FEBRUARY 2017 CONNECT GRACE-FILLED COMMUNITY INSPIRED WORSHIP TRANSFORMATIONAL MISSION A SHARED JOURNEY And he said to them, Follow me and I will make you fish for people. Immediately, they left their nets and followed him. Matthew 4:19-20 One of the most frequently used and perhaps least understood word in the life of the church is discipleship. It is a word that was used by Jesus as an instruction to his own followers that they might go and make disciples. Simply put, being a disciple of Jesus Christ is walking with him, learning from him and allowing his teachings and example to shape our words and actions. Like any journey, following Jesus often entails twists and turns and requires commitment to return to the path again and again. It is also a journey to which we invite, lead and empower others to take part. A disciple looks like a sheep from the front and like a shepherd from behind, meaning that we are constantly seeking to follow the ministry and teachings of Jesus, while leading and empowering others to be a part of the same journey. Discipleship is not a straight path, where we go only forward in our maturity and spiritual understandings, but sometimes more like a meandering road. That is why sharing the journey is so important, so that we may be encouragers to others when the path is rocky and so we ourselves may find strength, support, encouragement and inspiration by others as we seek to follow Jesus. In February, we will be looking at the discipleship journey, focusing on what matters to God and how we can live lives that reflect the same priorities. From January 22 into February, I will be preaching a sermon series on discipleship, called A Fresh Look. In the pages of this newsletter, you will find many opportunities to share the discipleship journey with others, growing deeper in relationship with God and in the form of beloved community.
