Jeremiah 29:11 I have mixed feelings about this passage from Jeremiah. It is one of the most often quoted inspirational verses in scripture. A Christian swag staple, I ve seen it on posters, cards, stationary, bumper stickers, wall art, picture frames, t-shirts etc. And I get it. These are certainly words of comfort. They were spoken by the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Israel in the midst of the exile. God is communicating to God s chosen people that God has not abandoned them in their exile that even in the midst of their anguish and suffering and fear, God is with them, and more than that, God loves them and God s ultimate plan is a loving one. God s ultimate plan is good and so everything which is not good can t last forever. This is true. It was true for the people of Israel in their exile, and it is true for us today. However, saying that God s ultimate plan is for the good and thus anything not good cannot last, is very different than how this verse is often used, which is to say, everything that happens is part of God s good plan, so everything that happens is somehow good. No. Just, no. There are very NOT good things that happen in our lives, really horrible things. People get sick and don t get better. Accidents happen. Tragedies happen. These things and so many others are decidedly NOT good. But that doesn t mean God is any less faithful. And it doesn t mean that God s promise is any less true. God s ultimate plan is goodness, and so God s ultimate plan is full of hope for us, but it s a hope for a future not fully realized in our lifetime. It is hope for a future in the fullness of God s loving embrace, and in the meantime, we know God is always with us, even and especially when we re dealing with what is NOT good. What God reveals to us through the prophet Jeremiah is not that everything that happens will be good but that in God and through Christ we have hope for our future even and especially in the midst of what is NOT good. And that is very good indeed. May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, guide your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Blessings, Pastor Karen
