From the Pastor s Desk We Already Know For Christmas, Lisa gave me a certificate for three sessions with a personal trainer at the Prairie Athletic Club. Yesterday, I came across the five minute video of the 131-car accident on I-41. Both of these things remind me that there are things we already know. Such as: I need to modify my diet, and exercise. When the roads are snowy and icy, we need to be careful and drive slowly. I don t need the personal trainer to tell me to change my diet and exercise regularly, but since I have been encouraged by my wife, and have now gone to see the personal trainer a couple of times, (and stepped on this machine that told me that my body is 30% fat), I find that my motivation level has increased and I am starting (only just getting started, mind you) to actually do what I already know. I didn t need to see a five minute video of cars slowly moving along the highway only to see a couple of more cars come cruising into the frame going, obviously, too fast, then smash into the cars in front of them, and then see the same scenario repeated again, and again, and again, to know that I need to slow down when the roads are covered in snow and ice but the video does serve as a reminder and encouragement to do what I already know. At the end of The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 7) Jesus tells the story of the wise man and foolish man who built their houses on rock and sand, respectively. When times get troubled, when the rains and floods come, the house of the wise man, built on rock will stand while the house of the foolish man, built on sand, will fall. (Mt. 7:24-27) Jesus tells us that what makes the difference between the wise and the foolish is whether, after we have heard the words and teachings of Jesus, we act on them, or not. We know what we are to do. Jesus has told us. Love. Forgive. Be merciful. Do not judge others. Pray rather than criticize. Give. It s just like diet and exercise, like driving carefully we learn from Jesus. We know what we are to do. Follow him. Your Pastor in Christ, Pastor Robb 9
