From Rev. Annie s Desk..... Happy Birthday, Church Pentecost Sunday May 15 is Pentecost Sunday in the Christian Church. It s traditionally thought of as the birthday of the church. We will celebrate by wearing red. Here are some fun facts about Pentecost: Pentecost means 50, and Pentecost Sunday is celebrated 50 days (7 weeks) after Easter. It is celebrated as Whitsun, (White Sunday) in the UK because it was a day for baptisms and people wore white. Pentecost was the Festival of Weeks, or Shavout, in Hebrew tradition. Jewish tradition says that King David was born and died on Pentecost. Pentecost is celebrated in a variety of ways around the world and in different Christian circles. It is typically celebrated with symbolism like the color red, doves, and flames. There were wind, fire, and languages! Acts 2:1-6 records the story of the Holy Spirit coming to Jesus followers: On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. 5 At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. 6 When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. Condit Newsletter Beginning with the next edition, the Condit Newsletter will no longer be sent out via Yahoo Groups. It will be sent to you directly from Condit s website like the Prayer Chain is now. (Continue on page 8 ) VBS Needs Your Help Pam Sheets has done a wonderful job of organizing the material for Condit s Vacation Bible School but she needs people, supplies and energy to make the mission work. Christian Education.... Junior Worship Ends May 22 Spring Christian Education classes are drawing to a close. May 22 will be the last day of Junior Worship which is held during Sunday Worship. It gives the children a chance to start Worship with their families, hear a message geared to them and then go to their own group for a Sunday School lesson. Pam Sheets and Ken Bartlett have taught these children. Their lessons end with May 22. The middle and high school class will be also be wrapping up Sunday School discussion on May 22. They have been using the Sticky Faith Curriculum "Can I Ask That?". The topics have been stimulating, controversial and thought provoking. We have learned to be tolerant of others as our students attend high school and head for the college years. noted Georgann Whitney, who teaches the class with her husband John. Parents can help the committee by giving Georgann their opinions on the curriculums used with the classes. Any other suggestions or assistance is also welcome. Condit Vacation Bible School Needs Your Help (Continued from page 1) Supplies needed for props and decorations are black plastic sheets (tablecloths), rolls of brown paper (paper bag material), battery operated tea lights, climbing gear (helmets, ropes, harnesses, headlamps, lanterns) and dome shaped tent (sleeps 3-4) to use as a cave. Cash donations also help. Help is needed to build props and set up the stations. A VBS Work Day is scheduled from 5-7 on Saturday, May 14 th to make props. These will be put in place later. Around June 4 th, helpers are needed to set up the stations so all is ready for Monday morning. Crew leaders are needed to take the children from station to station where the theme of the day will be explored in different ways. If you can help in any way, please contact Pam at 937-902-4779. Updating Children s Classrooms The children's classroom remodel is well under way; the room has some new paint and cabinets. This room will hopefully also get a new table and chairs where the children can work, noted Molly Blevins. The nursery will be remodeled in the very near future with new paint and curtains as well as the baby station. It will have a fresh and exciting new look. -6-
