Duke University Chapel Service of Worship Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 18, 2011 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God A Villian is Accused, woodcut, unknown artist, 1593. We are delighted to welcome former Dean of Duke Chapel, Bishop Will Willimon, as our preacher today. Our gospel reading comes in four scenes. In scene one, we have a very wealthy man and a manager who is very wealthy too. In scene two the rich man hears that the manager is squandering the property and straightaway fires him. But there is a moment of grace: the manager gets the chance to visit all the rich man s clients to settle up their accounts. In scene three, the manager sets about writing off the debts of the rich man s major creditors. It s too late to make money, but it s not too late to build social capital. He starts making friends, people who will be pleased to see him even when he s out of a job. In scene four, the rich man congratulates the manager for making friends rather than extorting money, and realizing that generosity is the best investment.

The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word which comes from the Lord God and feeds our souls. Amen. Deuteronomy 8:3 Greeting and Announcements Processional Hymn 586 Let My People Seek Their Freedom ebenezer *Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance (in unison) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen. The minister speaks words of assurance. *Peace (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.) Proclamation Prayer for Illumination (in unison) Almighty God, you search us and know us: as we search and know you in the reading of your word, may we rely on you in strength and rest on you in weakness, now and in all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

People: And also with you. Minister: Let us pray. Prayers of the People (The congregation responds to each petition: Hear our prayer. Fecit potentiam in brachio suo, dispersit superbos mente cordis sui. Deposuit potentes de sede et exaltavit humiles. Esurientes implevit bonis, et divites dimisit inanes. Suscepit Israel puerum suum recordatus misericordiae suae, sicut locutus est ad patres nostros Abraham et semini eius in saecula. Magnificat anima mea Dominum. My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. For he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant; behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the

powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever. Luke 1:46-55 *Doxology lasst uns erfreuen Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Alleluia, Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Thanksgiving and Communion This morning we give thanks for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. We celebrate its mission to facilitate the development of well rounded, educated, productive, and ethical individuals who are well versed in technical as well as social, political, and environmental issues. The ushers bring a network card to the altar. In Durham, we lift up organizations that provide access to capital for first time homeowners and small businesses. The ushers bring forward a house key. *The Great Thanksgiving (Musical setting A, found on page 17 in the hymnal.) *The Lord s Prayer (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) Sharing of the Bread and Wine All those who have become members of Christ s body through baptism and seek to be united with God and at peace with their neighbor are invited to receive communion. Wine is used for communion. If you would prefer to receive grape juice, it is available upon request at the communion station near the main entrance of the Chapel, on the pulpit side. If you have a gluten allergy, those serving communion nearest to the Memorial Chapel will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine on request. You may also come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion.
