UNIT 1, SESSION 1 Four Friends Helped MARK 2:1-12 When Jesus came to the town, many people came to Him. So many people came that there was no more room in the house where He stayed. Four men brought their friend to Jesus. Since this friend could not walk, they carried him on a mat. The men could not get close to Jesus because of the crowd. They went onto the roof. They took off part of the roof. Then they lowered their friend to Jesus. Jesus knew the men had faith in Him. He told the man, Your sins are forgiven. Some of the religious teachers there did not believe that Jesus had the power to forgive sins. Right away, Jesus knew what they were thinking. Jesus asked the religious teachers which was easier: to forgive sins or to heal? Jesus said to the man who could not walk, Get up! Take your mat and go home. The man got up right away. He picked up his mat and left. Everyone saw him. They were amazed! Bible Stories for Kids Bible Studies For Life 1st & 2nd Grade, Spring 2019 2018 LifeWay. Published in the United States of America. UNIT 1, SESSION 2 The Good Samaritan LUKE 10:25-37 An expert in the law asked Jesus, How can I have eternal life? What does the Law say? Jesus asked. The man answered that people should love God with all they have and love their neighbor as themselves. The man then asked, Who is my neighbor? Jesus told this story. A man was going from Jerusalem to Jericho. Robbers attacked him. They beat him up. They took his money. They left him at the side of the road. A priest walked by. He saw the man. He moved to the other side of the road and kept walking. Later, a Levite (temple helper) walked by. He saw the man. He moved to the other side of the road and kept walking. Next, a Samaritan walked by. He saw the injured man and felt sorry for him. The Samaritan man cared for the man s wounds. He put the hurt man on his donkey and took him to an inn. The next morning, the Samaritan paid the innkeeper to take care of the man. He promised to bring the innkeeper more money to take care of the man if it was needed. Jesus asked the expert in the law, Which of these three was a neighbor to the hurt man? The law expert said, The one who helped him. Jesus answered, Go and do the same.

UNIT 1, SESSION 3 Mary and Martha LUKE 10:38-42 Jesus was traveling and entered a village where some of his friends lived. Martha welcomed Jesus into her home. Martha had a sister named Mary. Mary sat down near Jesus feet. She listened carefully to Jesus words. Martha was upset. She had a lot of work to do to take care of her guest. Martha came to Jesus. She said, Don t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work? Tell her to come help me. Jesus said, Martha, Martha. You are worried about many things. Only one thing is really needed. Mary has chosen the right thing to do. I will not take it away from her.

UNIT 1, SESSION 4 Jesus and Zacchaeus LUKE 19:1-10 Jesus was passing through Jericho. A tax collector named Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus. Zacchaeus could not see over the crowd because he was short. He decided to run ahead of the crowd. He climbed up a tree so he could better see Jesus as He came by. Jesus was about to pass the tree where Zacchaeus was. Jesus stopped. He looked up. Jesus said, Zacchaeus, hurry up and get out of the tree. Today I must stay at your house. Zacchaeus hurried down. He welcomed Jesus happily. The people who watched complained. Jesus is going home with a sinful man! Zacchaeus said to Jesus, I will give half of all I have to those who are poor. If I have cheated anyone, I will give him back more than I took from him. Jesus told the people, I have come to look for and to save those who are lost.

UNIT 1, SESSION 5 The Woman at the Well JOHN 4:1-30 Jesus needed to cross Samaria on His way to Jerusalem. He came to a well. He was very tired and sat down near the well. Soon a woman of Samaria came to get water. Jesus said, Will you give me a drink? The woman was surprised that a Jewish man would speak to her. She knew that Jews did not like to be with Samaritans. Jesus told the woman that He could give her living water! You don t have a bucket, the woman said. Are You greater than Jacob who gave us this well? Jesus explained that people get thirsty again from regular water. He could give her something that would keep her from being thirsty. He did not mean water to drink. Jesus meant He could give her eternal life. Jesus and the woman talked about worship. The woman said, I know that the Messiah will come. He will explain everything. Jesus answered, I am He. The One speaking to you is the Messiah. Jesus disciples came back from town. The woman hurried to the town to tell others about the good news. She left so fast, she forgot her water pot. The people left the town to find Jesus and listen to Him.

UNIT 2, SESSION 1 Jesus Washed the Disciples Feet JOHN 13:1-7,14-15 Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to go to God. He and His disciples were at supper. The devil had put in Judas mind to tell the soldiers and chief priests where they could find Jesus. At supper, Jesus got up from the table. He took off his coat. He tied a towel around Him. Jesus poured water into a big bowl. Then Jesus began to wash the feet of the disciples. He dried them with the towel. The disciples were probably surprised. A servant usually had the job of washing feet. This time, no slave came. The disciples feet were dirty. Jesus washed the disciples feet. Peter said, I will never let you wash my feet! Jesus told Peter, You don t understand now. Later, you will understand. When He finished, Jesus sat back down. He said, If I, your Lord and your Teacher, washed your feet, you should wash the feet of one another. I have shown you an example. You should do as I have done for you.

UNIT 2, SESSION 2 The Triumphal Entry LUKE 19:28-40; JOHN 12:12-19 Go to the village. You will find a donkey colt. Bring it to Me. If anyone asks what you are doing, tell him the Lord needs it, Jesus said to two of His disciples. The disciples found the colt just as Jesus said. Someone asked why they were untying the colt. The disciples answered, The Lord needs it. The disciples took the colt to Jesus. They put their robes on the colt. They helped Jesus get on it. Jesus rode into Jerusalem. The people spread their robes on the road in front of Him. Many people thanked God and praised Him for the great things Jesus had done. The people shouted, God bless the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Others shouted, Hosanna, blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Some of the temple leaders said, Teacher, make Your disciples be quiet! Jesus answered that if His followers were quiet, the stones would praise Him. The disciples did not understand what was happening. Later, they remembered that the Scriptures had told what would happen. They remembered how they praised Jesus.

UNIT 2, SESSION 3 Crucifixion and Resurrection MATTHEW 26:36 28:10 The soldiers grabbed Jesus and arrested Him. Later, they put a robe on Him. They put a crown of thorns on His head. The soldiers spit on Him. They hit Him. They laughed at Him. They pretended to worship Him. Then the soldiers took Jesus out to a hill. They nailed Him onto a cross. People who watched made fun of Jesus. Then Jesus died on that cross. A rich man took Jesus body and wrapped Him in cloth. The man put Jesus body in a tomb that had never been used. The man rolled the stone over the door. Three days later, some women went to the tomb. Suddenly, a huge earthquake shook the ground. An angel rolled back the stone. The women were afraid. The angel said, Don t be afraid. You are looking for Jesus, but He isn t here! He has been raised from the dead like He told you. The angel told the women to tell the disciples what had happened. As the women left, Jesus came to them. The women fell down. They worshiped Jesus. Don t be afraid, Jesus said. Tell the disciples to meet Me in Galilee.

UNIT 2, SESSION 4 Thomas Believed JOHN 20:19-31 The disciples met in a locked room. They were afraid. They thought the same people who killed Jesus might come for them. Suddenly, Jesus was in the locked room with them! Jesus greeted them. He showed them His hands. He showed His sides. The disciples knew that this was really Jesus! Jesus said, God sent Me to you. I am sending you to others. He taught them about forgiving other people. Since Thomas was not with the group, he did not see Jesus. When the other disciples told him they had seen Jesus, he did not believe them. Thomas said, If I don t see nail marks in His hands and feel His sides, I will not believe it is Jesus. Later, the disciples were back in the locked room. Thomas was there this time. Suddenly, Jesus was in the room. He told Thomas to feel of His hands and His side. He said, Be a believer. Thomas said, My Lord and my God! Jesus said that Thomas believed because he could see Jesus. Jesus then said that people who believe without seeing Him are especially blessed.

UNIT 3, SESSION 1 Jesus Taught About Prayer MATTHEW 5:1-2; 6:5-13 Great crowds of people were following Jesus as He traveled. When Jesus saw the people, He went up the mountain and sat down. Jesus disciples followed Him up the mountain. Jesus began to teach His disciples about prayer. Jesus said, When you pray, you should not pray in a way that will make people want to look at you. Do not stand up and pray where everyone can see you. Find a secret place and pray there. Jesus then said to His followers, When you pray you do not need to pray long prayers using a lot of words. God already knows what you are thinking. Jesus wanted to make sure that His disciples really understood how to pray so Jesus gave them an example. Jesus said, Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, Your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

UNIT 3, SESSION 2 Jesus Gave Thanks for Food JOHN 6:1-13 Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee. A huge crowd was following Him. People wanted to be close to Jesus because of the amazing miracles He had done. Jesus and His disciples went and sat down on the mountain. They saw the large crowd of people coming near them. Jesus knew they would need food. Jesus looked at Philip and asked, Where are we to buy bread to feed all of these people? Jesus was testing Philip when He asked this question. Jesus already knew how He was going to feed the people. Philip told Jesus that even if they had two hundred days worth of pay, it still would not be enough to feed all of the people. Then Andrew came to Jesus and said, There is a small boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. Then he asked, How can this help feed so many people. Jesus told all of the people to sit down. There were about five thousand men, plus women and children who all set on the grass around Jesus. Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks for them. Jesus passed the loaves to the people. Then, Jesus took the fish, offered thanks for them, and gave them to all the people sitting around, as much as they wanted. When everyone was finished eating, Jesus told His disciples to gather the leftover food. They gathered twelve baskets of food.

UNIT 3, SESSION 3 Jesus Prayed in the Garden LUKE 22:39-46 When Jesus and His disciples finished celebrating Passover, they went to the garden of Gethsemane to pray. When Jesus and His disciples arrived at the place, He told them to pray that they would not be tempted. Jesus then went ahead a little farther and began to pray. Jesus knelt down and talked to God. He asked God to take the burden of dying on the cross away from Him if it was God s will, but Jesus told God He would do whatever He wanted Him to do. At this point, an angel came down from heaven and began to give Him strength. Jesus knew that dying on the cross was going to be very hard. Jesus prayed and prayed asking God to help Him. When Jesus rose from prayer, He saw His disciples sleeping because they were so sad. Jesus woke them up and asked, Why are you sleeping? Jesus told them once again. Pray so that you will not be tempted.

UNIT 3, SESSION 4 The Holy Spirit Helps Us Pray ROMANS 8:18-30 Paul wrote Romans to the church in Rome, but it is also important for us today. We live in a world filled with suffering. Things are not always easy and we experience pain and hard times, but we have hope knowing Jesus will come again. Creation is waiting for Jesus to come back to make all things right. Even more so, God s people cannot wait for Jesus to come again and for all things to be made perfect. While we are waiting for Jesus to come back, we have a helper. The helper is the Holy Spirit. One of the ways He helps us is to pray and talk to God. When we do not know the words to say, the Holy Spirit helps us talk to God. The Holy Spirit prays that all things will work out for our good according to the will of God.
