Volume 4, Issue 10 4 April 2018 Diocese of the Armenian Church in the United Kingdom and Ireland In this issue: EASTER CELEBRATION AT ST. YEGHICHE EASTER LUNCHEON DIVINE LITURGY IN DUBLIN GOOD FRIDAY IN MANCHESTER ST. SARKISS CELEBRATIONS HOLY WEEK IN PICTURES SPIRITUALITY - FREQUENTLY- ASKED QUESTIONS ON THE BADARAK ARMENIAN STREET FESTIVAL 2018 NEW PROGRAMMES AT THE BISHOP S HOUSE ANNOUNCEMENTS UPCOMING EVENTS Diocese of the Armenian Church of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland His Grace Bishop Hovakim Manukyan, Primate Diocesan Office Tel. 0208 998 921 EASTER CELEBRATION AT ST. YEGHICHE CHURCH On April 1, Easter Sunday, His Grace Bishop Hovakim Manulyan celebrated divine liturgy. During the liturgy His Grace read the Easter Message of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians. On the wondrous feast of the Holy Resurrection of Christ, with joy in our souls we exchange with each other the life-giving good news, Christ is risen. The tomb of the Lord is empty. His divine power is revealed and the defeat of death as well as the victory of life is a reality. The representatives of Armenian embassy, led by Mr Armen Liloyan were present at the liturgy. At the end of the liturgy Primate conducted the service Andastan - blessings of four corners of the world as well as Easter eggs. Rev Fr. Jirayr Tashjian assisted His Grace during the service. At the end of the service, the faithful joined a wonderful Easter celebration lunch organised by the Ladies Committee. You can read the full text to the Catholicos message here (in English) and here (in Armenian). primatesoffice@armenia

EASTER LUNCHEON Bishop Hovakim Manukyan brought the London Armenian community together for an enjoyable Easter Family Lunch in the company of Fr Shnork Baghdassarian, Father Bsag and Father Jirair, Primate's guest from Paris. The event was organised by the Primate's Ladies Committee to mark and celebrate this important day for the Armenians. The celebrations started with the opening welcome by the chair of Ladies Committee Jeanine Gulvanessian, followed by blessings by Bishop Hovakim Manukyan and Father Jirair. Music by DJ Steve 'Funky East' created an amazing atmosphere and as the afternoon continued there was hardly space left on the dance floor! The guests enjoyed a few songs by Hovik Arakelyan, the conductor of St. Sarkiss church and Fr Jirair, Bishop Hovakim Manukyan also delighted them by his entertaining jokes. After taking part in an 'Easter egg hunt' competition organised by ACYO, our young guests left with a basket full of eggs and big happy smiles on their faces. The event came to an end by Bishop Hovakim Manukyan thanking Jeanine and the ladies committee for organising such delightful event. 2

DIVINE LITURGY IN DUBLIN Primate celebrated Divine Liturgy on Easter Monday in Dublin, April 2. After liturgy there was Easter luncheon, Armenian music, dancing and games for children. At the end of the liturgy, they also conducted a special prayer service for the loving memory of the Armenian soldiers who fell in Artsakh during the April War. The Primate thanked the Parish Council and its chairwoman Aida Sarafian for organising this wonderful event. 3

GOOD FRIDAY IN MANCHESTER Primate visited Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Manchester and presided over the vesper's and the rite of burial. Reverend Father Der Nerses Nersesian co-celebrated with bishop. Deacons Tatto Couligian and Arthur Bobikyan, Debirs Ara Couligian and Zareh Nersisyan assisted the bishop and priests. At the end of the service Primate preached on the importance of the day explaining the tradition and the meaning of the Holy Tomb. 4

EASTER VIGIL AT ST. SARKISS CHURCH His Grace Bishop Hovakim Manukyan conducted divine liturgy at St. Sarkiss church on 31 March, Saturday evening. Very Reverend Fr Bsag Hapatian, Reverend Fr Shnork Baghdasarian and deacons Stepan Ovanessoff, Levon Stepan, and Richard Cherkezian assisted the Primate. The Primate announced the good news of Resurrection and preached to the congregation. After the service, the procession entered the Nvart Gulbenkian Hall, where House Blessing was conducted. The Primate said in his sermon: Easter is a feast of victory; it is the finest victory over death. Won not by the sword but rather by the virtue of love. The good news that the apostles brought to the world is about the unquestionable triumph of Jesus that began in the Holy Tomb of Jerusalem. It is an invitation to all of us to abide by Jesus s words and to follow His way, so that we may find the happiness that we are all seeking. Easter is also jolly time, Feast of victory and Christians celebrating with songs, dances, games and jokes. And here is our own April Fool s Joke: We bless eggs in England, they turn into chocolate. Any suggestions who might have said this? 5

HOLY WEEK IN PICTURES The Primate would like to thank Very Reverend Fr Jirayr Tashjian, for his kind help and support during Holy Week. 6

SPIRITUALITY - FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS ON THE BADARAK: THE DIVINE LITURGY OF THE ARMENIAN CHURCH IS THE BADARAK BIBLICAL? Second feature on Badarak, using V. Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan s excellent book, published by St. Vartan Press in 2009. WHO COMPOSED THE MUSIC OF OUR BADARAK? There are three musical settings of the Badarak that are commonly heard today. The most common setting is by Magar Yegmalian (1857-1905). Also very popular is the setting by Gomidas Vartabed (Soghomon Soghomonian, 1869-1935), the renowned composer, scholar and reformer of Armenian sacred and secular music. More recently, a musical setting by Khoren Meikhanedjian (1937-), former director of the cathedral choir of Holy Etchmiadzin, was authorized for use by the late Catholicos Vasken I. Many other composers, Armenian and non-armenian, have set the Armenian Divine Liturgy to music, however these settings are rarely heard today. The Badarak is entirely biblical, and in more ways than one. The story of Jesus Last Supper, which is the heart of the Divine Liturgy, is narrated in the Gospels of Matthew (26:26-29), Mark (14:22-25), and Luke (22:15-20). St. Paul gives us our earliest account of the Lord s Supper in 1Corinthians (11:23-25). Besides these, there are many other references in the Bible to Christians breaking bread, which means celebrating the Lord s Supper or Divine Liturgy (Acts 2:42). Our Badarak also has deep roots in early Jewish worship customs as they are described in the Old Testament, especially in the books of Exodus, Deuteronomy, and others. Virtually every word we hear in the prayers and hymns of the Divine Liturgy, moreover, is either a direct quotation from the Bible; a poetic paraphrase of a specific Biblical passage; or a reflection on a specific text from Scripture. Many worship phrases from the Badarak such as Holy, holy, holy [Soorp soorp soorp] are drawn from the Book of Revelation, where the angels worship of God in heaven is described. It is very significant that our Church s worship practices have a precedent in the Bible. We should also remember that many practices of the Armenian Church, such as the Eucharist (Badarak) were already in use well before the oldest book of the New Testament was written, at least two decades after Jesus resurrection. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, St. Paul and the other saintly authors of the New Testament were already devout participants in the Lord s Supper when they sat down to write about it in the biblical books they penned. Biblical scholars have identified passages in the New Testament where the author seems to have been influenced by the worship customs of his day. So not only is the Divine Liturgy biblical, but in some ways the Bible is liturgical! 7

HOUSE BLESSING (ՏՆՕՐՀՆԵՔ) One of the traditions of the Armenian Church is the Home Blessing Service. It symbolises the visit of Resurrected Christ the Upper House and blessing of the disciples (John 20:19). Priests and bishops visit the homes of the faithful on the occasions of Christmas (Theophany) and Easter (Holy Resurrection) to bring the good news of our Lord s Nativity and Resurrection to bless them and their homes through a special Service. During the Service the priest prays to God and asks Him to keep the home, its inhabitants and the children in good health, so that they live a devout life, glorify the name of Almighty God and strengthen the Holy Church. Those faithful who want a priest to visit and bless their home are welcome to contact their respective parishes or the Primate s Office. PRAYER OF THE MONTH During this holy season of Easter, we pray for our home country, as we expect a lot of changes. 8

ARMENIAN STREET FESTIVAL 2018 The Armenian Street Festival has outgrown its present location at Iverna Gardens, Kensington. With the blessing of the Bishop's office and the hard work of its employees and many volunteers, we have applied to the London Borough of Ealing to use the North Acton Playing Fields. This venue has been used by our community Football team AYA FC for league matches in the past. The date we have set is 15TH OF JULY. This date is also hosting the final of the World Cup and the Wimbledon men's final. So we are trying to make provision to stage these events on a BIG SCREEN. The Bishop's office is also making hopeful approaches to Baroness Cox, patron of the British Heart Foundation to stage a charity mini marathon on the same day. As well as the above, there will be a football match AYA FC V THE SAMURAI of the Japanese community who are also staging an event similar to ours on the same day. Other activities such as races, tennis tournament, children's activities, face painting, are also being planned. And, don't forget our food and cultural stalls and live music. So please watch this space and wish the best for our applications. The Bishop s office and the organisers are also looking for a sponsor to organise broadcasts and liverstreams from the Armenian Street Festival and other events and lectures. Please contanct the Primate s Office if you d like to help us to bring our events to the wider community. 9
