntinue t be as fllws. 1. Glfing Buddies vs. Ftball Team 2. Autnmy vs. Partnership 3. Building the Church vs. Building the Kingdm 4. Slavery vs. Sabbath 5. Cnverts vs. Disciples 6. Behaviral Mdificatin vs. Jesus Transfrmatin 7. Divisin vs. Unity 8. (Fr the Chapel cre) Cnsumers vs. Creatrs 9. (Fr the Chapel staff team) Ders f Tasks vs. Leaders f Leaders These paradigm shifts are taking rt at the Chapel as we engage in the missin t make disciples and expand the kingdm f Gd here in Williamsburg and arund the wrld. Yet questins remain, and it is ur hpe that as we study the Kingdm we will all learn t use ur lives t becme kingdm builders and disciple makers. That we will see each aspect f ur lives as a chance t express ur kingdm values and surrender t the true king. Pastral Perspective n the Fcus: 5

As we cnsider the kingdm f Gd tgether this year, it is imprtant fr each f us t cnsider a few cncepts that may help us in ur quest t make disciples and t be kingdm builders. It is always pssible that we becme t fcused n prgrams r structures, and in ding s lse sight f the beauty f Gd transfrmatinal wrk that is happening all arund us. We hpe these cncepts will impact ur kingdm building ptential. 1. But if it is really true that I am a sinner saved by sheer grace at Gd s infinite cst then there s nthing he cannt ask f me Tim Keller Our salvatin is cmpletely dependent n Jesus and what he has dne fr us. This truth leads us t surrender ur lives t the Gd wh lves us s much that he died fr us. This is the beginning f kingdm living as we surrender t ur glrius king. (Ephesians 2:8-9, Rmans 12:1-2) 2. Remember the signs and believe the signs. - C.S. Lewis As we seek t live kingdm values and build kingdm realities int ur lives, we need t keep ur eyes pen t hw Jesus is leading and t what he is ding arund us. Jesus will lead us t build his kingdm in ur lives, s let us remember t keep ur eyes and hearts pen t hw he desires us t mve in ur wrld. (Ephesians 1:18, Psalm 119:17) 3. Celebrate what yu want t replicate. - Suzy Sylvester As parents, we celebrate, encurage, and praise mments f character, hnesty, and service with ur children, believing that they will be mre inclined t act this way in the future if we acknwledge it nw. The same ges fr ur lives and the life f ur church family. As we cnsider hw we may all engage in kingdm building, let us celebrate and encurage thse arund us as we see thers becme kingdm builders. (1 Thessalnians 5:11) 4. First take the lg ut f yur wn eye. - Jesus As we are challenged t surrender t Jesus and t live ut his kingdm in this wrld, we are challenged as well t make sure that we reflect upn ur wn actins befre we judge the wrld arund us. A thrugh evaluatin f ur wn lives will undubtedly reveal ways in which we need t repent and surrender. We must humbly acknwledge ur wn shrtcmings and blind spts as we are called t help thers d the same. (Matthew 7:1-5) 5. Yu have t create space in yur life where nly Gd can meet yu, where nly Gd can shw up. Danielle Strickland Acknwledging that we are nt Gd, and that we desperately need him, requires the curage t intentinally find quiet rest and the time t listen, even as the 6

Hly Spirit leads us int places where we are increasingly dependent n him. (Judges 6: 11-24) Annual Fcus Sermn Series Overview Series 1 Kingdm Values Series Dates 9/17 11/19 (10 Weeks) Descriptin: In Matthew chapter fur, Jesus begins his public ministry with the phrase, Repent fr the kingdm f heaven is at hand. In Acts chapter 1, we read that after his resurrectin, Jesus spent frty days with his disciples teaching them abut the kingdm f Gd. Later, as the Bk f Acts cncludes, Paul, under huse arrest is prclaiming the kingdm f Gd with bldness and withut hindrance t all wh wuld cme t hear. Clearly, the kingdm f Gd is imprtant fr us t understand as fllwers f Jesus Christ. It is a central theme in Scripture and certainly a central theme in Jesus teaching. This fall, we will be studying Jesus first teaching n the kingdm f Gd. It is a sectin f Scripture we call the Sermn n the Munt. In this passage f Scripture Jesus describes a kingdm that stands in cntrast t the wrld. A kingdm unlike any ther. It is a kingdm in which its citizens, the fllwers f Jesus Christ, live a life marked by a new set f values and behavirs. The Sermn n the Munt describes what human life and human cmmunity lk like when they cme under the gracius rule f their true king, Jesus Christ. It describes a new value-system, ethical standard, religius devtin, attitude tward mney, ambitin, life-style, and netwrk f relatinships. It describes ur life as fllwers f Jesus. The kingdm f Gd stands in stark cntrast t the value system that we see in the wrld arund us and even in ur wn lives. As we study the Sermn n the Munt we will be asked t examine urselves t see hw we are living in and reflecting these kingdm values. If we allw this teaching f Jesus t lead us, we will discver a greater dependency n him and a greater freedm frm the wrld. Ultimately, Jesus teaches that life in his kingdm, with his kingdm values, is abundant life. Scriptural Basis: The Sermn n the Munt Series 2 Kingdm Cme - Advent 7

Series Dates 12/3 12/31 (5 Weeks) Descriptin: The Gspel writers make it clear that Jesus is the prmised king f the Old Testament. Matthew in particular, writing t a primarily Jewish audience, makes it clear that Jesus Christ is the prmised king, the fulfillment f the Old Testament prphets. In Jesus day, there were many different ideas f hw this prmised king wuld cme and what this king wuld be like, but Matthew makes it clear that the ultimate and perfect fulfillment f these prmises is Jesus. Embedded in these first chapters f Matthew are many Old Testament prphecies. The narrative f Jesus s birth and even his genealgy are written t explicitly annunce the fulfillment f these prphecies and t leave n dubts that Jesus is indeed the Messiah, ur prmised Savir and King. Tgether, in the seasn f Advent, we will see hw Jesus is nt nly the prmised fulfillment f Old Testament prphesy, but hw he is ur pwerful, preeminent, and prevailing king tday. Studying the narrative f Jesus s birth we will see hw Matthew invites us t make Jesus ur king, ur nly king. Will yu surrender t this king? If Jesus is indeed the prmised king, the sn f the Mst High Gd and ur nly hpe fr salvatin, then he demands ur cmplete surrender. Scriptural Basis: Gspel f Matthew Series 3 Kingdm Wisdm Series Dates 1/7 2/11 (6 Weeks) Descriptin: The quest fr wisdm is as ld as time. Yet Scripture tells us that true wisdm can nly be given frm ur Creatr wh spke the wrld int existence and breathed his Spirit int ur suls. As the New Year begins, we will lk t the giver f wisdm as we study the bk f Prverbs. Here we will discver practical and everyday wisdm fr ur hmes, relatinships, wrkplaces, and daily lives. As citizens f the kingdm f Gd, ur wisdm lks different than the wisdm taught in the wrld arund us. Tgether, as we dive int Prverbs, we will be challenged t live ur lives in a way that reflects the values and wisdm f the kingdm f Gd. Scriptural Basis: Prverbs Series 4 Kingdm Stries 8

Series Dates 2/14 4/1 (9 Weeks) Descriptin: The kingdm f Gd is ften called an already-nt-yet kingdm. Thelgians wuld call this cncept partially realized eschatlgy, but the phrase already-nt-yet seems t be a better ne fr us. This cncept means that the kingdm f Gd is already here, even as we wait fr it t cme in a fullness that we d nt currently experience. We can see the kingdm f Gd present in ur lives as we witness peple transfrmed, as relatinships are healed, and as we jin Gd in his wrk f restring a brken wrld. We als experience the ften painful reality that the kingdm is nt yet. We experience the nt yet cmpnent f his kingdm as we interact with the cnsequences f sin and the reality f a fallen wrld. We experience it in sickness and in death, and we experience it as we struggle with sin and with brken relatinships. S hw can we live in this already and nt yet kingdm? During the seasn f Lent we will seek t answer this questin as we study the kingdm parables fund in the Bk f Matthew. These kingdm stries will teach us t live in the tensin f the already-nt-yet kingdm f Gd. Thrugh these stries we are challenged t live jyusly and generusly as we fully immerse urselves in the kingdm. Theses parables will als teach us t live expectantly and alertly as we await ur king s return. In all, these parables will rient ur hearts and minds nt nly twards Gd s kingdm, but ultimately t the king himself. Scriptural Basis: Parables in Matthew Series 5 Kingdm Missin Series Dates 4/8 6/10 (10 Weeks) Descriptin: The disciple-making missin f the Chapel has remained the same fr ver frty years. Are yu currently in any intentinal disciple making relatinships? Are yu intentinally reflecting the kingdm f Gd in yur life and with yur wrk? In this series we will lk at the varius ways we can partner with Gd t make disciples in every aspect f ur lives. As parents, grandparents, children, bsses, emplyees, neighbrs, friends, c-wrkers, and 9

cngregants we are all called t use the places and relatinships in which Gd has planted us t intentinally partner with him in revealing his kingdm t the wrld. Jesus prmises that as we are ging he will guide us, strengthen us, equip us, and empwer us t be disciple makers. He als prmises us that when we surrender fully t him and his kingdm we will find remarkable peace and jy as we partner with him. Our hpe is that as we cnclude ur annual fcus n the kingdm f Gd, this series will equip us t practically live ut the calling t be make disciples and reflect Gd s kingdm wherever he has placed us. Scriptural Basis: Biblical texts dealing with varius ways in which we partner with Gd t reflect His kingdm and make disciples in and with ur lives. Series 6 Summer Bible Study Series Dates 6/17 9/2 ( 12 Weeks) Descriptin: In the summer we will shift t ur Summer Bible Study Series.
