PENTECOST 21 Only God s presence brings true contentment.

PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH October 14, 2018 WELCOME TO WORSHIP We love that you are here today! The library in the back serves as a quiet room for parents with children and still enables you to participate in the service. Restrooms are in the hallway to the right and also across the hall on the right side, opposite the school office. TODAY S FOCUS If only I had more money! Do we seek salvation in the form of money? The Scripture readings today show us two examples of individuals who came to spiritual ruin because of their love for money. Hebrews 13 reminds us that only God s presence brings true contentment. PLEASE RESPECT OUR PRACTICE OF CLOSE COMMUNION Christ says the Sacrament is an expression of unity (1 Co 10:16-17). We WANT to be unified with you on the basis of Christ and His doctrine! Honesty compels us to ask you to WAIT before communing with us: 1) until you ve had a chance to find out what we teach; 2) until you make your unity with us evident by membership at Peace. Regular classes are conducted for this purpose (837-5346). WELS & ELS guests please sign a Connection Card and give it to an usher before communing. Thank you. YOU CAN MAKE A ONE-TIME OFFERING ON YOUR PHONE Send a text message to (608)480-1612 with the amount you would like to contribute (example: 25). Within a few seconds, you ll be sent a text with a link to register. Click on the link and enter your name (the name on your debit card) and debit or card information. Once your registration is complete, you will receive a text verification and a receipt of your donation via email. For future giving, send a text with the amount you wish to give, and it will process automatically. Thank you for your support of Peace s ministry. To prepare for the Lord s Supper, you may wish to read page 156 in the front portion of the red hymnal.

DIVINE SERVICE SUNDAY SCHOOL PREK TO GRADE 3 God Is So Good GATHERING RITE ON THE WORD OF GOD 1 PLEASE STAND M: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me. 1 This Gathering Rite brings us together in a common recognition of the importance of God s Word for our lives. God s Word is our life (Deuteronomy 32:47). Without God s Word we have no light of dawn (Isaiah 8:20).

I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! (Psalm 119:97-99,103) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16,17) Yet so often we have despised God s Word and failed to gladly hear and learn it. For this and all our sins, we bow before God and humbly ask his forgiveness. Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature 2 sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. 2 This phrase, by nature, expresses an important Bible truth. We are not naturally good or partly good or naturally neutral. We are by nature sinful (Psalm 51:5; Ephesians 2:1; Romans 3:10-12). If we are to be saved at all, it cannot depend in any way on anything in us (Romans 9:16). It has to depend totally on Jesus. This truth is rejected by most of American religiosity today.

God gave his Word so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name (John 20:31). The Scriptures testify about Jesus, who lived a perfect life for you, died on the cross to pay for all your sins, and rose again to assure you of your salvation. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins 3 in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 3 Notice how freely forgiveness is announced to you without any conditions! Jesus has given your pastor the authority to do this (John 20:23). In fact, the primary purpose of Lutheran worship is not for you to praise the Lord. It is for Him to announce to you His forgiveness and mercy.

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray Grant, O merciful Lord, to your faithful people pardon and peace that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. PLEASE BE SEATED THE WORD 4 FIRST LESSON 2 Kings 5:14-27 PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 37 Congregation sings the bolded lines and the refrain Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. 4 With our sins forgiven and our relationship with God restored, our dialog with God is ready to continue. He speaks to us and we respond to Him. Jesus is always the focus and center of it all.

Refrain Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Refrain I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever. For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain SECOND LESSON Hebrews 13:1-6

VERSE OF THE DAY 5 M: Alleluia. We are God s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. Alleluia. (Ephesians 2:10) PLEASE STAND GOSPEL Mark 10:17-27 After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: 6 After the Gospel, the congregation sings: 5 The Verse of the Day sets before us an important Bible passage related to today s emphasis. It serves as a way for us to respond to God s message in the Scripture readings. There is a historic Verse of the Day for every Sunday of the year, as each Sunday is assigned its own emphasis. 6 Why do we stand? Why do we sing? Imagine you re at a Veteran s Day parade. You stand and applaud the war heroes as they march past. In a similar way, we stand and cheer for our Savior as He comes to us in the Gospel Lesson. The four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) are the four biographies of Jesus earthly life & ministry.

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PLEASE BE SEATED

OFFERING Visitors need not feel obliged to participate in this offering. We do ask you to fill out a Connection Card from the chair pocket in front of you and drop it in the offering plate or give it to an usher. Thank you! To give a one-time offering via text, please see the front page of this worship folder. Members of Peace have committed themselves to financially supporting the ministry of Peace. They consider their offering to be a deliberate act of worshiping God. PLEASE STAND WHEN PRESIDER INDICATES PRAYER OF THE CHURCH As Jesus ministered to the young man in the Gospel Lesson today, let us pray for the young people of our congregation (and we also pray for ). Heavenly Father, you have gathered people of all ages into the communion of saints. Today we thank you especially for the gift of young people to your Church. We ask that you keep them in your care. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Protect them from the perils and temptations common to youth. Help them resist the pressure to engage in godless and immoral activity. When they become confused, show them the way. When they hurt, bind up their wounds. When they fail, restore them according to your mercy and keep the cross of Christ before their eyes. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Bless them with good friends, competent teachers, faithful ministers, caring parents, supportive homes, and life-enriching experiences. According to your wisdom, spare them from the perils of unexpected tragedy, severe illness, violent crime, a broken home, or an untimely death. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Be with our young people as they continue to mature. Teach them the value of honest labor and faithful stewardship. Guide and direct them as they prepare for their life s vocations. Remind them that their highest joy is found in using talents and abilities in service to you. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

To you, our Father, we also pray for Special prayers Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. These petitions and all other things we need for our physical and eternal well-being we ask you with the prayer that Jesus has taught us LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

THE SACRAMENT PREFACE The Lord be with you. 7 Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks 8, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who promised that wherever two or three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd his flock till he comes again in glory. 9 Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: 7 This greeting marks a new service, so to speak. The first portion was the Service of the Word. This portion is the Service of the Sacrament. All these ancient introductory words & phrases help to highlight, celebrate and bring attention to the Sacrament. 8 We give thanks for this Sacrament. The Bible calls the Sacrament the Cup of Thanksgiving (1 Corinthians 10:16). Based on the Greek word for thanksgiving it is also called the Eucharist. 9 This middle sentence or phrase gives us a reason we are thankful. It also ties our observance to the season/day of the Church calendar we are observing. Christ lives and moves among His people. The Church calendar emphasizes this truth.

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY WORDS OF INSTITUTION Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.

The peace of the Lord be with you always. O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD PLEASE BE SEATED

PEACE TEENS EVENT TODAY All high schoolers of Peace (9 th -12 th grade) are encouraged to stay after the 10:30 service today for lunch and a presentation on the topic of suicide. It will be presented by Jonathan Schultz, a professional counselor with 20 years experience, as well as a WELS member and Lakeside dad. BIBLE STUDY FOR ADULTS BETWEEN SERVICES After the 8:00 service we enjoy fellowship & refreshments until 9:30. Bible study for adults takes place right here in the worship space 9:30-10:10. The Sunday School children are dismissed from Sunday School at 10:15. NEED A ROUTINE Routines are not always bad. It s not always bad if even a spiritual thing becomes routine. Sometimes the best way to maintain a prayer/devotional life is to create a routine. Here s simple idea before you fall asleep at night read a psalm and say the Lord s Prayer. (Or at the breakfast/supper table or on your lunch break, etc.) Keep doing it long enough and it becomes routine. INVITE-A-FRIEND SUNDAY Who can you invite? The services on Sunday, November 4, are being designed specifically as a day for inviting non-member friends/relatives. We will have fellowship time between services with extended refreshments, but no Bible study. Could you invite one person to this Sunday?

The Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost First Lesson 2 Kings 5:14-27 14 So he went down and dipped in the Jordan seven times, just as the man of God had said. Then his flesh was restored like the flesh of a small child, and he was clean. 15 Then he and his whole escort went back to the man of God. He stood in front of Elisha and said, To be sure, now I know that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. Now accept a gift from your servant. 16 But Elisha said, As surely as the LORD lives, in whose presence I stand, I will not take anything. Even though Na'aman urged him to accept something, he refused. 17 Then Na'aman said, If you do not want anything, please give me, your servant, as much dirt as two donkeys can carry, for your servant will never again burn incense or sacrifice to other gods, but only to the LORD. 18 But may the LORD forgive your servant this one thing: When my master goes into the house of Rimmon to bow down there and he supports himself on my arm, then I too have to bow down in the house of Rimmon. When I bow down in the house of Rimmon, may the LORD forgive your servant this one thing. 19 Then Elisha said to him, Go in peace. When Na'aman had gone some distance from him, 20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, My master was too easy on this Aramean, Na'aman, when he did not accept anything that he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him. 21 So Gehazi chased after Na'aman. When Na'aman saw him running after him, he got down from his chariot to meet him. He said, Is everything all right? 22 Then Gehazi said, Yes, everything is all right. My master sent me to say, Look, just now two young men from the hill country of Ephraim, from the sons of the prophets, have come to me. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothing. 23 Na'aman said, Certainly! Take two talents! He urged Gehazi and tied up the two talents of silver in two bags with the two sets of clothing. Then Na'aman gave them to his two servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi. 24 When he came to the hill, he took the gifts from them. Then he hid them in the house and sent the men back, so they left. 25 Then he went in and attended his master. Elisha said to him, Where were you, Gehazi? Gehazi said, Your servant didn t go anywhere.

26 Then Elisha said to him, Didn t my heart go along when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to take silver, or to accept clothes or olive groves or vineyards or sheep or cattle or male and female servants? 27 Na'aman s leprosy will cling to you and to your descendants forever. Then Gehazi went out from his presence, leprous like snow. Second Lesson Hebrews 13:1 6 Continue to show brotherly love. 2 Do not fail to show love to strangers, for by doing this some have welcomed angels without realizing it. 3 Remember those in prison, as if you were fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated, as if you yourselves were also suffering bodily. 4 Marriage is to be held in honor by all, and the marriage bed is to be kept undefiled, for God will judge sexually immoral people and adulterers. 5 Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have. For God has said: I will never leave you, and I will never forsake you. 6 So then we say with confidence: The Lord is my helper, and I will not be afraid. What will man do to me? Gospel Mark 10:17 27 17 As Jesus was setting out on a journey, one man ran up to him and knelt in front of him. He asked, Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 18 Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good except one God. 19 You know the commandments. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony. You shall not defraud. Honor your father and mother. 20 The man replied, Teacher, I have kept all these since I was a child. 21 Jesus looked at him, loved him, and said to him, One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. 22 When he heard this, he looked sad and went away grieving, because he had great wealth. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus told them again, Children, how hard it is for those who trust in their riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich

man to enter the kingdom of God. 26 They were even more astonished and said to one another, Who then can be saved? 27 Jesus looked at them and said, For people, it is impossible, but not for God, because all things are possible for God.
