From the Desk of Father Derivan: CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX OCTOBER 12, 2014 TWENTY EIGHT SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME St. Paul gives us a beautiful reminder in the reading of today s Mass, I can do all things in Him who strengthens me. What St. Paul is saying is that we are not on our own or, at least, we must not try to be. We realize that when we try to do things on our own, we slip and fall. I think everyone has had that experience. We may have the best of intentions of doing something at home, at work, with our family, with our friends but if we do things on our own, it just does not work out. The same is true of our Christian lives. We need strength to go on. We need someone to help us, particularly when faith is hard. Then we realize that we do have that someone who strengthens us, Jesus Himself. That puts a whole new focus on our life of faith, on following the commandments, in living good Christian lives. We are not on our own. I can do all things in Him who strengthens me. The symbol of Jesus love for us and the strength He offers us is His Sacred Heart. This week on Thursday we celebrate the feast day of a saint who is certainly the apostle of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We should all know about her. Over three hundred years ago a young religious sister in the Order of the Visitation in France was given an extraordinary gift. She received the appearance of Our Lord Himself. As she said, she felt invested with His presence. For thirteen months, He appeared to her and revealed to her His Sacred Heart. He gave her a mission, the mission or spreading devotion to His Sacred Heart, the mission of making up for the coldness and ingratitude of the world. The sister s name was Sister Margaret Mary Alocoque, now St. Margaret Mary, the great apostle of devotion to the Heart of Jesus. Our Lord asked this little sister to rekindle love for His Sacred Heart throughout the world and to promote the observance of the First Fridays of each month. And so she did. Devotion to the Sacred Heart spread like wildfire throughout the world. It remains today one of the most popular devotions of the Church. St. Margaret Mary lived only to the age of 43. In many ways she was like our own St. Theresa. She never left her convent, but again like St. Theresa, she touched the hearts of millions of Catholics or, more importantly, she invited people to let their hearts be touched by the Sacred Heart of Jesus. St. Margaret Mary invited the world to find strength in the Heart of Jesus, not to try to do life on their own, but rather to live life realizing that the Sacred Heart of Jesus is open in love for each of us. And knowing we are loved, then we can have strength to face everything in our lives, good and not so good. We can do all things in Jesus who strengthens us with the love of His Sacred Heart. I encourage you to have devotion to the Sacred Heart in your life. I am sure that many of you do. If that is so, of course continue in that devotion. If not, consider carrying the Sacred Heart badge, having a picture of the Sacred Heart enthroned in your home, or saying the Novena to the Sacred Heart. In this bulletin you will find an Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart for your personal use. The Heart of Jesus will give you strength. We have His word for that. One final thought: devotion to the Sacred Heart helps us to make up for the sins of the world. Our Lord said to St. Margaret Mary, Behold this Heart which has so loved people that it has spared nothing in order to testify to my love. But in return I receive from the greater part of humanity only ingratitude, coldness and dishonor. I come into your heart so that through your devotion you may atone for the offenses I have received. Just as the Sacred Heart gives us strength in our own Christian lives, it gives us strength to face the sins of our day, war, terrorism, inhumanity, and everything else that we read about every day. We must all try to make reparation for these sins and the strength to do also comes from the Heart of Jesus Himself. He will help us to make up for the sins of the world. He will strengthen us in our determination to do so. CANDLELIGHT PRAYING OF THE ROSARY WITH BENEDICTION Father Thomas B. Derivan This Wednesday evening, October 15th at 7:30PM we will have a candlelight recitation of the Rosary, presented by our Altar Society and our children. This ceremony honors Our Blessed Mother Mary during this Month of the Rosary. It will conclude with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Parents and children are encouraged to join us for this spiritual & prayerful occasion CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM-5:00PM or by appointment in the Rectory. Special thanks to all who worked so hard to make our annual Dinner Dance at the Villa Barone Manor on October 4th such a great success. It was truly a beautiful and memorable occasion and a fitting tribute to our honorees: Lillian Rodriguez, Fr. Pat Angelucci, JoAnn Napolitano, Eddie Romeo, Frank Ramunno of Lasting Impressions, Michael Agovino and the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill who staffed our school from the beginning. This celebration was a fitting observance of our school s 60th anniversary. Special thanks to our school Principal Mrs. Josephine Fanelli and the teachers, our rectory staff, our Dinner Chairperson Debbie Zottola-Addario and her committee and to the over two hundred parishioners and friends of St. Theresa s who attended. We were particularly delighted to have Fr. Grippo attend this beautiful celebration. Thank to all!

All who experience sickness or old age are invited to receive this beautiful sacrament. In past years this sacrament was received only in danger of death. Now the Church extends this sacrament to anyone who seeks Christ s healing grace because of any sickness, physical or otherwise, or old age. We invite you to come for the celebration of this beautiful sacrament on October 18 at noon.. Please bring this to the attention of relatives and friends who may wish to receive God s healing grace in the anointing. We will begin weekly Eucharistic Adoration on Thursday, October 23rd. On each Thursday there will be a 12:00 noon Mass after which the Blessed Sacrament will be placed on the altar for adoration. During the adoration time we will recite the Evening Prayer (Vespers) of the Church and Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The ceremony which will last one hour will conclude with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 1:00PM. We hope that this will be a convenient time for adoration of Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist particularly for older parishioners and for those who work in our neighborhood. Please bring this to the attention of neighbors and friends. In addition to the weekly Thursday adoration, we will have our monthly Eucharistic adoration on the First Friday of the month beginning at 7:30PM and extending until 9:00PM. Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus By Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque To the Sacred Heart of our Lord, Jesus Christ, I give myself and I consecrate my person and my life, my actions, pains, and sufferings so that I may be unwilling to make use of any part of my being other than to honor, love, and glorify the Sacred Heart. This is my unchanging purpose, namely, to be all his and to do all things for the love of Him, at the same time renouncing with all my heart whatever is displeasing to Him. I therefore take you, O Sacred Heart, to be the only object of my love, the guardian of my life, my assurance of salvation, the remedy of my weakness and inconstancy, the atonement for all the faults of my life, and my sure refuge at the our of death. Be then, O Heart of goodness, my justification before God the Father, and turn away from me the strokes of his righteous anger. O Heart of love, I put all my confidence in you; for I fear everything from my own wickedness and frailty, but I hope for all things from your goodness and bounty. Remove from me all that can displease you or resist your holy will; let your pure love imprint your image so deeply upon my heart that I shall never be able to forget you or to be separated from you. May I obtain, from your loving kindness, the grace of having my name written in your heart; for in you, I desire to place all my happiness and glory, living and dying, in bondage to you. Concluding Prayer Father, we honor the heart of your Son, broken by our cruelty, yet symbol of love s triumph, pledge of all that we are called to be. Teach us to see Christ in the lives we touch and to offer Him living worship by love-filled service to our brothers and sisters. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. MIDNIGHT RUN RETURNS Once again we will be starting our Midnight Run. We would like to start collecting sweatshirts, sweatpants, jeans, hats, scarves, gloves and jackets only. New clothing would be appreciated or Like New items. Please bring your donation to the back of the Church to be collected.
