Ivanhoe News Volume 179, Issue 3 December 2016 O star of wonder, star of night Guide us to thy perfect light. The Christmas Star is the symbol of guidance, of the hope and joy of Christmas, and marking the place where the Magi would find the Christ Child. And so it is a perfect symbol for the season of Advent, as it symbolizes our annual Advent journey. The good news is that we can follow the Christ s star every day. As disciples, we follow the way of Christ, awaiting the birth of the Christ child again and the return of the Savior. We celebrate the light that is coming into the world the light of love the incarnation of light and love: God with us in Jesus. Come gather as we follow the star together! Sunday, December 11, Caroling In the afternoon, come join the warmth and harmony of caroling. We will meet at the church at 3 p.m., carpool, and then enjoy a potluck meal. Sign up to bring a dish and beverage to share. Sunday, December 18, Christmas Pageant & Yule Fest This year s Christmas Play captures the excitement of the relaunch of the Star Wars movies last year, and the new movie this year. Star Trip: Our Faith Awakens follows the Magi (Jedi knights) on their quest to find the child king foretold in prophecy. Along their way, they encounter both the dark and the light, the good and the bad. In the end, they meet Jesus, the true star of their trip. This updated and adapted play by the youth and children of our church will be offered at our 10 a.m. service. After worship we will hold our annual Yule Fest in fellowship hall. This event is a wonderful time of sharing, when you are invited to bring your favorite holiday dessert to share. Tuesday, December 20, Longest Night 7 p.m. For many of us, Christmas (and the whole holiday season) is a bittersweet time of year. It is a time for remembering both persons and events that have been a part of our lives in the past, but that are now changed or gone. This is the time of year with the longest nights, so around this time we offer a quiet, meditative worship service that makes time for remembering, sharing our laments with God, and preparing our hearts for the coming of Christ. Join us for a time of scripture reading, silent reflection, special music, healing prayer, and Holy Communion. Saturday, December 24, Christmas Eve Come follow the star to the Bethlehem window for worship at 8:00 p.m. This meaningful and memorable worship service highlights our beautifully decorated sanctuary. The traditional service includes readings, carols, and the lighting of candles. Sunday, December 25, Christmas Day Our regular Sunday morning worship becomes extra-special as it also celebrates the gift of Christmas morning. Our 10 a.m. service includes singing carols and remembering the story behind the song. Please consider making a special gift to the mission of the church during our Christmas Eve worship. You will find a special envelope in the pews, or through the church office. Glory to God and on earth peace, Pastor Kris + Hanging of the Greens Thank You to Pat Bunting for designing and organizing the decorations in the sanctuary, Gail Block for designing and organizing the decorations in fellowship hall and fireplace room, and Connie Reidel for managing the kitchen and the brunch with the Board of Deacons. Ivanhoe News 1

Board of Deacons Ken Flaks/Ken Kelting, Co-Chairs The Board of Deacons broke with tradition and held their November 1 st meeting an hour early, at 6:00 pm, so that board members could get home in time to see the Chicago Cubs beat Cleveland 9-3 in Game 6, and then win the World Series the next evening by downing the Tribe 8-7! Ivanhoe Church Ornament Celebrate the 160 th Anniversary of our Sanctuary with a beautiful keepsake - $15 each Available after worship December 11 th or contact the church office. By the time you read this, the greens should have been hung in the sanctuary and hopefully the 30 needy children on a list from Avon Township will have been claimed by members purchasing their Christmas gifts. If you are buying for someone on the list, be sure to have your gift wrapped and to the church on or before December 18. The final sittings for our new Church Photo Directory will also have taken place to accommodate our many new members. Look for that new directory to be available in the near future. We head into the beginning of the new church year with many activities coming up in December. The annual Christmas Pageant (during the service) and Yule Fest (afterward in the fellowship hall) are scheduled for Dec. 18. The Longest Night service will be at 7:00 pm on Dec. 20, followed by the Christmas Eve service at 8:00 pm on Dec. 24 and our usual Sunday morning service on Christmas Day. The date for the annual Caroling outing is December 11 th. Please consider helping out with the stockings for the Night Ministry by contributing packs of new white tube socks, gift cards, and other needed items. Due December 4 th. Bob Wisbey is once again spearheading this effort; please see him with any questions. For additional information on these activities, speak to any member of the Board of Deacons. If you have upcoming activities you would like to get the word out for, please contact the church office by phone or email at uccivanhoe@gmail.com to coordinate with Kathy Riehle. Ivanhoe News 2

Holiday Eating Survival Strategies Adopt a realistic attitude. The holidays can be tough, but aim to maintain weight & not lose weight during this time Go to celebrations and enjoy yourself! However, keep your end goal in mind when making food choices Moderation is the key Plan ahead, not going somewhere on an empty stomach can prevent over-indulging later Keep healthy snacks around Learn to say no thank-you Remember, tomorrow is always a new day Ivanhoe News 5
