Palm Sunday Saint John Eudes March 29, 2015 Father Gérard s Corner The face of Isaiah s Suffering Servant, brutally disfigured by human cruelty, provides Christians with a cherished portrait of Jesus, described in Philippians as emptying himself, taking the form of a slave. If Lent s almsgiving, fasting, and prayer transformed our stony hearts, then we should now recognize, in countless contemporary faces, the suffering Christ who awaits our loving service. Of the four, Mark s Passion is most stark. Jesus disciples don t just desert, they flee, so dramatically that one even runs off naked, leaving behind a robe evocative of the baptism garment. No Good Thief declares Jesus innocence; no Sorrowful Mother, no Beloved Disciple stand faithfully by the cross, where Jesus hangs for six hours, instead of only three. The Father, who twice designated Jesus beloved Son, is silent when Jesus cried out in a loud voice the heart-rending question, Why have you forsaken me? Scholars theorize that Mark s community was severely tested by persecution from without, failure within. Though discipleship rarely demands our heroism, Christians throughout the world are not spared, nor are we strangers to personal and institutional failure. Thus, Mark s portrayal of disciples defection and Jesus abandonment should encourage us. Moreover, though Jesus seems locked into final failure, a stone rolled against the entrance of the tomb, Jesus silent Abba (and ours) immediately begins stirring hearts to new life. A Gentile centurion declares Jesus truly the Son of God. Joseph of Arimathea, distinguished representative of official Judaism, courageously takes custody of Jesus body. And we respond by professing our Creed: on the third day, [Jesus] rose again! J.S. Paluch Fr. Gérard PRAYER OF THE WEEK Saving God, draw us into this holiest of weeks by emptying us of ourselves and bringing us closer to Christ crucified, that we may rise with him in glory. Hear these our prayers and grant them through your Son and our eternal Lord, Jesus Christ. POPE FRANCIS INTENTIONS FOR MARCH Universal: That those involved in scientific research may serve the well-being of the whole human person. Evangelization: That the unique contribution of women to the life of the Church may be recognized always. CHRISM MASS We are once again providing a bus to the Cathedral for the Chrism Mass on March 30th. If you have never attended this Mass, this would be a great opportunity for you to do so without the hassle of driving through traffic and looking for parking once you re there. The bus will leave the Mason Parking Lot at 4 p.m. and return between 9:30 and 10 p.m. Please plan on bringing something to eat on the bus, as the lines will be long at the deli at the cathedral. Space is very limited so if you are interested in joining us, please call the parish office as soon as possible to sign-up. As in previous years, we are asking for a $10 donation per person to cover some of the expense. All monies will be taken at the time of boarding; please have exact amount. Anger? Loneliness? Overcome your struggles with Walking Toward Eternity: Engaging the Struggles of Your Heart Bible Study In our busy lives we are faced with obstacles that aggravate us, discourage us, and can even hinder our relationship with Christ. Finding the time to address them is often lost by the business of life. How do we overcome these obstacles, and hear God s voice in our lives? Engaging the Struggles of Your Heart, the second series in the Walking Toward Eternity program, is a challenging study that can open our eyes to obstacles in our Christian walk. Through prayer, reflection, guidance and the aid of the Holy Spirit, we begin to engage these difficulties in a positive way as we continue toward our goal of union with Christ. Join us for Walking Toward Eternity: Engaging the Struggles of Your Heart in Grill Hall AB beginning March 25 at 9:30 a.m. and continuing every Wednesday.
