HONOURING THE LORD. Proverbs 3: September 2018

Transcription:

A prophecy: The word of the Lord to Israel through Malachi. 2 I have loved you, says the Lord. But you ask, How have you loved us? Was not Esau Jacob s brother? declares the Lord. Yet I have loved Jacob, 3 but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals. 4 Edom may say, Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild the ruins. But this is what the Lord Almighty says: They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the Lord.

5 You will see it with your own eyes and say, Great is the Lord even beyond the borders of Israel! 6 A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me? says the Lord Almighty. It is you priests who show contempt for my name. But you ask, How have we shown contempt for your name? 7 By offering defiled food on my altar. But you ask, How have we defiled you? By saying that the Lord s table is contemptible.

8 When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you? says the Lord Almighty. 9 Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you? says the Lord Almighty.

10 Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you, says the Lord Almighty, and I will accept no offering from your hands. 11 My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations, says the Lord Almighty.

12 But you profane it by saying, The Lord s table is defiled, and, Its food is contemptible. 13 And you say, What a burden! and you sniff at it contemptuously, says the Lord Almighty. When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands? says the Lord. Malachi 1:1-13

2 I have loved you, says the Lord. But you ask, How have you loved us? Was not Esau Jacob s brother? declares the Lord. Yet I have loved Jacob, Malachi 1:2 NIV

13 And you say, What a burden! and you sniff at it contemptuously, says the Lord Almighty. When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands? says the Lord. Malachi 1:13 NIV

18 You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Deuteronomy 8:18 ESV

10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. 1 Timothy 6:10 ESV

6 A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me? says the Lord Almighty Malachi 1:6a NIV

11 When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and your fathers, and shall give it to you, 12 you shall set apart to the Lord all that first opens the womb. All the firstborn of your animals that are males shall be the Lord s. 13 Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. Exodus 13:11-13 ESV

9 Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; 10 then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. Proverbs 3:9-10 ESV

3 In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. Genesis 4:3-5 ESV

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. Matthew 23:23 NIV

Tithe: Responding to God with a grateful heart by returning a tenth of my income to Him the moment it is credited to my account.

6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. Malachi 3:10 NIV

20 Wise people save the nice things they have. Fools use up everything as soon as they get it. Proverbs 21:20 ERV

Quote: One definition of maturity is learning to delay pleasure. Children do what feels good; adults devise a plan and follow it.

22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children s children, but the sinner s wealth is laid up for the righteous. Proverbs 13:22 ESV

a. Cut your coat according to the material 2 I have loved you, says the Lord Malachi 1:2a NIV

b. Be contented and avoid impressing people 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 1 Timothy 6:6 ESV

22 The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it. Proverbs 10:22 ESV

23 Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds, Proverbs 27:23 ESV

12 Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts. Malachi 3:12
