Worship 11:00 a.m., Sanctuary (Please turn off all cell phones & pagers) Children s Ministry, 10:45 a.m.: City Kids Worship and Open Door Teen Café begin just before the morning worship service. See inside of bulletin for more information. Prelude Psalm Prelude Set 1, No. 1, Opus 32 Herbert Howells Kemp Smeal, organ Call to Worship Leif Lind I lift up my eyes to the hills where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. The Lord will keep you from all harm he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Ps. 121 Hymn of Praise Jesus Shall Reign No. 227 Greetings & Prayers of the Congregation (Please remain standing for prayer) Doug Schultz Prayer Response Hear our prayer, O Lord, hear our prayer, O Lord, (No. 684) Incline thine ear to us, and grant us thy peace. Anthem Three Shaker Tunes Shawn Kirchner Donald Brinegar, director; Allen Andrews, piano Scripture Reading 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 Kathie Glennie For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate. Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things and the things that are not to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.

Sermon God s Non-Sense Leif Lind Call to Offering Arleene Chow Offertory No Time arr. Susan Brumfield Traditional Camp Meeting Song Donald Brinegar, director; Allen Andrews, piano "Rise, oh fathers (mothers), rise, let s go meet em in the skies, we will hear the angels singing in that morning. Oh I really do believe that just before the end of time, we will hear the angels singing in that morning. No time to tarry here, no time to wait for you, no time to tarry here, for I m on my journey home " (Unless otherwise marked, loose offering goes to local church expense) Hymn of Response O For a World Miriam Therese Winter, 1987 Tune: Azmon (1) O for a world where everyone respects each other s ways, Where love is lived and all is done with justice and with praise. (2) O for a world where goods are shared and misery relieved, Where truth is spoken, children spared, equality achieved. (3) We welcome one world family and struggle with each choice That opens us to unity and gives our vision voice. (4) The poor are rich, the weak are strong, the foolish ones are wise. Tell all who mourn: outcasts belong, who perishes will rise. (5) O for a world preparing for God s glorious reign of peace, Where time and tears will be no more, and all but love will cease. Benediction (Please be seated after the benediction) Leif Lind Musical Response Postlude Tuba Tune in D Major C. S. Church Life All are welcome whoever you are, whatever your journey or background. God excludes no one, and neither do we. Today's flowers are given by Judson Ravi to honor Pastor Leif's daughter, Sonja Lind, after the completion of her doctoral degree. We welcome Sonja and Javier as they return to their "home state" of California, where Sonja is employed as the Education Abroad Coordinator at Cal State LA. Please keep choir members Arletta Brown and Daniel Chaney in your prayers, as they continue to face serious health issues. Daniel has moved to Colorado to be near family during his period of hospice care. Mail can be sent to Daniel c/o Michael Chaney, 3446 Quivas Street, Denver, CO 80211. Sheri Sinaga and Evie Salzmann also need prayers for healing, and Jay Lantry appreciates cards and phone calls (2441 N Altadena Dr, Altadena, CA 91001, phone 626-791-1549). We warmly welcome the Donald Brinegar Singers to our congregation today! The ensemble has been part of the Southern California community since 1997, being based at schools, churches, and recently at Pasadena City College. They currently practice at Glendale City Church, and will from time to time be performing at our Sabbath morning services. In April the ensemble will be giving a concert with the Pasadena Symphony, as they are the resident Chorus for the Symphony. Ensemble operating expenses are covered by their own members. Need help in pre-planning with funerals and cemetery property? Church member Mirta Marconi-Rothacher (818-220-6486) is qualified and licensed with Forest Lawn to assist you! Mass Convocation Choir seeking members: The Southern California Conference has scheduled a choir convocation on September 23 at the Greek Theater in L.A. The director, Fred Settle, is looking for experienced choral singers to be a part of this mass choir. If interested, please contact him directly at dir4jesus@gmail.com, including your full name, phone number and email, the part you sing, and which church you attend. Watching Children on Church Campus. The Conference HR and Adventist Risk Management have asked us to make sure that our congregation is aware that children under the age of 18 are under adult supervision at all times. This means providing childcare, or programming that insures children are just as involved as their parents while in an adult service or Bible study. They should not be permitted to run around in the building. Pastors and elders will be expected to enforce this if needed. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Children ages birth to 3 are required to have one parent stay with them throughout the City Kids worship experience. Older kids can be picked up from their classrooms once adult worship has concluded. Open Door will meet at 10:45 a.m. Open Door is a safe space for middle- and highschool students to talk about the issues facing them.
