September 7, 2014 From the Pastor s Desk Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time MINISTRIES: We have various ministries that are needed for the celebration of Mass. Please give some thought as to how you may serve. In alphabetical order we need: 1) Altar Servers These can be children in fourth grade or above or adults willing to serve for at least one Mass a month. Adults could just come to the Offertory Table during the creed and then return to their seat when the prayer Pray my brothers & sisters is prayed. 2) Eucharistic Ministers These should be at least 18 years old and willing to serve twice a month. They distribute the sacred hosts or present the cup for the distribution of Holy Communion. They should also receive under both species. 3) Lectors They read the first and second readings and the prayers of the faithful if the deacon is not present. They also process in with the Book of the Gospels when no deacon is present. 4) Ushers They are entrusted with welcoming people, taking up the collection and assisting someone if an episode of some sort takes place. Anyone who serves in these ministries must be a good, practicing Catholic able to receive the Eucharist. If over the age of 18, they must complete and comply with the Protecting God s Children rules and regulations. We will connect you with Rose Morgan who is the Administrator of this program for Good Shepherd Parish. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ EAST CATHOLIC: I attended the opening School Mass at East Catholic last Friday. It s always so good to look out and see our children praying and singing the Lord s praises. Some of our eighth graders did a great job in leading the singing -- kindly pray for our children daily. SCHEDULE CHANGE: Deacon Joe will be on Retreat next weekend. So he will give the homily on Saturday and Sunday, September 20th and 21st. I will do the Anointing though as usual next weekend. Pray for Deacon Joe next weekend as he Retreats. MAGNIFICAT: The Magnificat is a monthly devotional prayer aid which contains daily Mass prayers, plus daily morning and evening prayers and daily spiritual readings. I can order you a copy beginning with the December issue. Right now I have copies as you enter for daily mass. The cost $4.00 a month for the regular size and $5.00 a month for the large print. If you want me to order you a copy I can get a bulk rate and you just pay each month as you pick up your copy. I need to know by the end of September if you want to place an order. So tell me or give me a call. This is an example from the September, 2014 Magnificat of a spiritual writing. A SAINT WHO WAS A MANUAL LABORER Saint Hunna of Alsace (Feast: April 15) (+ c.679) Hunna or Huva, was the daughter of a duke who ruled in Alsace, the French region that today lies on the border with Germany. She was given in marriage to the noble Huno of Hunnaweyer, and bore him one son, Deodatus, who was named for the saintly Bishop of Nevers. When he grew up, Deodatus entered the monastery of Eberheimmunster that the Bishop himself had founded. Hunna s husband was frequently occupied with political affairs, and Hunna was left to manage his estate. She gave generously to the Church, endowing at least one monastery. And she devoted herself to caring for poor peasants according to the words of Christ: Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me (Mt 25:40). She frequently visited the sick, bringing them food and carrying their laundry home to be washed and mended. The figure of the noblewoman Hunna wending her way through the streets bearing the threadbare rags of the poor in her laundry basket moved many hearts in Strasbourg. They dubbed her the holy washwoman. After Hunna s death she was venerated as a saint in Alsace. She was canonized in 1520 at the request of Duke Ulric of Wurtemberg. Hunna is the patroness of laundresses. Peace and Love, Fr. Semler
