Vol 141 Feb2016 No.2/12 UPON THE SQUARE From the Worshipful Master Robert Davidson, PM 727-557-6864 master@starlodge78.com From the East, As we approach President s Day this month, it makes us proud of the men who served our country as its top leaders were also members of the fraternity. Those Presidents that served were George Washington, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, James Polk, James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, James Garfield, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Howard Taft, Warren Harding, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Gerald Ford. During my research I was surprised to find that Abraham Lincoln was not a mason. He did apply for membership in Tyrian Lodge, Springfield, Ill., shortly after his nomination for the presidency in 1860 but withdrew the application because he felt that his applying for membership at that time might be construed as a political ruse to obtain votes. He advised the lodge that he would resubmit his application again when he returned from the presidency. Lincoln never returned. On the death of the president, Tyrian Lodge adopted, on April 17, 1865, a resolution to say "that the decision of President Lincoln to postpone his application for the honors of Freemasonry, lest his motives be misconstrued, is the highest degree honorable to his memory." Have you visited our website or Facebook? Our Junior Warden, Tim Clark, has been at work to update our social media presence. Your have all agreed to move forward and quickly to make sure that Star Lodge is functioning in the new electronic age. Social media is so important to the younger generation for events and communications. It is important that we keep up to date with a current page. We old timers may not care much about all of this social media stuff but this is how to communicate with the new generations and potentially draw them for membership. Those lodges that continually use social media are the ones that are growing. Time for us to get with it! In closing, please notice the Secretary s announcement concerning the Trestleboard. We have been collecting email addresses since last year but are far from having a majority of the membership. Also, we have scheduled several social events as well as a fund raiser for this month and hope that many of you will be able to come and enjoy the fellowship with your Brothers and families. See you in Lodge! Fraternally and Sincerely, Bob Davidson, PM, WM

Greetings from the West, This year holds a promise of great progress in bringing our Lodge to an increased state of repair. We all want a Lodge that we can take pride in and this year's goal is to make it so. So, mark your calendars, there will be a work party on Saturday, March 5 from 9:00 to noon. Coffee and snacks will be provided. There are two main areas of concern for this party. First, weather permitting, we will attend to the shrubs, vines and weeds on the north side of the building. We will apply a power washer to the exterior in preparation for a future painting. Secondly, and possibly dictated by the weather, we will have a general "spruce up" of the Fellowship Hall. We will be taping and painting the white trim inside and, very possibly in the Lodge room as well. There are many Brothers with home repair and handyman skills out there, and YOUR help is needed. Please remember that it's YOUR Lodge. WE all want to be proud of it. See you there. Fraternally and Sincerely, Jim Charrette, SW Greetings from the South, We're off to a fantastic start this year. We've a number of events already on the calendar with a lot of firsts for the year! The first event is the District Deputy Grand Master s visit on the 1 st of February. Dinner will be served at 6:30pm followed by our meeting with drinks and snacks provided after. Our first Star Lodge Pancake Breakfast of the year is the 6 th of February! We've heard your comments and are expanding the menu. We'll be offering eggs to order as well as two new additions, grits and toast. It'll sure make for a hearty stick to your ribs breakfast, so come and see us on the 6 th. Our first degree night of the year will be on the 22 nd. Dinner will be served at 6:30pm followed by our meeting with drinks and snacks provided after. Come show your support by being a part of advancing Brother Ogburn to the degree of Fellow Craft! Another great get together will be our first Pot Luck Dinner of the year on the 5 th Monday, the 29 th. Dinner starts at 6:00pm and we'll also be showing a movie starting at 7:00pm. The night is sure to be some good eats, entertainment and great fellowship. I've only heard from a couple of you regarding ideas. I'd really like to hear from more of you. As the Senior Warden stated,...it's YOUR Lodge. I really want to put together fund raisers as well as meal nights that you're interested in. Let me hear from you Brothers! By the Plumb, Tim Clark, JW
