SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY NOVEMBER 11, 2018 CONSECRATION SUNDAY GATHERING AROUND THE WORD 11:00 AM TOLLING OF THE BELL OPENING VOLUNTARY ADAGIO AND ALLEGRO FROM SONATA NO. 1 MICHEL CORRETTE BRENDA LUGER, FLUTE AND BRYAN LOHR, ORGAN WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. CHORAL INTROIT IN FLANDERS FIELDS ROGER EMERSON THE SANCTUARY CHOIR In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place, and in the sky, The larks, still bravely singing, fly, Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead; short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe! To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high! If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. This morning, we toll the bell 11 times in solidarity with others around the world to mark the end of World War I 100 years ago today, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, and in memory of the veterans of all wars on this Veterans Day. Consecration Sunday is the day we offer our financial commitment to support the work of Christ through the ministries of First Presbyterian Church. We will "consecrate" or set apart our pledges for this holy purpose.

* CALL TO WORSHIP We come to this place of prayer, for here we can bring our hopes and dreams, our hidden fears and the doubts we dare wear on our sleeves. We come to this place of grace, for here we learn compassion and joy, and discover how deeply we are loved. We come with these people called the church, to be blessed by the variety of gifts, to live as one for our God. * HYMN #397 O LOOK AND WONDER MIREN QUÉ BUENO CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION God, you know that our communion is not always visible to the world. Forgive us when we act as though we do not need each other; when we do not love one another; when we do not know and bear one another s burdens; when we fail to build each other up; and when we do not give ourselves willingly and joyfully to one another. Forgive us, and strengthen us so that we may live in the unity that you grant us, through Jesus Christ, our Lord... (Silence for personal prayer and reflection.) KYRIE ELEISON #103 COME NOW, O PRINCE OF PEACE O-SO-SO Come, hope of unity; make us one body. Come, O Lord Jesus; reconcile all people. WORDS OF ASSURANCE * RESPONSE #591 HALLE, HALLE, HALLELUJAH! HALLE, HALLE Halle, halle, hallelujah! Halle, halle, hallelujah! Halle, halle, hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! * PASSING OF THE PEACE The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. ANTHEM A COMMUNITY OF FAITH GRACE HAWTHORNE AND JOHN PURIFOY THE SANCTUARY CHOIR A community of faith, a community of love, a community that generates the love of God, a community that nourishes the spirit endlessly, all of this is what the church is meant to be. From a fellowship of minds comes a fellowship of souls and a fellowship that has the will to reach its goals. Yes, a fellowship that takes the time to work its problems through, all of this is what the church is meant to do. We re believers together, a priesthood set apart with Jesus as the head and our devotion as the heart of the church. It s the strength of Christian love that creates a mighty bond, that it s clear to see transcends the world and goes beyond. It s the kind of love that people know is very, very rare. All of this is what the church is meant to share. The anthem is a contemporary setting of the best known poem of WWI, written in 1915 by Canadian physician Lieutenant- Colonel John McCrae. GOSPEL READING JOHN 17:20-26 PEW BIBLE, NT, P. 105 SERMON REV. CAROLINE KELLY RESPONDING TO THE WORD * HYMN #300 WE ARE ONE IN THE SPIRIT THEY LL KNOW WE ARE CHRISTIANS SHARING OF JOYS AND CONCERNS PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE, CONCLUDING WITH THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. INVITATION TO OFFERING MUSICAL OFFERING GIVE THANKS WITH A GRATEFUL HEART BRENDA LUGER, FLUTE * AT THE PRESENTATION #652 A GRATEFUL HEART ROCKINGHAM A grateful heart is what I bring, a song of praise, my offering. Among the saints I lift my voice: in you, O God, I will rejoice. * PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND DEDICATION LITANY OF THANKS For the grace upon grace which is this community of faith sanctuary and sermon, music and mission, practices of hospitality, of learning, of discernment. For grace we each bring to add to others graces our personal hopes and skills, the time we can share, the experiences from which we offer tenderness, our willingness to take responsibility or expose vulnerability. Many of us give our monetary offering weekly. Many of us give our offering monthly or even yearly. This morning, even if you are not putting your monetary offering in the plate today, please touch the inside of the plate when it goes by. This will help us remember that the gift we are offering is actually ourselves.

For unexpected grace that sustains us in hard times diagnosis, discouragement, downturn or despair. For grace in the spaces all those possibilities of next year the new people who will sit in these pews, the new ways we will reach out, the transitions completed and the transitions begun. For the grace of prayer, the grace of scripture, the grace of forgiveness, the grace of the resurrection promise, the grace of a single cup of cold water for a child, a stranger or a friend. All these we have and do and will receive through Jesus Christ, who opens our hearts and hands so that grace may flow through us to all the world. For so many blessings we give you thanks and praise. Amen. ACT OF CONSECRATION (As you bring forward your pledge cards and notes of gratitude, you are invited to sing) Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me; Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me. Melt me, mold me, Fill me, use me. Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me. LIVING GOD During the Act of Consecration, you are invited to come forward individually or as a family and place in the basket your pledge card and the slip of paper on which you have noted something for which you are thankful. BEARING AND FOLLOWING THE WORD INTO THE WORLD * HYMN #716 GOD, WHOSE GIVING KNOWS NO ENDING BEACH SPRING * CLOSING RESPONSES In gratitude, in deep gratitude for this moment, this place, these people, We give ourselves to you. Take us out to live as changed people, Because we have been touched by the living Lord and cannot remain the same. Ask much from us, expect much from us, Enable much by us, encourage many through us. So, Lord, may we live to your glory, both as inhabitants of earth and citizens of the commonwealth of heaven. Amen. * SUNG BENEDICTION ##306 BLEST BE THE TIE THAT BINDS DENNIS (Please join hands as we sing together.) Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love. This Morning s Worship Leaders Preacher......Rev. Caroline Kelly Liturgist.....Ann Kellermeyer Director of Music Ministries...Bryan Lohr Musicians...The Sanctuary Choir and Brenda Luger, Flute Sound Technician......Joe Aurigemma Ushers...Charlene Lelinski and Judy Stern GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME VISITORS: We are glad you found your way to First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland. For more information about opportunities to worship, learn and serve with us, we encourage you to visit the table outside the church office. You can also learn more about us at www.fpc-cumberland.org and www.facebook.com/first.pres.cumberland. Childcare is provided in the nursery. An usher will be glad to direct you there. CHILDREN IN WORSHIP: While we do provide a nursery for young children, we also welcome you to bring your child with you to worship. We have "worship bags" in the back of the sanctuary that include materials for drawing and coloring, as well as Bible stories and Bible word-find games. After the Time for Young Disciples, children may go to the nursery for a Bible lesson or remain in the sanctuary. Our "Young Children in Worship" pew card contains information about why young children should be encouraged to come to worship and how parents and others can engage them more fully in worship. THE PRAY-GROUND is a special space in the sanctuary for our youngest children and their families. All families are welcome to come and sit in the right front pews with their children seated on the rug. This front row seat will allow God s youngest children to participate in the service in a place where they can see and hear best. There will be activities provided so that their little hands are kept busy while participating in worship. Jesus said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it (Mark 10:14-15). FRIENDSHIP PADS: Please locate and sign the red pad in your pew, tear off the sheet and place it in the collection plate during the offering. This important practice allows us to be mindful of new folks and long-time members as well, and is a good way to learn (or remember) the names of those with whom you are seated. If you are visitor, please fill out the Welcome to First Presbyterian Church card in the pew rack and put it in the offering plate when it comes by during the service. PERSONAL LISTENING DEVICES: (amplifiers) are available in the back of the church for use during worship. Please see an usher for assistance. WORSHIP BROADCASTS ON YOUTUBE: To view worship services live or to view taped worship services, go to www.youtube.com (First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland Live Stream) or go to our website http://www.fpccumberland.org/ and click on click here to view our worship service located at the bottom of the home page. SANCTUARY FLOWERS: The flowers in the sanctuary this morning are given to the Glory of God in honor of their beautiful children, Melissa, Eddie, Hayden, and their perfect grandchildren, Gabriel, Dominic, and Christian, by Larry Ulm and Marlee Ort. There are flower openings for December 9 and 16! Please contact Michael Levitas or the church office if you would like to sponsor flowers for a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary or in memory or honor of someone. You may specify live or silk flowers. Silk flower money will be directed to the Special Ministries Fund.
