June 2016 A Not e from our Pa st or, Re v. Bi ll Russe l l If you build it, they will come. If you cut the grass, have beautiful flowers, and make it look great, they will come. If you paint the doors red and get some signs, they will come. If you cook and eat a lot of good food, they will come. Don't we wish it were that simple, because we do all those things, and we do them well. Sometimes I wonder, though, if maybe we have gotten away from the best method ever for church growth, and that is the simple, sincere, personal invitation to be a part of worship at Central. John's gospel tells us that Peter met Jesus because Andrew invited Peter to go with him. How long has it been since you invited someone to join you for worship? I challenge each of you, will you join with me in making the summer of 2016 The Summer of the Invitation? We have a very special church and fellowship; we must share it. We cannot be hoarders! And, Summer means learning new songs. June's Hymn of the Month is # 392, Draw Us in the Spirit's Tether. This is a very good communion hymn and easy to sing. I promise you will like it. Bill Our Chapel Garden. A place to reflect, pray or just to relax.

Offertory Meditation Kathy Young shared the following Offertory thought on Trinity Sunday. Many churches today are celebrating what we sometimes call Trinity Sunday. It's always the Sunday following Pentecost. The doctrine of the Trinity was something that was developed by the church quite a few years after Pentecost. It's not mentioned in the New Testament at all. One of our denomination's founding fathers, Barton W. Stone, didn't believe in the doctrine of the Trinity. That is to say, he didn't believe that the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, were three parts of the same One. Alexander Campbell believed it was a logical hypothesis, but it is hard for me to tell from his writings whether he actually accepted it as a doctrine. He was very verbose. I've always had the sense that in our denomination, the sacraments are more important than the doctrines. How you treat your fellow human beings is more important than any doctrine. And that's as it should be. Perhaps that's why the service of the offering is given a place of importance in our worship. Aside from the fact that we have to pay the bills, the offering gives us an opportunity to go beyond paying the bills. It serves as a reminder that there are people in this world who sometimes need our help. The words of kindness, the gifts of necessities, the provision of food, all of these things are actions that reflect the teachings of Jesus. Birthday Party Central is having a Chip & Dip birthday party for John Rainey after Worship on Sunday, June 5 and you are invited to attend and bring an item for Central s Snack Bag Homeless Ministry in honor of John. We will have birthday cake and ice cream plus a variety of chips & dips for all to enjoy. John supports the Homeless Snack Bag Ministry and we want to help him stock up on items needed for the homeless. You may want to donate a small sum or bring some of the following items. Thank you! Bottled Water Fruit Juice Chips Cookies Ramen Noodles Trail Mix Pudding Memorials and Honorariums During May we received a donation of $100 in honor of Sarah Jane Smith and a gift in memory of James Robinson, the twin brother of Mary Artman. Editors Note If you want to receive the Banner by E-Mail please contact the Editor, John Bennett, by phone on (901) 276 2708 or by e-mail at: centralchristian@cccmemphistn.org All contributions for the June Banner should be emailed or sent to the Editor at the Church Office by June 30th. Past copies of the Banner together with sermons, special music videos etc. can be found using links to YouTube on our Website at cccmemphistn.org.

Food Drive. The Outreach Committee is beginning its second food drive for the Grace St. Lukes food pantry during the month of June. Last year at this time the committee focused on gathering one food item: peanut butter! The drive was a huge success and was greatly appreciated by Grace St. Luke. So, the next time you go grocery shopping, please pick up a jar of peanut butter any size, any brand, and as many jars as you can. Let s see if we can gather at least 50 jars this year. Pictured is Mark Rutledge purchasing food for an earlier Food DWM Each month the DWM hosts a luncheon, usually after our Church service on the second Sunday. After the meal they have a guest speaker and business meeting. The June 12 DWM meeting will feature our own Bridgett Sharp and she will tell our group about her position as researcher at St. Jude Research Hospital. We will have a salad pot luck and encourage everyone to attend to hear Bridgett s interesting talk. Come learn more about her and St. Jude research! Bridgett is a research technologist in the Infectious Diseases department. There, she focuses primarily on influenza and astrovirus research in hopes of giving immunocompromised children a fighting chance against these viruses.

Summer Sale Preparations to begin soon! We will begin preparing shortly for our Summer Sale to be held on July 9 so please get ready for the work and bring in any items you want to donate to the sale. If you know of folks who can assist with the work, please ask them to help us and give them a work schedule. The following is a schedule of the proposed working party times. And we mean party! Food will be provided and let s have a great time setting items and setting up the sale tables etc. Date Day Time June 15 Wednesday (set up) 6:30 to 8:30 June 18 Saturday 9:00 to 2:00 June 19 Sunday 12:30 to 4:30 June 22 Wednesday 6:30 to 8:30 June 25 Saturday 9:00 to 2:00 June 26 Sunday 12:30 to 4:30 June 29 Wednesday 6:30 to 8:30 July 2 Saturday 9:00 to 2:00 July 3 Sunday 12:30 to 4:30 July 4 Monday if needed (Holiday) 9:00 to 12:00 July 6 Wednesday 6:30 to 8:30 July 8 Friday 9:00 to 5:00 July 9 Saturday (SALE DAY) 7:00 to 2:00 July 16 Saturday (1/2 Price) 7:00 to 12:00 July 17 Sunday (Clean up) 12:30 to 4:30 Pentecost Linda Johnson ran the Concession Stand at a previous year s Summer Sale. Drive-Thru Prayer Mission On a warm morning on May 26th six of our congregation arrived at the Church just before 7:00am to take part in the second of our Our Drive thru Prayer Missions. People s prayer concerns were shared and, while no quick solutions can be offered, it was evident, to those of us who took part, that the ability to share their worries was a great comfort. Carol Scarberry in a recent Offertory Thought said the following: I arrived at the Church on a clear perfect sunny day. As I stood on the Church grounds looking up at our beautiful building an staring at the blue cross, I prayed and I thanked God for Richard Brown for having the faith and courage to start yet another mission that will change other s lives as well as our own. Our next Drive Thru Prayer Mission is planned for June 30th. Memphis Camerata On May 27th the Memphis Camerata gave a concert in our Church. The music was a selection of both sacred and secular pieces by Z Randall Stroope, Randal Thompson and others, and was all sung a cappella. After the performance they hosted a reception with wine and cupcakes, About 70 people attended this lovely evening which was enhanced by the acoustics of our sanctuary.

Men s Cook Out To round of our season of Wednesday Night dinners we were treated to a Cook-out by the Men of the Church. Burgers and various side dishes were the order of the day and after the meal Bill Russel entertained us with a quiz based on advertising slogans. How many Church goers does it take to make Deviled Eggs? Looking at the pictures the answer must be four, three Protestants to make the eggs and one Catholic to supervise! Ministers Conference In May Central hosted the monthly West Tennessee Disciples Ministers Conference. The business part of the meeting was held in the Church with the keynote speaker Cozette Garrett giving a presentation about ministers caring for other ministers. Afterward the participants were provided with a lunch prepared by Ron Buck with desserts prepared by our own DWM. On the right is a picture of our minister Rev. Bill Russell enjoying the meal with some of the other attendees.

Improvements to the Fellowship Hall Our congregation and our regular readers will know of the disaster that struck our Fellowship Hall a few months ago when, due to a plumbing leak, water, under mains pressure, poured into the hall overnight destroying the ceiling tiles. It was only thanks to Mark Rutledge and John Rainey who spend hours clearing up the water and drying out the room that the damage was not much worse. Well they say when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Because of the prompt settlement from our insurers, State Auto, and generous donations from members of the congregation we have been able to contract not only for the replacement of the ceiling tiles, but also for the removal of outdated and redundant partition tracking and the updating of the lighting in the hall. Hopefully by the next edition of the Banner the work will be finished. The picture on the right is of just a small section of the damage while the picture below shows the state of the hall as we go to print. Some of the new lighting has, as you can see, been installed. The old tiles were removed and other preparation work carried out by members of the congregation, so as to reduce costs and our thanks go to all who have worked so hard and to those who have contributed in other ways, to make this makeover possible.
