Cambridge, MA From the Director of Faith Formation Having gone to a parochial grammar school, staffed by the Sisters of Mercy, I have strong memories of Lent. It was a solemn and quiet time; gray, downbeat, and dreadfully long. There were several morning Masses. Students were required to attend daily before school began. The sisters used wooden clappers instead of bells and crickets to prompt students movements (we were regimented like little soldiers). We had to attend Stations of the Cross on Friday afternoons (after school, of course). These were packed. All clergy and all altar boys (yes, only boys back then) in surplice and cassock, led by the pastor, in formal procession, chanting the Stabat Mater Dolorosa- the sorrowful mother was standing. There was fasting (which meant not eating at all) and the pledge of giving up something (for which it was a sin to break). I was not a fan of Lent. But I have evolved. Before, Lent was a period of self-inflicted suffering, to better understand the sufferings of Christ. Today it is a period of preparation, a time of self-reflection and improvement, and, most importantly, a time of joyful anticipation. We are moving towards Holy Week, when we remember the great events in our Church history and the final days of our Lord and Teacher, Jesus of Nazareth. And then there is the Resurrection, God s supreme act of love. The sisters did teach me something very important during Lent and which I ll never forget: What God had done for his Son, he has promised to do for me, for everyone. Please read in this bulletin about the wonderful opportunities we have to help us prepare for God s promise to us. Meal Program Valentines Thank you to all the parishioners who participated in the Valentine's project for the Harvard Square Churches Meal Program. We collected 150 Dunkin Donuts $10 gift cards. Children and adults made Valentine's cards after the 9:00 a.m. Mass last weekend. Each Valentine will contain a gift card and will be given to guests of the Meal Program. These small acts of generosity, neighborliness, and love will bring smiles and joy to our neighbors in need. Thank you all for your generosity and kindness! Lent Online This Lent, come to know Jesus as a friend, and experience God s unbelievable love and generosity toward us. Living Lent Daily is a daily e-mail series designed to help you grow in friendship with God. It is offered for free by Loyola Press, a Jesuit ministry. Each day s message includes a brief reflection by William A. Barry, SJ, that will help you enter into a personal and genuine Lenten prayer practice. The messages also include suggestions for further exploration of Lenten themes through additional online articles and prayers. To learn more and to sign up, please visit www.loyolapress.com Reconciliation Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 p.m. The Light Is on for You The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered Wednesday evenings during Lent, in the church, in addition to Saturdays from 3:00 3:45 p.m. Do You Love to Sing? Join Our Easter Choir Have you thought about being in the choir, but cannot make a lengthy commitment? If so, please join our Adult Easter Choir, which provides music for our liturgical celebrations during Holy Week in late March: Palm Sunday, March 25, 4:00 p.m. Saturday, 11:30 a.m. Sunday Holy Thursday, March 29, 7:00 p.m. Easter Vigil, March 31, 7:30 p.m. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings at 8:00 p.m. in the church on February 28, March 7, 14, 21, and 28. Anyone can join. No auditions! Please call or email Doreen Gulledge 617-547-4235 x118 or dgulledge@saintpetercambridge.org. Pope Tweets @Pontifex We cannot remain silent before the suffering of millions of people whose dignity has been wounded. February 8, 2018 I feel deep pain for the many children torn from their families and forced to become child soldiers. This is a trajedy! February 12, 2018 4
