Gary and Mylinda Baits will be returning to the U.S. this summer. Later this year, Mylinda will transition into a new role with International Ministries, working as a Regional Missionary with a special focus on ministries that mentor, empower and connect women in the prevention and eradication of Sue Hegarty has been reassigned to serve in San José, Costa Rica with the Baptist Federation and with human trafficking. Katie and Taku Longkumer have settled into their work--focusing on indigenous workers who are planting new churches in remote villages. They are providing pastoral care, bible study training and renewal opportunities for those who serve in very difficult situations, and are also serving as a resource to the Council of Baptist Churches in NE India. Please continue to lift up Sue and Katy, Gary and Mylinda, and Katie and Taku in prayer as they follow God s leading and begin new phases of their ministries. Page 2 Central Baptist News The August Inside This month I am using this space to officially introduce Rev. Jerry Phillips to you as our Parttime Interim Pastor. At the Quarterly Business meeting on July 18, the church voted to have Rev. Phillips fill this role. (Please contact the church office if you would like to see the details of this agreement.) The reality of our worship schedule each Sunday requires we have 2 pastors preaching each week as two of our services occur at the same time in 2 different locations. At the very least, that means we need some support with pulpit supply. But since we are also in a time of transition, it is good to have a gifted, experienced pastor who not only preaches well, but can provide some pastoral care and meet regularly with Josh and I. We have already enjoyed working with Jerry and look forward to more of the same in the coming months. Jerry will be working about 10 hours/week and preaching 2 Sundays each month. Many of you know Rev. Phillips, as he is also a member of Central Baptist Church. However, Jerry is often sought as interim pastor and has served several area churches in recent years. Because of that, he has not always Story been able to worship with us and we thought you might appreciate learning a little more about him. Gerald R. Phillips, sometimes known as Jerry, just passed the 59th anniversary of his ordination. He was born and raised in Roodhouse, IL and graduated from White Hall High School. After nearly becoming a career farmer, he felt the call to gospel ministry and began formal training for it. He graduated from William Jewell College, 1958, with a Bachelor of Arts degree and then attended two Southern Baptist seminaries, Midwestern and Southwestern (Ft. Worth, TX) and graduated in1966 with a Masters of Divinity degree. Jerry later received a year of Clinical Pastoral Education training through hospitals in Rockford and Chicago. Early in his ministry he served 4 Southern Baptist Churches. Jerry began serving American Baptist Churches in 1979, first doing short interim work at Ashland and Winchester. Beginning in late 1979 he started serving at the First Baptist Church, Roodhouse, and was there for a little more than 20 years before "retiring." Since officially retiring he has served as interim pastor eight times at Introducing We are so happy Lynn and Diane Martin have joined our CBC church family!. Lynn and Diane have 3 sons and 4 grandchildren. Prior to their retirement, Lynn was in church leadership and worked for the State of Illinois Department of Human Services. Diane was a pharmacist at St. John s. They enjoy participating in theater productions and spending time with family. Be sure to introduce yourself when you seen them in service. Welcome! 2012 a total of 5 churches, some of them twice. Jerry has also served as a member of the national American Baptist General Board and as a member of the board of International Ministries (8 years). Also served on the Minister and Missionaries Benefit Board (6 years). Have served in various positions of American Baptist Churches of the Great Rivers Region, and currently serving as Vice President for Personnel and chair of the Ministry of Staff Relations. Jerry also plays the piano, quite well, and occasionally allows us the pleasure of hearing him play, most recently at the Birthday Banquet this past March. Jerry and his very lovely wife, Della, just celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary. Jerry first moved to Springfield with his late wife, Louise, after he retired from FBC Roodhouse. She died in 2006 following a rugged two-year battle with cancer. Josh and I are excited about the ways we see God at work in our midst this summer and feel very blessed that Jerry will be serving with us in the coming months. Mary Ellen

So far, the North American church largely has responded with heavy infusions of denial, says Reggie McNeal in his book entitled The Present Future Six Tough Questions for the Church. This is a must read and must study book for Central Baptist Church and for all churches. The way we should do church is much different now than what is used to be. I highly recommend that you read this book and talk about it in your Sunday School class or small group. Church staff can provide teaching aids. Perhaps you will recall the early 1960s animated TV series featuring this feisty crime fighter; or McGruff the Crime Dog. Underdog and McGruff are reminders that safety is important. We take seriously our responsibility to the children in our daycare, those that work in our building or enter our doors during the week. During August our door security system will be updated. It will provide improved management of the door devices and levels of access. Individuals requiring regu- lar access to our building will receive new door devices. The camera lenses will also be replaced to ensure there is clear view of those ringing the buzzer. If you have building access needs let the church office know.
Page 4 Central Baptist News August 2012 Thank You!...To everyone who volunteered in downtown Springfield as part of the Springfield July 4th Celebration. Our volunteers passed out cold drinking water, assisted the Springfield Jaycees in passing out 1,000 ice cream cups and provided first-aid for minor scrapes and abrasions. (As one of our professional nurses on scene, Faith Heikes was also the first responder on scene to assist a lady who had a heat stroke and was eventually transported to the hospital by ambulance). Thank you, all, for sharing your time and love with the community....from Reg Mills Dear friends, Judi and I write to again thank you. We are grateful to God for the fifteen years we were able to serve alongside you. Thank you for inviting us into the sacred places of your lives, for all of the ways you enriched our lives, and for the many life experiences God allowed us to share. We are especially thankful for the wonderful ways you gifted us in my final weeks as your pastor. Your kind words of affirmation and appreciation touched us deeply. Your financial gifts and other gifts were generous beyond expectation. Judi and I look forward to that fabulous weekend at the Cloran Mansion Bed and Breakfast in Galena, when the weather is cooler. Thank you! The Sunday worship celebration and subsequent reception on May 6, 2012, were warm, wonderful, and unique. The Wednesday Night Dinner on May 9th, with fishing games to play with grandchildren, was just delightful. These times with you, and the many individual conversations they afforded, left us with memories we will continue to treasure. Thank you! Most of you know that we are remaining in Springfield and plan to one day rejoin the life of Central. However, our return will be as members serving in support and under the leadership of your pastors. The Covenant of Separation which you recently received contains healthy guidelines for a former pastor to return to his or her previous church in a new role. Thank you for living by those guidelines and honoring our doing the same. Judi and I miss you all but we are pleased that the Lord has given us this season of life to refresh and renew. We think of you often and lift you in prayer. We know that you have wonderful leadership in place, both lay and clergy, and through them God is leading you into a future where He is already at work. Page 5 Central Baptist News August 2012 July Mystery Member The winner is Sophia Ashebir! Our mystery member in July was Mary Coleman. Even though Mary was born in Springfield, she spent most of her life in Greenview, Illinois. Mary s college major was Meteorology, but she has never worked in that field. She has worked in accounting for 14 years. Mary has one son, Evan, of whom she is very proud. Mary says she was not raised in church, but went to church with a high school boyfriend and met Christ at 1st Baptist Church in Greenview and was baptized at age 16. Today Mary s favorite scripture is Psalm 23. Mary currently serves Central as the church treasurer. Mary generally attends the 11 am service at the Springfield location. Thanks for playing! Most of our Rainbow class will be graduating ( August 17) and going off to Kindergarten. Many of the children still at Children s House will be moving up to the next class. The Summer Program Kids will be heading back to school. The children are excited, a little afraid and sad all at the same time. The parents can t believe that their children are already big enough to even go to school or up to the next classroom. How could they have possibly grown up so fast? All of us at Children s House are sad to see our little ones leave us. Many of the graduates have been with us since they were infants and we have become quite attached to them. We are consoled by the fact that they are definitely ready for the next level of school. We hope they come back to stay with us for the next year s summer program.
