One of my favorite hymns for Passiontide (the last two weeks of Lent) is My Song is Love Unknown, which appears in our hymnal (#196, text by Samuel Crossman). Most relevant to today, Palm Sunday, is the third stanza: Sometimes they strew his way, / And his sweet praises sing, / Resounding all the day / Hosannas to their King. Then Crucify is all their breath, / And for his death they thirst and cry. Today s liturgy began with the acclamation Hosanna Filio David Hosanna to the Son of David! And then we sang in the opening hymn, All glory, laud, and honor / To thee, Redeemer, King! Yet moments later, during the solemn reading of St. Luke s passion narrative, we cried out, Crucify him! This practice of taking the angry crowd s words on ourselves is a reminder of how often we pay lip service to God, saying the right words at all the right time at Mass, and yet fail to follow through when the pressure of culture, friends, and selfishness make it difficult. The Holy Week liturgies, from today through Easter, are a beautiful antidote to this problem. In the course of the week, if we follow them carefully, they take us from sin to repentance, from death to life, from spiritual nomads to members of a heavenly kingdom.
