THE UPDATE We re headed to Haiti again! (And, you can help.) Last year s January/February missions teams worked hard for two weeks to build the first-floor walls for a new school at the Kids Alive Children s Village in Cap Haïtien, Haiti. If all goes well prior to our team s arrival later this month, we will be working on constructing the block walls of the second floor during our time there, January 28-February 4. When completed, the new school will allow Kids Alive to add additional grade levels and serve many more students in the surrounding neighborhood of Balan, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Cap Haïtien. The completed school building will have ten classrooms, a new kitchen, and new bathrooms. The January 2017 team includes 15 people: Susan Anderson, Angie Bird, Taylor Bird, Richard Erickson, Doug Heacock, Kenna LaRue, Taylor Manning, Judy Rahn, Kim Riffel, Rick Riffel, Randy Roy, Amber Temple, Stephanie Temple, Larry Wedman, and Tasha Wertin. You can help with this trip in two important ways: (1) you can pray for the team members, and (2) you can donate much-needed items for our team members to take to Haiti. Prayer cards will be available for each team member in the church lobby in the weeks ahead, and you can sign up to pray daily for one or more team members. Your prayers really do make a difference--you can pray for the health and safety of the team, for the success of their work, and for the children continued on pg. 2 1

and staff whom they will be serving while they are there. And if you follow the team s progress on the missions trip blog (lfmchurch.org/missions-trip-blog), you will hear what God is doing day by day, and learn of any other specific prayer needs. Prior to the team s departure, you can donate any of the following items for the team to take for the children s village: towels, twin-size sheets, underwear (size 6 through adult), boys socks (black or dark grey), girls socks (white), soccer socks for boys, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and hand sanitizer. Items can be new or gently-used. Each team member will carry an additional suitcase full of donated items. There will be tubs in the lobby for collection of donated items. Please plan to bring donated items to the church by Sunday, Jan. 22. Mèsi anpil! (Thanks very much!) Doug Heacock, on behalf of the team Discipleship Ministries Primetimers Tuesday, Jan. 10, at noon in Rm. 24/25 Twenty-three hungry Primetimers enjoyed a combined Thanksgiving and Christmas luncheon with turkey and all the trimmings on December 13. The food was great, and the fellowship even better. After lunch, we enjoyed listening to Christmas carols played on the piano by Barbara Walden. While listening, we also put messages and Christmas stickers on Christmas cards that Judy Rahn provided. Judy delivered the cards to Brandon Woods, Pioneer Ridge, Presbyterian Manor, Drury Place, and The Windsor for staff to distribute to the residents. Some of us did sing the carols while working on the cards. Thanks to Judy for putting this together. We plan to meet again for a potluck luncheon at noon on January 10. You are asked to bring a covered dish of your choice. First-time attendees will be our guest and do not need to bring anything. The program this month is Downsizing/Getting Rid of Stuff, presented by Marguerite Carlson from OrganizeU. You won t want to miss this interesting program. Hope to see you there! Since we live in Kansas, January weather can be very unpredictable. If it becomes necessary to cancel the luncheon, an email will be sent to you. If you haven t received an email and you are concerned as to rather or not the event will be held, please call Ernie Dyer at (785) 393-3846. If you have any questions, you can contact Ernie at (785) 393-3846 or epdyer@att.net. Women s Gathering Saturday, Feb. 4, in the FLC (gym) Mark your calendar! The next Women s Gathering is coming up on Saturday, Feb. 4, here in the FLC (gym). Watch your bulletin and your email for more information this month. 2 Discipleship Ministries

Men s Fraternity: A Man and His Traps Thursdays, Jan. 26-Mar. 2, 6:00-7:15 a.m., in Rm. 24/25 Men being involved in a community of men is key to our spiritual development, making it over the long haul as husbands and fathers, and living a life that has impact! Every man needs other men encouraging him on his journey to authentic manhood. Having other men around you helps you gain a better perspective on your life. Others can help you discover your blindspots and avoid costly mistakes. We all need men in our lives who will be honest with us to help us become better men. And, sharing life with a community of men makes the great times feel like a celebration and provides much-needed support when life gets rough. If you want to be encouraged and better equipped to grow spiritually, Men s Fraternity is a great on-ramp! The theme for Men s Fraternity this new year is A Man and His Traps. There is a great need for men to rise up and be the men God calls them to be. A Man and His Traps is based on Authentic Manhood: 33 - The Series. A Man and His Traps will equip you to handle some of the major dangers we will face as men. We will learn how to leave a legacy of eternal significance, integrity, and a great name! Starting Jan. 26, we will meet weekly on Thursday mornings at the church in Rm. 24/25, beginning at 6:00 a.m. and finishing promptly at 7:15 a.m. Guys, this is a great deal and will be well-worth your time and investment! The cost is $25 for the six weeks of sessions. The cost includes the training manual, videos we will view and process together, juice, coffee, and coffee cake. If you already have a training manual, the cost is $10. Men s Fraternity is open to all men. Please feel welcome to come and check it out! And, think beyond yourself this is a great venue to invite a friend along! For more information, contact Pastor Larry at lbaldridge@lfmchurch.org or go to authenticmanhood.com. The Armor of God Women s Bible Study Thursday mornings, Feb. 2-May 4, 9:30-11:30 am in Rm. 24/25 All day, every day, an invisible war rages around you unseen, unheard, yet felt throughout every aspect of your life. A devoted, devilish enemy seeks to wreak havoc on everything that matters to you: your heart, your mind, your marriage, your children, your relationships, your resilience, your dreams, your destiny. But his battle plan depends on catching you unaware and unarmed. If you're tired of being pushed around and caught with your guard down, this study is for you. The enemy always fails miserably when he meets a woman dressed for the occasion. The armor of God, more than merely a biblical description of the believer's inventory, is an action plan for putting it on and developing a personalized strategy to secure victory. Join us for The Armor of God, a video-driven women s study by Priscilla Shirer. The study workbook costs $13. Watch for information in your bulletin and sign-ups in the lobby this month. If you ve never done a Priscilla Shirer Bible study, you can go to lifeway.com and check out The Armor of God video clips. A sign-up table will be in the lobby this month. Discipleship Ministries 3

Know Christ Deeply Women s Bible Study Wednesdays, Jan. 25-Mar. 8, 6:15-7:45 p.m. in Rm. 22 Knowing God is more than discovering facts about God; it is a relationship. Most people find their identity in accomplishments, titles or positions, trying to prove themselves by what they ve achieved. But what if our identity - our greatest claim to fame - was not based on what we have done or will do, but on Whom we know? The apostle Paul wrote, Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I may have Christ. As a result, I can really know Christ. Philippians 3:8-10 Know Christ Deeply is open to all women. The cost of the book is $5. Questions? See Beth or Ashley at the sign-up table in the lobby this month. Searching the Scriptures Women s Bible Study focusing on The Prayers of Jesus Thursday mornings, Jan. 26-Apr. 6, 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Rm. 22 From the principles and practice of Jesus prayer life, we can learn much about the power and privilege of prayer. Our study will be divided into two parts: Part 1: Biblical Principles of Prayer: effective prayer as taught by Jesus and laid out in Scripture Part II: Jesus Practice of Prayer: the necessity of prayer when surrounded by circumstances and temptations that He faced and we now face The class fee is $5. For more information, please contact Susan at (785) 843-7660 or Dana at (785) 331-2795. A sign-up table will be in the lobby this month. Student Ministries FMYC June 26-30 in Fort Collins, CO FMYC is an international youth conference that the Free Methodist Church puts on every three years. Students experience dynamic teaching, corporate worship, service, and team-building activities throughout the week. FMYC has a history of being a pivotal moment in the faith of many students' lives. There will be a informational meeting held in the Teen Center on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 6:00 p.m. The meeting is open to parents of students going into 8th grade through graduating seniors. 4 Discipleship Ministries / Student Ministries
