ANNOUNCEMENTS (Contact Andrea with questions or to help out.) Sacramental Preparation begins Monday December 10. Children need to make every effort to memorize their Act of Contrition before classes begin. Volunteers needed as Baptism Hosts to guide families through the Sacrament of Baptism * to ATHENS with St. Paul * Vacation Bible Camp Dates Monday July 8-Friday July 12 Old Testament THE ASSYRIANS TAKE OVER 2 Kings 17 King Ahaz of Judah (in the divided country, Israel was in the north and Judah was in the south) was looking for help against other local kings, so he went to the king of Assyria for military protection. He went to the city of Damascus and learned about their pagan worship. Ahaz came back to Judah and introduced some of these religious practices that involved worshiping nature gods instead of the one true God. At the same time in the northern country of Israel, King Hoshea also wanted protection from Assyria. It wasn t long before the kings of Assyria took over Israel. Many people were moved from Israel to Assyria, and people from Assyria took over the farms and houses of the people in exile. Many prophets warned the leaders, Give up your evil ways and keep my commandments. But the leaders and many of the people didn t listen. New Testament PETER DENIES KNOWING JESUS Mark 14: 26-31 and 66-72 Peter was a very loyal follower of Jesus. He was one of the first disciples Jesus chose when walking near the Sea of Galilee. Many times Jesus would choose Peter, James, and John for a special mission. Peter saw the Transfiguration when Jesus was talking to Moses and Elijah. Peter was nearby when Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane on Holy Thursday. So what happened? How did Peter become a person who would deny that he even knew Jesus? At the last super Jesus said Your faith in me shall be shaken But Peter thought that he could be steady. Even if I have to die with you he said. Jesus said, Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times. And that is just what happened. Peter became afraid. Three times he said he did not even know Jesus. The rooster crowed and reminded him that he had failed. He cried with a broken heart. MY FAITH Made in the Image of God If you look in the mirror, you will see someone who is made in the image of God. This person cannot be replaced. Nobody can do the things that God has called you to do. When we look at other people, we realize that they also are made in the image of God. We can never make fun of people who are different, or who have a different religion or come from a different country. No matter how small or how large how rich or how poor, God loves us and expects us to love each other. Alphabet Soup W is for Wisdom. It begins with great respect for the Lord. (Psalm 111) The wisdom of Jesus was amazing to people who heard him speak. (Luke 4: 36) PAGE 4

We welcome to our sister parish, St. Joseph in the village of Namalaka, a new Seminarian by the name of Evance Mtambo. He was a student at the minor seminary (the high school) when the pastor, Fr. Davie Mambo, was the rector there. And together they will be working with the Christians (parishioners) in the parish and out churches, to bring the word of God to fruition. We pray for him as he learns the ropes and gets to work with the people. We pray for the rains that have begun to fall as this is the beginning of the agricultural season. According to word in the news and on the ground this is the "hunger season" as the crop of last year was less than successful. Climate experts predict the seasonal rainfall for 2018-2019 will be erratic with a predicted rainfall that is normal to below normal. The area has been experiencing drought and episodes of heavy rain with flooding. This regional forecast comes at a time when food security in the region has been subpar this year due to lower harvest during the 2017-2018 agricultural season. Prayers are needed! SAINT BRENDAN CHURCH GIVING TREE Saint Brendan Parish Giving Tree is a yearly tradition that supports multiple different agencies throughout our community. Many of these agencies rely on the influx of donations they receive at this time of year. The giving trees are up in the church Narthex now with lots of tags for a variety of different needs. On top of the individual tags on the trees we are also collecting the following: New toys or teen gift items that can be used for Mathew House and Sibling House general Christmas stores (new only please); new or gently used blankets or sleeping bags for Noel House and Francis House; new and gently used Coats any size. These will be used for the Knights of Columbus coats for kids program, Youth Care and Union Gospel Mission and Francis House; new socks (adult). Please make sure gently used items are clean. Items can be dropped off in the church Narthex. School families may drop items at the school drop off box but if you have a larger donation it is helpful if you drop it in the Narthex. Please make sure tagged items come back with the tag attached. We are also still looking for delivery drivers. You would need to be available to pick up items at the church around noon on December 16th. Some deliveries would need to be made that day, others can be made later that week. ***We have a strong need for a driver to deliver a large donation to the King County Juvenile Detention Center on December 16th after distribution. If you have any questions, would like to be a driver, or are interested in taking on a leadership role please contact Sarah at sarahshines@hotmail.com. Jesus makes it clear that it matters not how much one gives, but that it is planned, calculated, at least somewhat sacrificial (see Luke 24:1-4), and not simply from what is leftover at the end of the month. We propose the tithe (10%) as the ideal every family can consider working towards. This means taking steps to give 5% to one s parish, and 5% to other charities or causes you have personal passion for. You can register online at www.saintbrendan.org and click on the link Online Registration/New Parishioner on lower left corner of website and to give online, click on the Online Giving link. It s quick, secure, convenient, and easy. Your support helps sustain our parish. If you need help with online giving, please call the Parish Office at 425-483-9400. PAGE 7
