We are a progressive community that welcomes all people regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, or religion. 1

Please advise one of the Sidespersons if you would like Communion brought to you in the pew. If necessary, you are welcome to sit for those parts of the liturgy when it is normal to stand. REFLECTION We rejoice in the gifts of healing and wholeness that we receive daily from God s hand. Although our offering of praise and thanksgiving may not always flow freely, nevertheless such a response shapes our discipleship. We therefore seek to respond with generosity to our relationship with God and others. COLLECT OF THE DAY O God, you have made heaven and earth and all that is good: help us to delight in simple things and to rejoice always in the richness of your bounty; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the Book of the prophet Jeremiah 29:1, 4 7 These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. A short silence is observed. Reader All For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. PSALM 66:1 11 At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalm is recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon. At the 9:00am Eucharist the following antiphon and setting of the Psalm is used. At the 11:00am Eucharist a Book of Common Prayer setting of the Psalm is sung by the Choir. 2

Response Chants: 9am D. Drury; 11am W. Parratt O shout with joy to God, all the earth: sing to the honour of his name, and give him glory as his praise. Say to God How fearful are your works: because of your great might your enemies shall cower before you. All the earth shall worship you: and sing to you, and sing praises to your name. Come then and see what God has done: how terrible are his dealings with the children of Adam. He turned the sea into dry land, they crossed the river on foot: then were we joyful because of him. By his power he rules for ever, his eyes keep watch on the nations: and rebels shall never rise against him. O bless our God, you peoples: and cause his praises to resound, Who has held our souls in life: who has not suffered our feet to slip. For you have proved us, O God: you have tried us as silver is tried. You brought us into the net: you laid sharp torment on our loins. You let our enemies ride over our heads, we went through fire and water: but you brought us out into a place of liberty. Response SECOND READING A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy 2:8-15 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful for he cannot deny himself. Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they are to avoid wrangling 3

over words, which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. A short silence is observed. Reader All For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. We now sing the Gradual Hymn: No. 337. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader. Reader/All Cantor All Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! For all things give thanks to God, because this is what he expects of you in Christ Jesus. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL READING LUKE 17:11 19 Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Luke. All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us! When he saw them, he said to them, Go and show yourselves to the priests. And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner? Then he said to the Samaritan, Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well. Deacon All For the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. COMMUNION Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. 4

COMMUNION MOTETS 9AM MOTET In God, my faithful God, I trust when dark my road; Tho many woes o ertake me, Yet he will not forsake me. His love it is doth send them And when tis nest, will end them. Sigismund Weingartner, 1607; tr. 11AM MOTET Words: Roman Breviary, tr. Jean Racine (1639-1699) Music: Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) So be it, then I say With all my heart each day. We, too, dear Lord, adore thee, We sing for joy before thee. Guide us while here we wander, Until we praise thee yonder. Lay upon us the fire of Thy mighty grace, That all hell may flee the sound of Thy voice; Banish the slumber of a languishing soul, Which makes it forgetful of Thy laws! O Christ, be merciful to Thy faithful people Assembled here to praise Thee; Receive the songs they offer to Thy immortal glory; May they return laden with Thy gifts. 2016 SMITH LECTURE: THE THIN RED LINE Thursday 20 October 6pm drinks for 7pm lecture Doltone House, Darling Island North Wharf, 48 Pirrama Road, Pyrmont. $40pp Register by Friday 14 October Online at: http://smithlecture.org/content/2016-lecture-thin-red-line Teenagers of today face dramatically increased risks compared to their parents generation - there is now a thin red line between having fun and suffering the consequences of substance abuse, depression, suicide, feelings of worthlessness, one-punch violence, brain-damaging binge drinking, addiction to degrading pornography and other destructive behaviour. Boys lack powerful male role models and girls often feel unattractive, lack confidence and exhibit reduced capacity for genuine intimacy in relationships with lifelong consequences. Dr Bruce Robinson, who has written a number of best-selling fathering books and who founded the award-winning Fathering Project at the University of Western Australia, talks about simple but powerful strategies that have been demonstrated to be effective at reducing these problems. These issues are of importance to anyone who cares about children and about the future of our society. The strategies he describes represent best practice today and they will change the future of our sons and daughters. Interestingly, he has since found that most of these ideas were actually written in the Bible thousands of years ago. He wonders why he, and many in society, have missed seeing them for so long and what else we might be missing. 10
