Ballard, Pastor Emeritus There is a portion of a sermon by John Winthrop, given in 1630 to a group of newly arrived pilgrims aboard their ship in the harbor prior to disembarking upon the shore of the New England settlement. It is titled, City upon a Hill alluding to the vision and challenge to be met and for what they will surely be thankful. Winthrop begins with mention of avoiding a shipwreck by which he means the wrath of God that falls on peoples or nations who fail to do God s will. Now the onely way to avoyde this shipwracke and to provide for our posterity is to followe the Counsell of Micah, to doe Justly, to love mercy, to walke humbly with our God, for this end, wee must be knitt together in this worke as one man, wee must entertaine each other in brotherly Affeccion, wee must be willing to abridge our selves of our superfluities, for the supply of others necessities, wee must uphold a familiar Commerce together in all meekenes, gentlenes, patience and liberallity, wee must delight in eache other, make others Condicions our owne rejoyce together, mourne together, labour, and suffer together, allwayes haveing before our eyes our Commission and Community in the worke, our Community as members of the same body. Soe shall wee keepe the unitie of the spirit in the bond of peace, the Lord will be our God and delight to dwell among us, as his owne people and will commaund a blessing upon us in all our wayes, soe that wee shall see much more of his wisdome power goodnes and truthe then formerly wee have beene acquainted with, For wee must Consider that wee shall be as a Citty upon a Hill, the eies of all people are uppon us; soe that if wee shall deale falsely with our god in this worke wee have undertaken and soe cause him to withdrawe his present help from us, wee shall be made a story and a byword through the world. Beloved there is now sett before us life, and good, deathe and evill in that wee are Commaunded this day to love the Lord our God, and to love one another to walke in his wayes and to keepe his Commaundements and his Ordinance, and his lawes, and the Articles of our Covenant with him that wee may live and be multiplyed, and that the Lord our God may blesse us in the land whether wee goe to possesse it: Therefore lett us choose life, that wee, and our Seede, may live; by obeyeing his voyce, and cleaveing to him, for hee is our life, and our prosperity. (Continued from pg. 1) When I reflect upon our holiday of Thanksgiving, my thoughts are upon the challenges faced by those who chose to resettle themselves in a different world from that which they knew. Thanksgiving is about surviving the challenges that are placed before us and acknowledging from where we find the strength, courage and confidence to meet the challenges of life. The vision of our congregation and those of our neighboring congregations is to create and maintain a truly godly society. We may not all fear the wrath of God, for, we discover our shipwreck is the harm we cause to ourselves and the future of our nation by our failure to meet challenges in a godly way. We celebrate Thanksgiving not because we have averted the wrath of God. We can be thankful for the God led efforts of ourselves and others who with time, talents and gifts seek to make more real the vision of a more perfect kingdom upon the earth. Volume 17 Issue 8 Page 3 Short-Term Adult Study - The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem A four-session study, led by Reverend Sam Askew, will be offered on Thursday evenings at the church in the sanctuary from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. The author of this study is Pastor Adam Hamilton, senior pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, one of the fastest growing churches in the country. Pastor Hamilton did the actual walk and filmed in the Holy Land so that we will with him retrace the actual path of Mary and Joseph s journey to Bethlehem. Registration is free and open to all adults in the community. It is requested that you register in advance so that additional materials can be made available. A companion book is available through most bookstores as well as a downloadable version, but is not necessary for this study. All information needed for discussion will be covered each session in a 10 minute video presentation and the discussion that follows. Volume 17 Issue 8 Page 5 Women s Fellowship Kathy Queen, President Loving Learning Laughing Serving As I write this we are planning for the Trunk or Treat Halloween night at 5:30. Thank you those who have brought candy donations and to those who are decorating their cars, trucks and motorcycle! Without your generosity we could not pull off this event. I am also looking forward to those delicious Robert Beale hot dogs! Hope to see you there on the 31 st 5:30-7:30. Pictures of the event will be in nest month s newsletter. I am thankful for the ladies of our church who belong to the Fellowship. They are an amazing group of women who humbly try to do God s work in our church and community. The Fellowship is made up of two circles. If you are not a member of a circle I urge you to consider joining. Circle #2 meets in the daytime and usually they have lunch together. Dot Gwaltney and Beverly Parsons are the Co-Chairs of this circle. The M&Ms Circle meets at night and the chairwoman is Pat Ambrose. Please see me or one of these ladies for any questions you may have about the meetings. Both circles meet on the first Monday of each month. Next meeting day is November 6. You will enjoy an interesting program and fun fellowship. November 12 - Free - Movie Night We are trying something different instead of having a dinner we are having a movie and dessert. We hope you will join us on Sunday November 12, from 6:00-8:30. We will enjoy a movie and a time of fellowship and dessert after the movie. The event is free and we hope you will come and bring a neighbor or two! Volume 17 Issue 8 Page 6 The M & Ms Circle held their October meeting at Consulate Health Care in Windsor on October 2nd at 6:00 p.m. After a short business meeting we played Bingo with the residents. We had a really good turnout this year and winners received LARGE prizes. A good time was had by all as the pictures can attest to! Our next meeting will be November 6th at Courtney Roggmann s home at 6:30 p.m. (dinner will be provided). Come and join us for some good fellowship! Patsy Ambrose Chairperson
Volume 17 Issue 8 Page 7 Circle #2 is once again sponsoring the Samaritan Purse s Operation Christmas Child Shoebox program. Shoeboxes and brochures are available at church at both entrances and we ask that you have your filled shoeboxes back to the church by November 13 th. In packing your boxes it is suggested that you start with WOW small toy and then fill with other fun toys, hygiene items and school supplies. DO NOT INCLUDE candy; toothpaste; used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives, or military figures; seeds; chocolate or food; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans. If you are unable to shop but would like to contribute toward a box, Kay Stephenson will be happy to do the shopping for you. Thanks in advance for your support! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Circle #2 is continuing their drive to collect new or gently used children s and adult s coats, jackets, scarves, mittens and hats. Please bring your clean garments and place them in the boxes in the vestibule or the lobby. We debuted them on Sunday, October 15, as we processed proudly down the aisle. The Women s Fellowship saw a need even before we did, and with lots of hard work, fundraising, and dessert baking, you all made it happen. Thanks to each one of you. A special thanks to Kathy Queen, Fellowship president, for all her hard work in making it happen, as well as to Anita Holland, Chair of the Music Committee. We look forward to many years of making a joyful noise in our new robes!!!
Volume 17 Issue 8 Page 8 Another month has passed and we are into the fall which is one of my favorite seasons. We will be having the flag pole worked on in the next several weeks which will mean some disruptions in the front yard and probably some equipment in the parking lot. We are also in the process of updating the flood lights for the steeple and flag pole so they may be out for a week or two. If you see anything that needs attention, such as light bulbs that need to be replaced, please let any member of the Property Committee know. Thank you, Mike Roggmann, Chairperson M O V I E R E C O M M E N D A T I O N Same Kind of Different as Me is an inspiring movie based on the book by the same name. It shares the true story of Deborah and Ron Hall, a wealthy Texas couple and homeless Louisiana-born man named Denver/Suicide. It is a story of forgiveness, hope and transformation. The uneducated Denver enlightens you with his simple words of wisdom. The unselfishness of Debbie inspires you and the transformation of Ron gives you hope. This movie reminds you that one person s actions can initiate rippling force that brings change to many. It is a lesson of loving the unlovable summed up in one of Denver s quotes: Sometimes you just have to bless the hell out of some folks. Go see this movie the blessing will be yours. Volume 17 Issue 8 Page 9 The WCC Adult Art Class continues to meet on Wednesdays from 12:30-3:00 pm. thru November 15th which will end our fall session. We are not accepting new students at this time but will when we resume in January for our winter session. Artists may begin their art experience following the Prayer and Praise Service about 11:30 bring your lunch. Take time to view the exhibits in the Fellowship Hall and lobby. Hannah W. Holland, Instructor The Board of Deacons sponsored a bowling outing on Sunday, September 24th at the Franklin Bowling Center. We had some serious bowlers in our group and some not so serious. Actually some of us might have had golf and bowling mixed up weren t we trying to get the lowest score??? We had a GREAT time and some WONDERFUL fellowship. If you missed this one, make sure you sign up next time!
