ORDER OF MORNING WORSHIP May 28, 2017 MEDITATION Our Lord we pray that Your presence would be so strong among Your people this morning that the secrets of our hearts would be revealed and we would humbly worship the Savior who freely offers forgiveness and cleansing to us. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? - Romans 8:31-32 GREETING and ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL to WORSHIP In general, sin is the worst of evils, the evil of evil and indeed the only evil. Nothing is so evil as sin, nothing is evil but sin No evil is displeasing to God or destructive to man but the evil of sin. Sin is worse than affliction, than death, than the devil, than hell. Affliction is not so afflictive, death is not so deadly, the devil is not so devilish, hell is not so hellish as sin is. Therefore our prayers should be more to be delivered from sin and if God hear no prayer else, yet as to this we should say. We beseech Thee to hear us, good Lord. The Plague of Plagues, 1669 - Ralph Venning HYMN PRAYER of INVOCATION SONGS of PRAISE and WORSHIP (on screen) Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken By Faith, We See the Hand of God CORPORATE CONFESSION (on screen) #4 All Praise to God, Who Reigns Above O Gracious God, we confess the darkness of our hearts. We have complained in the face of Your mercies. We have been blinded to all Your good gifts. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Give us the gift of repentance and enable us to turn away from discontentment, And in its place give us contented hearts, So that we might glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

SONGS of PRAISE and WORSHIP (on screen) O Praise the Name The Law of the Lord Is Perfect MISSIONS FOCUS CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER OFFERING DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. - Matthew 6:9-13 GREETING (Children 3-4 years old may leave for Children s Church - room 134) SPECIAL MUSIC God Himself Is With Us - Adult Choir SCRIPTURE Jeremiah 52:1-11 SERMON HYMN Why Will You Die? Pastor Doug Kittredge #642 Be Thou My Vision My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Those who are far from You will perish; You destroy all who are unfaithful to You. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all Your deeds. - Psalm 73:26-28 BENEDICTION

NOTES Lord s Day May 28, 2017 Why Will You Die? Jeremiah 52:1-11 A young man goes into a movie theatre and shoots unarmed theatre goers knowing that he will be killed himself. Why? Historically, murderers run away in an act of selfpreservation. Think of John Wilkes Booth who after assassinating Abraham Lincoln fled for twelve days before being killed by a Union soldier in Maryland. By contrast, the attack at the theatre could only be viewed as an intentional act of suicide. The focus is on gun control but the deeper issue was why had he so despaired of life? The number of suicides has increased particularly among the young. It is the second leading cause of death between those 18-25. More teens and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease combined. Hope does not naturally spring eternal in the human breast. I. Choose Life Jeremiah 52:1-3 A. A choice was given to Zedekiah by Jeremiah the prophet Jeremiah 34:1-5 1. Surrender to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon 2. He would die in peace and be honored 3. But Zedekiah ignored the reality of the living God. This is the first step to choosing death. B. But Zedekiah defied God and rebelled against Babylon Jeremiah 52:3 1. Government is appointed by God and rulers are under His authority Romans 13:1 2. God removes kings and raises up kings Daniel 2:20-21 3. Choosing to defy God-given authority and isolating yourself from others is the second step II. Demoralized A. The Czech sociologist Thomas Masaryk in the first scientific sociological study recorded these statistics in the book Suicide and the Meaning of Civilization in 1881 1. Protestant nations such as England, Scotland, and the Netherlands in 1881 had the lowest suicide rates 2. He concluded, Christianity became the true teaching of life; the gospels teach the love of life and not death. Thus new message rescued and saved the dying pagan world; Christianity nipped in the bud the morbid suicide tendency of ancient polytheism and returned life to man. 3. The social mass phenomena of suicide are to be explained... as a tragic result of the prevalent irreligiosity of the masses... and the great tensions of the progressively growing moral anarchy... feeding a pessimistic world view. On the other hand, Masaryk asserts, Christians have a moral support, are happy, satisfied and reconciled to life, but only a few can find a support in life comparable to that found in Christian faith. B. The rise in suicide in the USA corresponds to the dismantling of the morals of the USA. 1. This is literally what is meant by a nation being de-moralized 2. God sets before His people hope in His moral law Deuteronomy 30:15-16 3. Choose life Deuteronomy 30:19 Zedekiah chose death Jeremiah 52:2 C. God s law is good Romans 7:12 1. Because the law defines the character of God which will never change Matthew 5:17-18 2. To disobey even one command offends the person who gave the law James 2:10 3. God has made us in His image so we have an innate knowledge of God Romans 2:14-15 4. To violate the law of God damages who you are as an image because of God John 16:8-10; Romans 1:32

5. The result of guilt anger alternately focused on others and on oneself Genesis 4:5-8. Sin is like a wild animal that will leap on you and devour you 6. Is this generation in the USA like the one described in Proverbs 30:11-14? Such a generation is guilt-ridden filled with envy and self-pity 7. Such people are not helpless; the solution is to repent of sin and trust Christ 1 John 1:7-9 D. Reality is what is left after vain imaginations evaporate into thin air 1. Abortion is considered health care 2. Changing laws to accommodate those who cannot accept their gender is to encourage suicide 3. Repentance to God and faith in Jesus Christ alone brings life 2 Peter 3:9; Acts 17:30-31 III. God s Grace Jeremiah 52:31-34 A. For 45 years, God provided a shepherd after God s own heart to call Zedekiah and Israel to repentance and life Jeremiah 3:15 1. Christian discipline 2 Corinthians 7:12 2. Lawlessness results in loneliness Matthew 24:12 3. God s plan for reconciliation in Matthew 18:15-18 is essential to knowing the care of others B. God provides a Savior Jeremiah 52:31-34 1. God had promised a son of David to always rule on the throne of David 2 Samuel 7:16 2. The imprisonment of Jehoiachin 2 Kings 24:8-12 3. Captive for 37 years Jeremiah 52:31 4. He took him into the royal palace Jeremiah 52:32-34 5. Jehoiachin had a son from which line the Messiah Jesus Christ was to be born Matthew 1:11-16 The hope of the gospel is lived out in the community of Christ s local church that seeks to love God by honoring His commandments John 14:21 Upcoming Sunday School Classes Covenant of Discipleship (Pastor Doug s office) Bible: Hebrews (fireside room) Theology: The Truths We Confess (room 217) Marriage: When Sinners Say I Do (room 100) How to Study the Bible (room 219) NLIC GIVING General Fund Faith Promise Weekly Budget $12,937 $2,288 Giving last week 12,790 3,122 +/- for week - 147 834 +/- fiscal year 39,864-1,805 Online Giving Available at www.nlicc.org/online-giving Next Week s Nursery Attendants - 6/4 10:00 am Ray and Tami Mattozzi John and Judy Hinson 6:00 pm Steve and Kathryne Marple Prayer Chain - Have a prayer request contact either Krystal Dowell 786-4218; adowell8@msn.com or Kathy Wilson 891-7235; r2wilson22@hotmail.com.
