TALLAHASSEE ELKS LODGE #937 BENEVOLENT AND PROTECTIVE ORDER OF ELKS ANTLERS FEBRUARY 2011 WORDS FROM THE ER S STATION (I didn t get a desk) They said it couldn t be done; but thanks to all of you who bought tickets and came out for New Year s Eve, the end-ofyear Dinner & Dance was a success. Everyone who attended had a wonderful time. I was happily surprised at the number of people still at the Lodge for the ringing in of the new year. A very special thank you to Regina & Yayo for decorating, Carina and Bob for preparing the meal, Sue for working the door, Carolyn for plating every single dinner and Frank for helping serve and clean up. It was also most appreciated that Gary Radtke (from the band) and Pat (his wife) jumped in to help deliver dinners to the tables. I know there were more people who worked this event and I apologize for not naming you individually but thank you. One might think that things would have slowed down in January. They did not. We had the Oldies but Goodies night in the dining room and Lounge. What a hoot that was. I shall not mention it by name but the evening even included a strawberry colored liquid of which some of you may not have such fond memories. Personally, I thought the dessert shooters stole the show- what a delicious variety. If you have not attended one of the themed dinners in the dining room, you are not taking full advantage of your dues. Actually, if you do not eat in the dining room regularly you are missing out on one of the best benefits if your membership. Also in January, we had the State President s visit. What a weekend that was. If you did not participate, you really did miss one of the best parts of Elkdom. Jim Hurst, FSEA President, is a wonderful person and it is really inspiring to hear him speak; as it was all of the guest speakers. North District Vice President, Carl Ledig, and wife Dolly (plus family and crew) did an incredible job rolling out the red carpet for our honored guests. The ballroom, lounge, foyer and even the ladies rooms never looked better. I cannot tell you how proud I was of the Elks and Elketts of Lodge #937 that helped make the visit, the hospitality room and especially the banquet a resounding success. I would like to thank Carl for having Jim and his entourage eat ALL of their meals at the Lodge. In other visits, the group is taken to outside eateries. I told Jim (we are on a first name basis now) on Sunday that Hogie (our Club Manager) has offered a standing invitation for him to visit every couple of months because he likes what happens around the place in preparation for such a visit. Now one might think that the holidays are over, but if you read the Antlers, you will see the feasting continues. We have several, very special dinners coming up. So mark your calendars to come to the Lodge; and if you do not receive e- mail notices of upcoming events, please contact me so I can get you on the list (Tracey.Austin937@yahoo.com). I was so excited about sharing the recent events, I did not have space to tell you what I learned in the lounge tonight: From the AARP magazine, Bonifide entries in the world s top English dictionaries. ELK HAPPENINGS LODGE MEETING ON FEBRUARY 1ST AT 8 PM **NOTE** The appreciation dinner has been postponed ** CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NORTH DISTRICT RITUAL WINNERS! Our Lodge was judged in the Initiatory Ritual Competition on January 22 nd. Warrington Lodge also traveled to Tallahassee to compete for the Northwest District. Neither team had any other Lodges in their Districts compete; only nine Districts will be sending teams to State. This is very sad for Elkdom. While both teams should be very proud of their accomplishments, Tallahassee was the higher scoring team. Team members were privileged to be awarded individual, first place plaques by FSEA President James Hurst at his Banquet that evening. So Tallahassee, Now that you won the North District Competition, what are you going to do? We re going to Disney World! The State contest will be held in May during the Yearly Convention at the Disney Coronado Resort in Orlando. Congratulations also go to Tracey Austin, Bob Thorburn (ERs and Leading Knights) and Betty Irvin (open class) for competing in the 11:00 Toast. The competition was very close but Tracey will be representing the North District at State. SPRUCING UP THE LODGE In January, the lodge installed new carpet in the lounge and lounge foyer. Additionally, new vertical blinds have been installed on the wall with all the windows in the dining room. The parking lot has been restriped so you now can choose a space in which to park, rather than having to guess where to leave your car. Special thanks to the PERs for taking on the task of striping and thanks also to Rick Peckham who grabbed a big bucket of paint and a fast roller to do the south portion of the lot. The lodge has a considerable amount of decorations in anticipation of Mardi Gras. While we do not expect to celebrate at the lodge, the purple, gold, and green motif adds a great deal of color to many of the rooms. Thank you, Dolly and Carl Ledig for sharing those decorations with us.

If you are interested in attending, put the event on your calendar. WANT TO HAVE SOME FUN? On Saturday and Sunday, March 5th and 6th, our Lodge will be the only food vendor for the Natural Bridge Historical Society s reenactment of the Battle of Natural Bridge. This is our second year participating in the reenactment. Last year we had a lot of fun doing this and we are really looking forward to having a great time this year! The weekend at Natural Bridge is a great opportunity for Community exposure, to help another non-profit Organization and, hopefully, provide a little income for the Lodge. Nanci Longman is the volunteer coordinator for this event. She is in the process of scheduling several crews so that no one person has to work until he or she keels over! Food service will be from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, and from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. This will be the first year that we will be offering breakfast to the participants of the reenactment. REPAIR OF THE SIGN OUT FRONT You may have noticed that our sign out front has a couple holes from vandalism in the sign face that you see when driving south on Magnolia. The cost to repair the sign is just about the same as our insurance deductible so we have been waiting till we had some extra bucks to replace the sign face. The company who repairs our sign in times of distress tells us they have a gently used sign face that they will donate to us to replace the one side that is damaged and we only have to pay the labor cost. We have given The Sign Company on South Adams Street the go ahead to take care of that issue. We appreciate their generosity! PER NIGHT IN FEBRUARY While the Elk appreciation dinner may have been postponed, on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, the Past Exalted Rulers will sit in the chairs to conduct our regular Lodge meeting. Everyone looks forward to this evening as many of the PERs relate a story of what happened during their year. This is also the first night that Officer nominations for the Lodge year 2011-2012 will be accepted. GER MESSAGE: TIME TO ASSESS PROGRESS AS LODGE YEAR ENDS A Message from the Grand Exalted Ruler Hon. Michael F. Smith February brings us a number of opportunities in which we can make our surroundings a better place. Our Order celebrates its anniversary on the sixteenth, Presidents Day and, of course, Valentine s Day. Have your Lodges plan an event recognizing Presidents Day through your Americanism Committee. Invite your community to witness our dedication to our country. Make it a visible event and let the attendees know who we are and what we represent. On February 14 have your Lodge serve a Valentine s Day meal or host a reception and encourage your Members to bring their special person to be recognized. As the Lodge year is coming to an end, February allows us to evaluate our progress and push to attain the goals we may not have met at this point. It is time to be developing the Lodge budget for next year, along with the nomination of Officers. Our Order is going through some changes to improve and grow. Take the time to evaluate where your Lodge needs to be and fill the offices with the people you believe can achieve your objectives. Many opportunities will be presented at the National Convention, and you will need the leadership to direct the membership in order for your Lodge and our Order to advance. FSEA FEBRUARY QUARTERLY FEBRUARY 4-5, 2011 Make plans to attend the February Quarterly Meeting of the Florida Elks Association at the Florida Elks Youth Camp in Umatilla. This meeting will include a meeting of the Florida Elks Major Projects Committee which is a required to be attended by all officers of the FSEA, all District Deputies, all Exalted Rulers, & the 1 & 2 year member Lodge appointees to the Major Projects Committee. The highlight of this meeting is a visit by the Grand Exalted Ruler, this year Florida s own Michael Smith. Mike will be accompanied by his wife, Sandra, and they will be real comfortable at home in Florida in February. All Elks and their spouses/guests are invited to attend. A MESSAGE FROM THE FLORIDA STATE ELKS ASSOCIATION S STATE PRESIDENT My Fellow Elks, It seems as though our year as the FSEA State President is proceeding rapidly. As we approach February I would encourage all members to continue the generous donations to the Harry-Anna Trust Fund for support of our two Major State Projects. I wish to thank all the individual lodge and district fund raising efforts which will be taking place between now and the end of our fiscal year March 31 st. I also wish to commend PER Jim Larsen from the Manasota Lodge for his marathon run New Years Eve which resulted in over $5,000 accrued to the Trust Fund from donations and pledges. Harry-Anna State Chairman Ron Snow has recently sent letters to all Exalted Rulers, Trustees, and Secretaries suggesting that as many lodges as possible donate money on the occasion of our Major Projects Meeting taking place Saturday, February 5 th at the Youth Camp Quarterly Meeting. Many lodges or districts choose to give checks on that day, and GER Ruler Mike Smith will be attending and present to assist me in receiving any such donations. Nominations and elections of new lodge officers for 2011-2012 will be conducted during the month of February. I encourage all who aspire to such a position to take the opportunity to serve in that capacity and provide the leadership that is so essential to having a successful and productive lodge. I know such leadership is demanding, time consuming, and often a challenge. However, it can also give one a great sense of accomplishment, pride, and satisfaction in that you are helping your respective lodge and promoting the goals of Elkdom. And remember this thought: That Leader is best, that when the people s task is accomplished, and their work is done, the people will all say, We have done it ourselves. Fraternally, James E.
