The Spirit Holy Spirit Lutheran Church May 2017 EASTER CONTINUES! Pastor William J. Matlack pastor@spiritdrivenchurch.com The Easter Celebration continues! The season of Easter began on the day of Easter, April 16, and continues for 7 weeks. Throughout those 7 weeks we hear references to Christ s Resurrection. The Sundays are as follows: April 16: The Resurrection of our Lord (Easter Sunday) (John 20:1-18) April 23: The 2 nd Sunday of Easter (Thomas - John 20:19-31) April 30: The 3 rd Sunday of Easter (The Road to Emmaus - Luke 24:13-35) May 7: The 4 th Sunday of Easter (The Good Shepherd - John 10:1-10) May 14: The 5 th Sunday of Easter (Mother s Day) (Jesus Comforts his Disciples - John 14:1-14) May 21: The 6 th Sunday of Easter (Promise of the Holy Spirit - John 14:15-21) May 28: Ascension Celebration (Luke 24:44-53)) June 4: Pentecost Sunday (The conclusion of the Easter Season) (Acts 2:1-21, John 7:37-39) The Easter Season is the most Holy Season of the Church Year! We continue to remember our Lord's Resurrection every Sunday of the Year, but in Easter we celebrate more festively. From Wikipedia: Eastertide is the period of fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday. It is celebrated as a single joyful feast, indeed as the "great Lord's Day". Each Sunday of the season is treated as a Sunday of Easter, and, after the Sunday of the Resurrection, they are named Second Sunday of Easter, Third Sunday of Easter, etc. up to the Seventh Sunday of Easter, while the whole fifty-day period concludes with Pentecost Sunday. Easter Sunday and Pentecost correspond to pre-existing Jewish feasts: The first day of Pesach (פסח) and the holiday of Shavu'ot.(שבועות) In the Jewish tradition, the 49 days between these holidays are known. (ספירת העומר) as Counting of the Omer The solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is celebrated on the fortieth day of Eastertide (a Thursday). The nine days from that feast until the Saturday before Pentecost (inclusive) are days of preparation for the Holy Spirit the Paraclete, which inspired the form of prayer called a novena. May this Joyous Season continue to be celebrated in our hearts, minds and spirits!

Holy Spirit: A Praying Community As you pray throughout your days include... May 2017 (May 1) Philip and James, apostles - We pray the stories of the disciples who heard Jesus invitation and followed will inspire us to follow and serve too, trusting that God will put our unique abilities, interests and traits to work for the mission of the church and the sake of the world. We remember in our prayers the Southeast Michigan synod assembly that the Spirit will strengthen, guide and excite their leaders and members for God s work and witness in the world. We turn to God in prayer, thankful and relieved that in God we have a loving, attentive shepherd who guides us day and night through life s difficulties, complexities and threats. (May 14) Mother s Day - We ask God to strengthen and be with all mothers biological, adoptive, foster and surrogate in the daily joys and challenges of parenting, passing on the faith, protecting and guiding their children throughout life. Give thanks to God for being patient, concerned and persistent with us when doubts, questions and even disbelief tug at us. Jesus is the cornerstone and foundation of our faith, church and life. We pray we are faithful, willing servants of the church and witnesses to the world, drawing on the strength and spirit of Jesus Christ for the work of sharing the good news and serving our neighbor. Jesus is the cornerstone and foundation of our faith, church and life. We pray we are faithful, willing servants of the church and witnesses to the world, drawing on the strength and spirit of Jesus Christ for the work of sharing the good news and serving our neighbor. Ups and downs, problems, tragedies and ordeals are part of the fabric of human life. Pray for God s reassurance and renewing Spirit in every circumstance and life experience and that we are present and caring companions for people who hunger for hope, comfort, assistance, encouragement or simply friendship. Pray for courage and boldness of faith and conscience to do good in the world, stand for justice and peace, and live by Jesus example, even in the face of criticism, social pressure or ridicule. Memorial Day - On this day, we remember and give thanks for men and women who have served in the armed forces and sacrificed their lives for ideals of justice, peace, freedom and well-being for our country, other nations and people who suffer oppression and injustice in the world. For health and healing and for those who grieve. For Bishop Kreiss, the Southeast Michigan Synod staff, the HSLC congregation and Pastor Bill Matlack.
