Dr. L.K. Pendleton, Pastor 6 Moving dimensionally in Christ, Church and Community When I was a toddler, my mom played Tetris so much that the song is permanently engrained in my memory. Not surprisingly, she got really good at it! The premise of the game is to fit differently shaped blocks together like puzzle pieces to build higher while conserving a limited amount of space. The more space you save, the more you level up. Most games progress in this fashion; life not being any different. However, sometimes we remain stuck at the same level unable to progress. We exist in a society that throws many road-blocks our way. Sometimes we discover how to detour and sometimes we stay at the same place, pushing the same sequence of buttons and remaining at the same level. Many of history's occurrences are repeating themselves in my lifetime. As the old adage states, Those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it. How true this is. There is a whole new generation that can't even relate to the cultural and socio-economic struggles of our ancestors. The proof is in the media and everyday life. Recently, there has been an increase in the detainment and deaths of young African Americans. Trayvon Martin was killed by a security guard sworn to protect! Martin's early departure from this side of life seems to have catalyzed a whole slew of racerelated executions across the United States. Michael Brown s senseless killing over selling cigarettes was a case of police brutality and flawed justice. As a young African American woman who believes in the salvific work of Jesus Christ, I cannot help but ask where the church is in all of this? Didn t Jesus command us to care for the disinherited and the downtrodden? The church has minimized its involvement in social justice issues and has become relaxed about caring for the very people Jesus loved and gave His life to redeem. The church can chant with hunger and thirst money cometh but are silenced when it s time to sing reach out and touch somebody s hand! As I view the church today from a youthful lens, I deduce that she is too wrapped up in her own social club agenda to realize that she is losing touch with the social angst present in the real world. And, if this attitude of narcissism continues, my generation will be absent from her pews, roles and history. Many of my peers view the church as a sham because of the duplicity we see emanating from people who profess Christianity. We as the church do not uphold even the most basic commandments to put no other God before the God of Abraham, and to love one another inexplicably. There is a generation longing to know the unadulterated truth and to be healed from the disease and sickness that is essentially evil in the crafty disguise of selfgratification and individualism. I challenge the church to return to the teaching of Jesus Christ and making a difference in this world. True and effectual change cannot be made unless it is a change in the Spirit. I pray thy kingdom come thy will be done Lord God Almighty! Until, I will see you on the next level. Amber Pendleton

Dr. Sylvester McRae, M.D. The area of robotic surgery is growing. Dr. Sylvester McRae of St. Francis OBGYN in Columbus, Georgia has be come the first in this area to perform a full hysterectomy by using the Single Site Robotic method. The FDA had already approved the use of the procedure for gall bladder surgeries, now the area has opened up for gynecologist to expand their field. Using the Da Vinci Robotics, doctors can perform a full hysterectomy by going through the belly button. Under the previous robotics method three to four incisions would be made. Patients can go back to work in a week compared to the six to eight weeks with conventional surgery. Some Single Site patients develop a small umbilical hernia, which Dr. McRae says can be corrected. The word faithful is an adequate description of Dr. McRae s presence and spirit at our church. He is faithful to the call of Christ to go and make disciples. He has served The Road UMC in several capacities for 18 years. He is currently the chair of our Stewardship Team, a member of the Sunday School, the Marriage ministry, Church Council, and United Methodist Men. He is always willing to assist with gentle repose whenever he is needed. Dr. McRae is married to Rose McRae and together they have three children; Sylvester, Kevin, and Kimberly. Continued blessings to Dr. Sylvester McRae as he continues to shine the light of Christ in our church, community, and world. THE ROAD UMC WORSHIP THE LORD WITH GLADNESS 2014 MUSIC MINISTRY WORKSHOP Psalm 100:2 Principal Paula Shaw-Powell Congratulations to Paula Shaw-Powell, Principal of Double Churches Elementary School. Mrs. Shaw-Powell has been selected as a Georgia PTA Outstanding Principal. She was recognized for her accomplishments, leadership and support of PTA July 12, 2014 at the Georgia PTA Awards Banquet at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta. She joined MCSD as a teacher at Clubview in August 1989. She also taught at Dimon Elementary, served as shared Assistant Principal at Fox and River Road, and served as an Elementary Math & Science Instructional Specialist before becoming principal at Double Churches Elementary in 2005. Principal Powell has been a committed member of The Road UMC for over 18 years. The word joy describes this exuberant woman of God. She has an infectious spirit that will warm your heart and tickle your funny bone. She is selfless and with total willingness serves the ministry of God at The Road UMC. She has served the Education ministry of the church with rapt attention, she is President of our United Methodist Women s unit and sings with the choir. She is married to Mike Powell and they have one son, Marlovon Powell.
