THE HOUSE OF HOPE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Love, then is a form of work or a form of courage. Specifically, it is a work or courage directed toward the nurture of our own or another s spiritual growth. We may work or exert courage in directions other than toward spiritual growth, and for this reason all work and all courage is not love. But since it requires the extension of ourselves, love is always either work or courage. If an act is not one of work or courage, then it is not an act of love. There are no exceptions. -M. Scott Peck, The Road Less Traveled Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 2, 2018 10 a.m.

Prelude Sortie in E Minor Aaron David Miller, Organist THE APPROACH TO GOD César Franck Call to Worship (Congregation reads the text in bold) Rev. Dr. Andrew L. McDonald O come, let us sing to the Lord and shout with joy to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into God s presence with Thanksgiving, singing joyful songs of praise. * Opening Hymn 464 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Hymn to Joy Call to Confession (congregation seated) The Lord is with you. And also with you. Holy God, Maker of all Have mercy on us. Jesus Christ, Servant of the poor Have mercy on us. Holy Spirit, Breath of Life Have mercy on us. Let us confess our sin. Prayer of Confession (unison) Hear our prayers, O Lord. We confess the inadequacy of our devotion and the weakness of our service. For we have honored you with our lips even when our hearts have been far from you. We invoke your name for our own glory more than yours. We obey you only when it suits us. We do not struggle against the things that tempt us. Our outward appearance masks our inward reality. But you, Holy God have the power to forgive us. Cleanse us in your living water, that we may truly serve you with all the strength of our being and bring glory to your name. (The prayer will continue with our silent confessions.) 3
Kyrie Assurance of Forgiveness (Congregation reads the text in bold) I confess to God in the company of all God s people that my life and the life of the world are broken by my sin. May God forgive you, Christ renew you, and the Spirit enable you to grow in love. Amen. Affirmation of Faith from the Confession of Belhar (unison) We believe that Christ s work of reconciliation is made manifest in the church as the community of believers who have been reconciled with God and with one another; that unity is, therefore, both a gift and an obligation for the church of Jesus Christ; that through the working of God s Spirit it is a binding force, yet simultaneously a reality which must be earnestly pursued and sought: one which the people of God must continually be built up to attain; that this unity must become visible so that the world may believe that separation, enmity and hatred between people and groups is sin which Christ has already conquered, and accordingly that anything which threatens this unity may have no place in the church and must be resisted. Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Offering (Online giving is available. See back cover.) Offertory Solo We Walk By Faith Samuel McFarland 6
