Order of Service for the Third Sunday In Advent The altar flowers are in celebration of the 42nd anniversary of Evie and Wally Schauer Welcome: Pastor Marc E. Nauman Lighting of The Advent Candle Bible Verse for December But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. Galatians 4:4-5 Children s Blessing (second service) Invocation Pastor: In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit Congregation: Amen. Introit Pastor: Show us your unfailing love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. I will listen to what God the Lord will say; he promises peace to his people, his saints but let them not return to folly. Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. The Lord will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest. Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps. Congregation: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. Pastor: Show us your unfailing love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. 2

Opening Hymn First Service: #13 Savior Of The Nations, Come (v. 1-4) Second Service: Hungry (displayed) The Confession and Forgiveness Pastor: Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, Congregation: whose hope is in the LORD his God. Pastor: The LORD sets prisoners free, Congregation: the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down, the LORD loves the righteous. (Silence for reflection and self-examination) Congregation: Heavenly Father, I confess to you my many and constant sins. I have not always remained humble before you. I cannot produce the righteousness you demand. I deserve your judgment. But I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I cling to Your mercy given to us in Jesus Christ. By Your Holy Spirit teach us true humility and true obedience to Your Word. Amen. Absolution of Sins Song of Response First Service: #13 Savior Of The Nations, Come (v. 5-8) Second Service: There Is A Redeemer (displayed) The Collect of the Day Pastor: Almighty God, through John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, you once proclaimed salvation; now grant that we may know this salvation and serve you in both holiness and righteousness all the days of our lives; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God now and forever. Congregation: Amen. The Reading of God s Word: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test every- 3

thing; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Congregation: Thanks be to God. The Gospel: John 1:19-28 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." So they said to him, "Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said." (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" John answered them, "I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. Elder: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Congregation: Praise to You, O Christ. The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; Who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was 4

made man; and was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered, and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; His kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Hymn Of The Day First Service: #34 Come, O Precious Ransom The Message: Always Prayers of the Church Pastor: Lord, in Your Mercy Congregation: Hear our prayer! The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Song Of The Day Second Service: Bless The Lord (displayed) Offering Please fill out the red Friendship Folder for your row then pass it to the person next to you. The Noisy Offering supports Trinity s Youth Group 5

Children return to the Sanctuary (second service) The Lord s Supper Pastor: The Lord be with you. Congregation: And also with you. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. Congregation: We lift them to the Lord. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Congregation: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Admonition Sharing of the Lord s Peace Sanctus Words of Institution Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper, he took the cup and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Pax Domini The Peace of the Lord The Distribution of the Bread and Wine Post Communion Collect Congregation: We give thanks to you, Almighty God, that you have refreshed us through this Sacrament. We ask that, in Your mercy, you would strengthen us in faith towards You, and in love towards one another through Jesus Christ Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen. 6
