ANNOUNCEMENTS: March 13, 1983 GREETING /VISITORS We greet the visitors in the congregation this morning pleased to have you with us and we do hope that the opportunity will be ours to greet you in a more personal way following the service before you depart - either at the door, or - time permitting - downstairs in the Russell Room where tea and coffee will be served. Be free in the sharing of your name with us. Take a moment -perhaps right now -to fill out one of the visitor cards or sign one of the Guest Books in the narthex when you leave. Join us on other Sundays in our worship, our fellowship, our programs of service to others. You worship in a Church whose roots are deep in the soil of this part of New York City, a Church that has been a beacon of God's light and love to thousands of people who have passed through our doors since the year the Church was founded, back in 1837. We minister here in the name of Christ and it is in His strong name that we bid you welcome on this the Fourth Sunday of Lent. ANNIVERSARY SUNDAY It was on March loth 146 years ago that our Church was incorporated. And thus began an amazing ministry in this place. We cherish the heritage of faith that is our. Indeed, God has been good to us~ 1rle celebrate the present and we rejoice in all the good things around our Church at this time. We embrace the future with great nope and confidence, believing that God has even greater things ahead for this Church and this congregation1 This is the one Sunday in the year when we "lift up" briefly the l)oth Anniversary Endowment Fund of the Church. Our Trustees are looking ahead. And wouldn't it be wonderful, if - when we come together four years from now to celebrate our l)oth birthday - if we could have a $1.50,000 Endowment Fund to help us meet the challenges of the future. (undergirding us ) 'ltle're "sewing" seeds today in connection with this. Special gifts to the Endowment are always welcome. And we hope that you'll also be thinking of the Church in your 1iJ111. And those of you who are thinking of wills and legacies CONCERNS Be sure to pick up a copy of the monthly issue of "A Word In Edgeways" - our parish news sheet. Churches grow when its members share enthusiastically what they have found and wish to share it with others. Let's fill the Church next Sunday and have some people up in the balcony. _;..--... 2 TODAY AND NEXT SUNDAY Envelopes for the "One Great Hour of Sharing" united appeal are in the pe1rrs and we invite you to respond with a gift either today or next Sunday. We join with other Protestant Churches and also friends in the Catholic Church in the celebration of this "One Great Hour of Sharing" appeal. We commend it to you. As a congregation, we usually respond with around $300.00. The envelopes will be in the pews next Sunday as well. TODAY'S PREACHER The sermon today will be brought by our Lay Leader, William Proctor - a gifted writer and speaker. A few facts regarding Bill are in the bulletin. A native of Georgia, reared in Texas, schooled at Havard (Harvard College and Harvard Law School), a former Marine, having served in Vietnam in the late sixties following which Bill came to NYC as Legal Reporter for the Dai!v News at which time he and his wife, Pam, lived over here on East 8lst Street (I think it was 440). Father of 3 year old, Michael, and also author of close to 15 books, many of them dealing w.i th religious concerns and themes. Their first Sunday with us was Palm Sunday, March 22, 1970. 13 years ago next week. I remember calling on them in their apartment in April of 1970. I doubt if they remember it as so many young couples who come to the city, they weren't sure how long they'd be around they joined the Church here in November of 1971. but they went ahead and they joined Their involvement in the Church has been significant. Bill has been our Lay Leader for 5 years and was our Associate Lay Leader for a number of years ( Tr1 before that. He has been teacher of our Adult Bible Class since 1975-8 years. Pam, it was, who sparked the idea of our Lay l?eader program as well as initiating the Vietnamese Refugee Committee in our Church which later evolved into the IndochineseFriends Committee. That began in 1975 with the coming of Vietnamese refugees into our lives and has continued down to the present. Now the time has come for them to move on. No longer living in the East eighties, but now in the East twenties, they are looking for a church home in their neighborhood where they will be able to walk to Church, where the travel distance between church and home will be less. As a believer in the neighborhood parish concept, I appreciate their decision and the tug in that dir1 1rJe shall certainly miss them. They leave behind a legacy of amazing "good v.rorks", of light and love generously, prayerfully and thoughtfully shared with so many. Many of us have drav.rn fni th from Bill and Pam...,, :And so.today~, we thank them for passing through this way and being a part of our lives for 13 years, March of 1970 - March of 1983. We 1 re going to keep in touch with them and invite them back and hope they will come many times in the years ahead. This is a difficult moment an emotional one for many of us, and we say, "Thank you and God bless you" for your many good works and the generous giving of yourselves to this church. He have our rituals, our celebrations, our birthdays and our anniversaries, our festivals and our good times together. We remember YOU, Lord, as the ONE who one day long ago turned water into wine. Bring new richness and deep joy into our worship and our fellowship on this special day of celebration. GUIDE US, 0 GOD, in finding ways to cherish our heritage, to appreciate and to rejo~ce in our past, to enjoy the present, to anticipate and to embrace the future with faith and hope. LORD, we sometimes forget about those who have lived before us. We sometimes forget about the many good works of those who have prayed here in these pews in other years, and sung hymns of joy before some of us were even born. We sometimes make the mistake of assuming that everything begins with us. 1t.fe drink from wells we did not dig. We eat food from farmlands which we did not develop. iwectide subways we did not build and worship in Churches we did not erect. 1rle enjoy freedoms we did not earn. Make us grateful for the heritage of faith that is ours. Help us to feel our oneness with those of other days who once worshipped here, as well as our oneness with those near us in the pews this hour. LORD, we look ahead with joy and enthusiasm and deep faith to the continuing tasks of Kingdom building in this Church. As we approach the!50th anniversary of the founding of this Church, we are grateful for the many blessings that God has given us across the years and look forward to future years of fruitful service in Christ's name in this city and community.
